DIY Sliding Barn Door Media Console: Elevate Your Home with a Hidden TV Cabinet
After much anticipation and dedicated effort, my magnificent Sliding Barn Door Media Console is finally complete! If you recall the initial components—the dresser and bookcase sections—you’ll undoubtedly notice the transformative paint job. This aesthetic overhaul was a deliberate choice, driven by our decision to upgrade to a king-sized bed. I envisioned staining our new bed frame with Varathane’s gorgeous Briarsmoke stain, and the console’s original Early American finish simply wouldn’t complement it. Furthermore, I sought a striking contrast between the rustic charm of the barn doors and the console’s sleek frame, making paint the perfect solution to achieve this harmonious balance. The result is a piece that not only serves its functional purpose but also enhances our master bedroom with sophisticated style.
Witness the console’s elegance with the custom-built barn doors gracefully shut, revealing a refined, decorated bookcase facade:

And here it is, showcasing its practical design, with the barn doors effortlessly glided open to reveal the hidden television:

I meticulously designed and constructed this media console specifically for our master bedroom. My primary goal was to ingeniously hide our television when not in use, creating a more serene and less cluttered aesthetic. Beyond its clever concealment, the unit also addresses our need for substantial dresser storage, making it a truly versatile and indispensable piece of furniture. The beauty of this design lies in its dual functionality: when the barn doors are closed, it seamlessly transforms into a beautifully decorated bookcase, adding charm and character to the room rather than merely housing electronics.
Today, I am thrilled to share the detailed plans for two critical components of this project: the “bridge” that supports the barn door track and, of course, the stunning sliding barn doors themselves. For those eager to replicate this project, you can find the high-quality barn door track I personally selected from our talented friend, Tyler Wayne, right HERE! Let’s embark on this rewarding DIY journey together.
Building the Essential Bridge for Your Media Console
The bridge is a crucial structural element of your sliding barn door media console, as it provides the robust support necessary for the barn door track. Precision is key in this stage to ensure smooth operation and longevity of your console. You can access and print the comprehensive free plans for the bridge HERE.

To begin constructing the bridge, start by making all the necessary cuts according to the provided plans. A crucial step here is to accurately measure the span between your two bookcase components. This measurement ensures a perfect, custom fit for your media console. Once your wood pieces are cut, use your Kreg Jig to drill precise 3/4″ pocket holes into the shorter 1×4 pieces. The Kreg Jig is an indispensable tool for creating strong, concealed joints, making your project both sturdy and aesthetically pleasing. Our preferred Kreg Jig model can be found easily on Amazon.
With the pocket holes drilled, your bridge support pieces are now prepped and ready for assembly to the main frame:

Now, it’s time to secure these support pieces to the main structure. Ensure proper alignment before fastening.

Carefully attach the 1×4 pieces to the long 2×4 frame using 1 1/4″ pocket hole screws and a generous application of wood glue. The combination of screws and glue creates a remarkably strong joint, essential for the stability of your console. Always refer to the printable plans for the precise placement and spacing of these 1×4 support pieces to ensure structural integrity and correct dimensions for the barn door track.
Below is a visual of the bridge structure after all the 1×4 supports have been securely attached to the 2×4 frame, demonstrating the foundational strength being built:

Next, replicate the process by attaching the second long 1×4 frame piece to the opposing side of the bridge structure. This completes the core framework, creating a robust box-like foundation.

With the frame established, carefully lay the long sheet of plywood atop the bridge structure. This plywood will form the top surface, providing a smooth and stable base.

Secure the plywood to the bridge frame using 1 1/4″ brad nails and wood glue. Apply glue to the framework before laying the plywood to ensure maximum adhesion. The brad nails will hold the plywood in place while the glue sets, creating a permanent and durable bond.

Following the same method, attach the smaller piece of plywood to the end section of the bridge. This consistent application of wood glue and brad nails ensures a uniform and secure finish across the entire surface.

Now, let’s turn our attention to the trim work, which will give the bridge a polished and professional look. Begin by making precise miter cuts for the trim pieces. For the long front pieces, start by cutting a 45° angle from one end. Then, dry-fit the piece in its intended position and carefully mark where the second cut should be made. This technique ensures the most accurate and seamless miter joint, resulting in a perfectly flush finish.

Once cut, attach this front trim piece to the face of the bridge (the 2×4 side). Use 1 1/4″ brad nails and wood glue, ensuring the trim is flush and tightly secured for a clean, integrated appearance.

