Last year, we embarked on an exciting journey to transform this crucial space, and the results have truly exceeded our expectations. Every design decision was made with functionality, durability, and timeless style in mind, ensuring it could comfortably accommodate our lively crew.

We are absolutely delighted with how everything came together, creating a space that is both incredibly practical and aesthetically pleasing. We know visuals speak volumes, so we’ve put together a comprehensive video tour to give you an even closer look at all the details. You can watch the full video tour HERE! Below, we’re sharing a detailed list of all the products and DIY elements that helped us achieve this stunning transformation, so you can draw inspiration for your own home projects.

Designing a Kitchen for a Large Family: Our Renovation Journey

Renovating a kitchen for a family of eight presents unique challenges and opportunities. Our previous kitchen, while functional, simply didn’t offer the space, storage, or flow required for our growing family’s needs. We envisioned a bright, open space where multiple people could comfortably cook, eat, and socialize simultaneously without feeling cramped. This meant prioritizing a generous island, ample countertop space, durable finishes, and smart storage solutions. The goal was to create a modern farmhouse aesthetic that felt warm and welcoming, yet capable of standing up to the demands of daily family life.

The Heart of the Home: Layout and Functionality

The layout was paramount. We focused on creating distinct zones for cooking, prep, and dining, all seamlessly integrated. A large central island became the anchor of the kitchen, providing not just extensive prep space but also a casual eating area where our children can gather for breakfast or homework. The open concept ensures that even when the kitchen is busy, everyone feels connected to the rest of the living space, fostering a sense of togetherness that is so important to us.

Key Elements and Design Choices

Every single item in this kitchen was chosen for its blend of style, durability, and functionality. Here’s a closer look at the elements that define our modern farmhouse kitchen:

The Statement Piece: Our Custom Vent Hood

One of the proudest DIY elements of our kitchen is the custom-built vent hood. It brings a bespoke, architectural focal point above the range, enhancing the farmhouse charm. The design was carefully planned to integrate seamlessly with the overall aesthetic, providing both powerful ventilation and a beautiful visual statement. We’re so excited that the DIY plans for this project will be coming soon, allowing you to recreate this custom look in your own home!

Privacy and Style: Premier Bamboo Shades

For our windows, we opted for Premier Bamboo Shades. These natural, textured shades add warmth and a touch of organic elegance to the space, beautifully complementing the farmhouse theme. Beyond their aesthetic appeal, they offer excellent light control and privacy, allowing us to manage the natural light filtering into the kitchen throughout the day while maintaining a cozy atmosphere in the evenings.

Timeless Backsplash: White Subway Tile and Encaustic Cement Tile

The backsplash is a delightful combination of classic and contemporary. We chose White Subway Tile for its enduring appeal and clean lines. Subway tile offers a versatile backdrop that never goes out of style, providing a bright and airy feel. To introduce a unique pattern and an artistic touch, we incorporated Liria Negro Encaustic Cement Tile. These 8×8 inch patterned tiles add depth, character, and a touch of vintage charm, creating a striking visual interest that perfectly complements the simplicity of the subway tile. This thoughtful pairing elevates the kitchen’s design, making it feel both fresh and rooted in tradition.

Rustic Charm: Reclaimed Wood Accents

To bring in authentic farmhouse texture and history, we integrated Reclaimed Wood on our vent hood. This beautiful mixed softwood blend adds a rustic, organic element that introduces warmth and character. The unique imperfections and rich patinas of reclaimed wood tell a story, making the vent hood a truly special and distinctive feature that anchors the kitchen’s farmhouse appeal.

Durable Elegance: Swanbridge Countertops by Cambria

For countertops, durability was non-negotiable for our busy family. We selected Swanbridge Countertops by Cambria. These engineered quartz surfaces are renowned for their strength, stain resistance, and ease of maintenance – essential qualities in a high-traffic kitchen. The Swanbridge design, with its subtle veining and soft, ethereal beauty, mimics the look of natural marble while offering superior performance. It provides a bright and sophisticated foundation that beautifully complements our chosen color palette and withstands daily use from our large family without compromise.

Adding a Touch of Warmth: Brass Hardware

The small details often make the biggest impact. We chose elegant Brass Hardware from Forge Hardware for our cabinetry. The warm, luminous tones of brass instantly elevate the kitchen’s aesthetic, adding a touch of classic sophistication and a subtle hint of vintage charm. Against the cool grey cabinets, the brass hardware provides a beautiful contrast, bringing warmth and a refined finish to the entire space, creating a harmonious blend of modern and traditional elements.

Comfortable Seating: Barstools from Target

Our kitchen island isn’t just for food prep; it’s also a primary gathering spot. To ensure comfort and style, we found these fantastic Barstools from Target. They offer comfortable seating for quick meals, homework sessions, or casual conversations, making the island a truly functional and inviting area for the entire family. Their design perfectly aligns with our modern farmhouse vision, proving that affordable finds can be both stylish and practical.

