Today’s featured project emerged from an exciting and delightful challenge. Recently, we had the distinct honor of being invited by the esteemed Martha Stewart Living team to explore our creativity with one of her brand-new holiday designs. The task was to utilize her exquisite line of holiday products, exclusively available at The Home Depot. From her innovative collection, the concept of the Ornament Planter immediately captivated our imagination. We knew instantly that this elegant and unique idea would be an absolutely perfect fit for adding a touch of festive sophistication to our front door and welcoming guests with unparalleled holiday cheer. We’re excited to share every step of how this beautiful vision came to life!

One of the most appealing aspects of this Martha Stewart-inspired ornament planter project is its remarkable simplicity. You don’t need to be an experienced crafter or possess advanced DIY skills to recreate this beautiful look. The steps are straightforward, making it an ideal weekend project for anyone looking to add a personalized and elegant touch to their outdoor Christmas decorations. To begin this enchanting transformation, I selected two classic urns from The Home Depot. Their timeless design perfectly complements the architectural style of my home, providing a sturdy and elegant base for the festive display. However, the beauty of this project lies in its adaptability; feel free to choose any pot, planter, or urn that resonates with your personal aesthetic and existing decor. Whether you prefer a rustic ceramic pot, a modern metallic container, or a traditional stone urn, the choice is entirely yours. The key is selecting a vessel that provides ample space for the ornaments and greenery to create that abundant, luxurious look.
The next crucial step involves efficiently filling the interior of the urns. To ensure we weren’t using an excessive amount of decorative filler, and to provide a stable base for the subsequent layers, I opted to fill the majority of the empty space inside each urn with bubble wrap, also sourced conveniently from The Home Depot. This not only makes the project more cost-effective but also reduces the weight of the completed planter, making it easier to move if needed. Bubble wrap is an excellent choice for this purpose as it’s readily available, lightweight, and provides a good foundation.
Once the urns were adequately filled with bubble wrap, the subsequent layer involved a roll of wide burlap. I carefully draped the burlap over the top of the bubble wrap, allowing a generous amount to cascade over the sides of the urn. This intentional overhang serves a dual purpose: it beautifully conceals the utilitarian bubble wrap beneath, and more importantly, it introduces a rustic yet elegant textural element that peeks out charmingly from beneath the vibrant ornaments. The natural texture and earthy tone of the burlap create a wonderful contrast with the shiny, colorful ornaments, adding depth and visual interest to the overall design.
Following the burlap, I carefully arranged several artificial evergreen stems on top, allowing them to gently drape over the edges of the urn. This placement ensures that their lush green foliage is visible beneath the main ornament display, adding a foundational layer of natural beauty. While Martha Stewart’s original design often features real greenery, which undeniably offers a delightful fragrance and authentic texture, the practicalities of my location in Texas (where pecan branches are far more abundant than traditional evergreens!) led me to choose high-quality artificial stems. Modern artificial greenery is incredibly realistic and offers the advantage of lasting throughout the entire holiday season without wilting or requiring maintenance. This choice ensures a consistently fresh and vibrant look for your outdoor Christmas decor, year after year.
The next pivotal component of this festive arrangement is Martha Stewart’s pre-assembled 24-inch ornament wreath. This brilliant product is a true time-saver and a centerpiece in itself, arriving perfectly crafted and ready to be incorporated into your display. Its convenience cannot be overstated – no need to individually wire ornaments or painstakingly arrange them! The wreath’s robust construction and carefully chosen assortment of ornaments instantly bring a professional and polished look to the project. It’s truly one of those ingenious items that makes holiday decorating both simple and spectacular, offering an immediate touch of Martha’s signature elegance.
With the foundational layers in place, the pre-made Martha Stewart ornament wreath is simply placed directly on top of the burlap and evergreen stems. Position it centrally within the urn, ensuring it rests securely and evenly. This step immediately defines the main structure of the ornament planter, creating a vibrant circular frame. The carefully chosen color palette and varied textures of the wreath’s ornaments instantly draw the eye, establishing a rich and inviting base for the focal point of the display.
To truly fill out the center of the wreath and create a sense of luxurious abundance, I used an assortment of Martha Stewart ornaments from The Home Depot. The goal here was to create a delightful “mountain” or mound of ornaments within the wreath’s opening. Instead of simply scattering them, I strategically piled them higher in the center, allowing them to gently tumble outwards. This technique adds incredible depth and dimension to the planter, making it appear overflowing with festive cheer. The variety of sizes, finishes, and colors within Martha Stewart’s ornament collection ensures a cohesive yet dynamic look, catching the light and sparkling beautifully, especially under outdoor holiday lighting.
To add a personalized and charming final touch to each urn, I crafted a cute bow using decorative burlap ribbon. I carefully attached the bow to the front of each urn using a hot glue gun, ensuring it was securely fastened. For those who might be hesitant about using glue directly on their urns or prefer a less permanent solution, the ribbon can easily be tied around the urn or secured with floral wire, offering flexibility without compromising the aesthetic. This small detail truly completes the look, adding a handcrafted feel and a focal point to the base of the display.
Extending the festive theme to the entire entryway, I decided to crown our front door with another matching ornament wreath. This creates a cohesive and inviting look, tying the entire porch decoration together beautifully. To hang this wreath, I utilized the same decorative burlap ribbon, ensuring a consistent aesthetic throughout.