For the side trim pieces, start by cutting a 45° angle on one end. Then, hold the piece in place against the bridge and mark the other end for a straight cut. This method allows for a perfect fit against the mitered front piece and a clean edge on the console’s side.

Congratulations! The structural assembly of the bridge is now complete. The next step is to prepare it for its final finish—whether that’s painting or staining—to match the overall aesthetic of your media console. This solid bridge forms the backbone for your barn doors, ensuring both functionality and durability.

Securing Your Sliding Barn Door Media Console to the Wall
Given the considerable weight of the sliding barn doors and the overall height of this media console unit, ensuring its stability and preventing it from tipping forward is paramount for safety. This section details the vital steps to securely anchor your console to the wall, protecting both your valuable belongings and, most importantly, everyone in your home.

To achieve maximum stability, I cut scrap 2×4 pieces to a length slightly shorter than the width of each bookcase. These cleats will act as anchor points. Using my innovative Quiet Strike Pulse Driver, I securely attached these 2×4s directly into the wall studs. The Quiet Strike Pulse Driver is a remarkable tool; it functions much like an impact driver, combining hammering and drilling action to effortlessly drive screws, but with significantly reduced noise. This makes it incredibly efficient for attaching anything to walls, saving you effort and minimizing disruption!

Most wall studs are spaced 16″ apart on center. By cutting your 2×4 cleats longer than this, you increase your chances of hitting at least two studs per cleat, ensuring superior stability. I used robust 3 1/2″ Spax screws to fasten the 2×4 cleats firmly to the wall studs. These high-quality Spax screws are designed for strong wood-to-wood and wood-to-metal connections and are readily available on Amazon.

I installed two 2×4 cleats behind each bookcase tower, making sure to use a level for perfectly straight placement. Once the cleats were secured, I then attached the bookcases directly to these 2×4s using additional 3 1/2″ Spax screws. This method creates an incredibly strong, unyielding connection, preventing any movement of the console unit.

For an ultimate layer of security and rigidity, I also attached the dresser component to each of the adjacent bookcases. To do this, I removed the dresser drawers, allowing access to the interior. From inside the dresser, I drove 1 1/4″ Spax screws through the dresser’s drawer cleats and directly into the bookcase frame. I repeated this process several times on both sides, and at both the front and back of the dresser, ensuring an incredibly stable and integrated unit. Once the paint on the bridge was completely dry, I securely attached it to the top of the bookcases using 1 1/4″ Spax screws, completing the console’s main structure.
Crafting Your Custom Sliding Barn Doors
Now for the centerpiece of our media console: the beautiful sliding barn doors! These doors are not only functional, providing a clever way to hide your television, but also serve as a significant design element. For detailed, printable plans for building these barn doors, click HERE!

To construct the barn doors, I began with sheets of 3/4″ Purebond Plywood. I opted for Birch plywood due to its cost-effectiveness, but any species will work just as well for this project. To save time and ensure precise, straight cuts, I had the hardware store conveniently rip the plywood to the exact dimensions required for my doors.

I started by cutting the pieces for the top and bottom face trim of the doors. After these pieces were cut to size, I applied a generous and even layer of wood glue to the back of each trim piece. This ensures a strong, lasting bond to the plywood panel.

With the glue applied, I carefully positioned and attached the trim pieces to the top and bottom edges of the plywood panels. I secured them firmly with 1 1/4″ brad nails, ensuring that the edges of the trim were perfectly flush with the edges of the plywood. This creates a clean, uniform border for the door.

Next, I measured and cut the side trim pieces to their precise lengths. Following the same technique used for the top and bottom trim, I applied wood glue and attached them with 1 1/4″ brad nails. This completes the outer frame of your barn door, laying the foundation for its decorative elements.
The framing of your barn door is quite straightforward, isn’t it? The simple process yields a robust and clean foundation for the intricate design to come.

To prepare for the decorative pattern, locate the very center of your plywood panel and draw a straight line from top to bottom. This central line will serve as your essential guide for accurately laying out and cutting the various design elements, ensuring a symmetrical and visually appealing pattern.

For the first set of diagonal slats in your barn door design, begin by cutting a 45° angle off of one end of a 1×4 board. This initial cut establishes the start of your geometric pattern.

With the 45° cut made, dry-fit the slat in its approximate position on the door. Then, carefully mark where the second miter cut needs to be made on the other end. This iterative process ensures a precise fit for each piece within the design.