Practical and Beautiful: Wood Tile Flooring

When it came to flooring, we needed something that could withstand spills, heavy foot traffic, and the general wear and tear of a large family, without sacrificing aesthetics. Our choice was Cottage Grey Faux Wood Floor Tile. These 6×24 inch tiles provide the warm, inviting look of real wood with the incredible durability and low maintenance of porcelain tile. It’s the perfect solution for a kitchen, offering water resistance and easy cleaning while contributing significantly to the modern farmhouse feel with its beautiful wood grain texture and soft grey tones.

Smart Storage: DIY Coffee Cabinet

Organization is key in any busy kitchen. Our DIY Coffee Cabinet is a testament to clever storage solutions. This custom-built piece not only provides dedicated space for all our coffee and tea essentials but also adds another layer of personalized farmhouse charm to the kitchen. It’s a dedicated spot that keeps clutter at bay while adding to the overall aesthetic coherence of the space.

Illuminating Style: Pendant Lights from Amazon

Lighting plays a crucial role in both functionality and ambiance. We selected these stylish Pendant Lights from Amazon. Hung above the island, they provide essential task lighting for food preparation, while also casting a warm, inviting glow that enhances the kitchen’s overall atmosphere. Their design perfectly complements our brass hardware and modern farmhouse theme, tying the entire look together with elegant precision.

Open Shelving and Organization: Metal Brackets and Glass Jars

To add both display and accessible storage, we installed open shelving with sturdy Metal Shelving Brackets. These industrial-style brackets provide strong support while adding a touch of modern edge. On these shelves, we utilize Large Glass Jars with Black Lids for storing staples, creating an organized and visually appealing display. This combination of open shelving and practical jars keeps frequently used items within reach and showcases them as part of the decor.

Charming Details: Pioneer Woman Glassware and Storage Jars

Even our everyday items contribute to the aesthetic! We love our Green Glassware by Pioneer Woman, which adds a pop of color and vintage-inspired charm to our open shelves and dining table. For pantry organization and easy access to snacks and baking ingredients, we also use a variety of Cookie, Snack, and Coffee Jars. These practical yet beautiful jars help keep our kitchen tidy and functional, ensuring everything has its place while enhancing the overall farmhouse appeal.

Elegant Fixtures: Brass Faucet and Farmhouse Sink

The sink area is highly utilized, so we chose fixtures that combine aesthetics with robust performance. Our Brass Faucet is a stunning focal point, continuing the warm metallic theme and offering reliable functionality. Paired with a classic and spacious Farmhouse Sink, this duo is perfect for handling the large dishes and cooking needs of our family. The farmhouse sink’s generous basin makes meal prep and cleanup much more manageable, blending seamlessly into the kitchen’s overall design.

Our Harmonious Color Palette: Sherwin-Williams Hues

The paint colors we selected from Sherwin-Williams play a crucial role in creating the bright, airy, and inviting atmosphere of our kitchen:

Walls, ceiling, and trim – Pure White by Sherwin-Williams: This crisp, clean white provides a perfect canvas, reflecting natural light and making the space feel incredibly open and expansive. It’s a timeless choice that allows other elements, like the wood and brass accents, to truly shine.

Cabinet Color – Dorian Grey by Sherwin Williams: For the cabinetry, we chose Dorian Grey. This sophisticated, warm grey provides a beautiful contrast to the Pure White, adding depth and a touch of modern elegance. It’s a versatile shade that grounds the space, offering a refined backdrop for our brass hardware and colorful decor. Together, these two colors create a balanced and serene environment.

Living in Our Renovated Dream Kitchen

Since completing the renovation, our kitchen has truly become the vibrant heart of our home. It has transformed the way our family interacts, making meal times more joyful, homework sessions more comfortable, and gatherings more inclusive. The increased counter space means multiple cooks can work simultaneously without bumping elbows, and the large island is perfect for spreading out ingredients for baking projects with the kids. We truly appreciate the durability of the materials, knowing that this beautiful space will stand the test of time and countless family moments.

Tips for Your Own Kitchen Renovation Project

If you’re considering a kitchen renovation, especially for a larger family, here are a few takeaways from our experience:

  • Prioritize Functionality: Think about how your family uses the kitchen daily. Do you need more prep space, better storage, or a dedicated dining area? Design around these core needs.
  • Invest in Durable Materials: For high-traffic areas like countertops and flooring, choose materials that are tough, easy to clean, and long-lasting. It’s worth the investment.
  • Don’t Shy Away from DIY: Personal touches like our vent hood can add immense character and save on costs.
  • Consider the Flow: Ensure there’s a clear path between the sink, refrigerator, and stove (the “work triangle”) to maximize efficiency.
  • Blend Aesthetics with Practicality: You don’t have to sacrifice style for function. Our modern farmhouse design proves that you can have both a beautiful and highly practical kitchen.
  • Lighting is Key: Combine ambient, task, and accent lighting to create a versatile and inviting atmosphere.
