This project truly felt like a significant step forward in my building journey – a moment where I truly donned my “big girl pants” and pushed my creative boundaries. While I often brainstorm ideas and then lean on the incredible talent of my friend, the legendary Ana White, to craft the perfect plans, this particular console table marks a proud first for me. It’s the very first piece of furniture I’ve designed from the ground up, entirely without pre-existing plans. But don’t you worry, my friends! We’re still making sure you have all the resources you need to recreate this beauty in your own home. After I completed my design, I sent all my detailed specifications to Ana, and she meticulously drew up the plans for you. Talk about perfect teamwork! This elegant yet functional open-shelf console table has been a long-held dream for my kitchen. I envisioned a piece that would not only offer practical storage but also add a touch of much-needed vertical interest and character to that area. I truly believe this new console table perfectly achieves that vision! Take a look at how it beautifully transformed our space:

Let’s Build Something Beautiful: Designing Your Dream Console Table
Alright, with that important message shared, let’s roll up our sleeves and get to the fun part – building some adorable, functional, and stylish stuff for your home! This specific open-shelf console table design initially calls for 1×12-inch boards. However, in my quest for both superior aesthetics and performance, I made a conscious choice to deviate from standard pine or white wood. Instead, I opted to use PureBond Plywood, and I can’t recommend it enough. For those curious about the many benefits of this fantastic material, you can see exactly why we are such advocates for PureBond Plywood in this informative video. I simply visited my local Home Depot, where the incredibly helpful staff cut the large PureBond sheet down into four precise 11.5-inch wide boards for me. This approach not only proved to be more cost-effective than purchasing individual pine boards, but it also promises to deliver a significantly more beautiful and durable finish to your console table in the long run. For my project, I specifically used 3/4-inch thick Oak PureBond, which provided a gorgeous grain and exceptional structural integrity.
PureBond plywood stands out for several compelling reasons, making it an ideal choice for any DIY furniture project, especially one that will reside in a central location like your kitchen. Firstly, it’s proudly manufactured in North America with soy-based, formaldehyde-free adhesives, which means it’s a healthier choice for your home and the environment. This is a significant advantage over many traditional plywood products. Beyond its eco-credentials, PureBond offers unparalleled strength, stability, and a beautifully consistent veneer, which is crucial when you’re aiming for a professional-looking finish. Its smooth surface also takes stain exceptionally well, allowing the natural beauty of the wood grain to shine through. By opting for PureBond, you’re not just building furniture; you’re crafting a piece of lasting quality that enhances your home.
The Revolutionary Kreg Jig: Your Secret Weapon for Professional Joints
When it came to assembling this entire console table, there was one indispensable tool that made all the difference, transforming potentially complex joinery into a simple, sturdy, and seamless process: my beloved Kreg Jig. Of course! For anyone serious about DIY furniture building, this tool is an absolute game-changer.
Instead of relying on unsightly visible wood screws or complicated traditional joinery techniques, the Kreg Jig allows you to create incredibly strong and discreet pocket holes, much like the one you see here. This ingenious system involves drilling an angled hole into one piece of wood, which then connects to another piece using a specialized self-tapping screw. The result is a rock-solid joint with fasteners hidden from view, contributing to a much cleaner, more professional aesthetic.
Once all your necessary pocket holes are precisely drilled, you simply use Kreg’s specially designed pocket hole screws to securely attach all your components together. I know, for newcomers, it might seem a bit daunting at first. Questions like, “Where exactly do I place these pocket holes?” or “How is adding an extra step actually making this process simpler?” are completely natural. But trust me, after you’ve used the Kreg Jig just a few times, you will absolutely never want to go back to traditional methods. This innovative system truly elevates your woodworking projects, making them not only incredibly sturdy and durable but also giving them that coveted professional, factory-built appearance. It streamlines the attachment process, making assembly significantly easier and faster. It’s truly a win-win situation for any DIY furniture builder, from beginner to experienced.
For this specific console table, I strategically placed my pocket holes in these key locations to ensure maximum strength and stability for the entire structure:
Adding Character with Pine Trim and Custom Doors
While the main body of the console table benefited immensely from the stability and smooth finish of PureBond plywood, I opted for pine boards for the front face of the table and the door trim. Pine offers a beautiful, rustic texture and is easy to work with, making it perfect for adding decorative accents. A crucial tip for working with pine or any dimensional lumber: always take the time to carefully select the straightest boards available at the hardware store. This simple step will save you a tremendous amount of frustration and ensure a much cleaner, more professional final product. Trust me, a little extra time spent at the lumber aisle goes a long way! 🙂
One of the most satisfying aspects of using the Kreg Jig is how it simplifies the process of building custom cabinet doors, making it incredibly accessible for DIYers. You can effortlessly construct a sturdy door frame, just like the one pictured here, using pocket hole joinery. This method ensures tight, square corners and a durable frame that will stand the test of time. The precision and ease that the Kreg Jig offers are truly invaluable when crafting doors that need to fit perfectly and operate smoothly.
After constructing your robust frame, the next step is wonderfully straightforward: simply attach a piece of 1/4-inch PureBond plywood to the back of it. This thinner plywood panel serves as the door’s inset, providing a lightweight yet strong surface. You can secure it using a combination of wood glue for a strong bond and staples or brad nails for immediate holding power while the glue dries. This method is incredibly simple, efficient, and results in a beautiful, professional-looking cabinet door that complements the overall rustic charm of the console table.
Achieving the Perfect Finish: Staining and Distressing
When it came to the finish for this console table, I knew exactly the look I wanted. I had recently achieved a stunning finish on my new coffee table and decided to replicate that success here, simply opting for a different color to suit the kitchen’s aesthetic. For this project, I chose Rust-Oleum Ultimate Wood Stain in the rich, deep hue of Dark Walnut. This particular stain provides excellent coverage and a beautiful, classic wood tone that really brings out the grain of the PureBond plywood and pine trim.
Once the stain was completely dry – and it’s crucial to allow adequate drying time for optimal results – I moved on to the distressing process. This is where one of my absolute favorite power tools truly shines! I used my Ryobi 18V One+ Corner Cat Finish Sander to achieve that perfectly worn, “shanty” chic look. This part of the process is incredibly easy and, dare I say, almost therapeutic with the Corner Cat. Its unique triangular pad allows you to easily get into corners and tight spaces, making distressing precise and effortless. If you don’t already have one, I highly recommend adding this versatile tool to your workshop wish list! It shares the same powerful 18V Lithium-Ion battery that our drill uses, which is incredibly convenient, and it weighs very little, making it comfortable to use for extended periods. I now rely on this little workhorse for every wood project I undertake – I absolutely love it for creating that perfectly aged, authentic look that defines our style.
Hardware and Thoughtful Styling
No furniture piece is truly complete without the right hardware to complement its style and functionality. For the doors on my kitchen console table, I used these fantastic hinges I discovered at Home Depot. To tie them into the overall aesthetic of the distressed dark wood, I gave them a quick coat of Rust-Oleum black spray paint. This simple trick instantly transformed them, making them fit the rustic-chic look of the piece perfectly. For the drawer pulls, I found some charming options at Hobby Lobby for an incredibly budget-friendly price of just $1.50 apiece. Don’t underestimate the power of hardware to elevate your DIY projects; it’s the jewelry of your furniture!
To maximize the open-shelf storage and add a touch of charming organization, I sourced these wonderful baskets from Home Goods. They fit perfectly into the cubbies of the console table, providing a neat and stylish way to store various kitchen essentials. To add my own personalized “shanty” touch and keep things organized, I created and attached my own chalkboard tags to each basket. These tags are fantastic for labeling contents – whether it’s snacks, kitchen linens, or craft supplies – making it easy to find exactly what you need while adding to the farmhouse aesthetic. This combination of practical storage and personalized details truly brings the whole piece to life, making it not just furniture but a functional work of art in your kitchen.