As you can observe, the marks clearly indicate where to make the corresponding 45° miter cut, ensuring that each slat aligns perfectly with the design. Consistency in your marking and cutting technique is key to a polished final product.

Proceed to make the corresponding miter cut on the other end of the slat. This creates the exact angle needed for the piece to fit snugly into your geometric pattern.

Now, attach the first set of slats using 1 1/4″ brad nails and wood glue. Notice that I began with the second row of slats. This strategic starting point ensures that these pieces meet precisely at the very top center point of the door, creating a symmetrical and impactful focal point for the design.

Next, following the same precise marking and cutting technique used for the previous slats, prepare the pieces for the top corners of the door. These angular sections will be cut from leftover 1×6 boards to ensure a substantial and well-defined appearance.

Securely attach these top corner pattern pieces using 1 1/4″ brad nails and a strong wood glue. Ensure they align perfectly with the adjacent slats and the outer trim for a seamless integration into the overall barn door design.

Observe the progress of your barn door design. This foundational work sets the stage for the repeating pattern. Now, you will proceed to mark for the subsequent row of slats. This particular cut will be consistent for the next 13 rows, establishing a rhythmic and attractive diagonal pattern across the door’s surface.

As you near the bottom of your barn door, specifically when you reach the second to last row of slats, accurately mark and make your cuts for that specific row. Then, carefully attach these pieces to integrate them into the flowing diagonal pattern.

The final bottom corner pieces will be expertly cut from your remaining scrap 1×6 material, ensuring a cohesive finish that ties the entire pattern together. This maximizes material efficiency and reduces waste.

With all the intricate pattern pieces meticulously cut and attached, the core design of your barn door is complete! The next phase involves applying the side trim, which will provide a refined finish and conceal any rough edges.

To give your barn doors a clean, professional finish and effectively hide the rough plywood edges, we’ll now cover the sides with 1×2 trim pieces. Measure and cut these side trim pieces to fit precisely. Attach them securely with 1 1/4″ brad nails and wood glue, ensuring that the edges of the 1×2 trim are perfectly flush with the sides of the door. This step significantly elevates the overall appearance.

Finally, measure and cut the corresponding bottom and top trim pieces for the sides. Attach them using the identical method of 1 1/4″ brad nails and wood glue, completing the seamless frame around your barn door panels.

That’s it for the construction! Your barn doors are structurally complete. Now, the crucial step for a beautiful finish: a thorough sanding. I used a 120-grit sanding pad on my Ryobi 18V Orbital sander to smooth out all surfaces, preparing the wood perfectly for staining.

For the exquisite finish, I applied one generous coat of Varathane’s Briarsmoke stain. My preferred method for large pieces like these is using a lamb’s wool applicator, which can typically be found alongside stains at your local Home Depot. Allow the stain to penetrate for approximately 5 minutes, then use a clean cloth to wipe off the excess, blending as you go to achieve a consistent, rich color. A valuable tip: If Briarsmoke is difficult to find in your area, you can achieve a very similar, stunning look by mixing Varathane Weathered Gray and Dark Walnut stains in a 50:50 ratio. Varathane is our go-to stain brand because it eliminates the need for a wood conditioner and dries to the touch in about an hour, making projects quicker and simpler! You can explore a wide variety of Varathane stain colors on Amazon.

Behold the finished look of the barn door, beautifully stained with Varathane Briarsmoke. The quick-drying, conditioner-free application makes Varathane an absolute favorite for achieving professional-grade results on large DIY projects.

Attaching the Sliding Barn Door Hardware
The final step in bringing your sliding barn door media console to life is the installation of the hardware. I sourced my barn door hardware from our incredibly talented friend, Tyler Wayne, a local metal worker in the Dallas area. He custom-designed this hardware specifically to complement this console, ensuring a perfect fit and aesthetic harmony. You can find this exceptional hardware for sale on his Etsy shop HERE.

First, I meticulously determined the precise hanging position for my barn doors. My goal was for the doors to rest just above the console’s toe kick, aligning perfectly with the bottom of the face frame. I measured the height of the door, marked that point, and then added a few inches to account for the door straps. Next, I marked where the wheels would meet the top of the barn door track. Using a reliable level, I drew a continuous, straight line across the entire span of the console. This line served as my guide, indicating the exact position directly beneath which the barn door track would be installed.

Once the guide line was established, I held the barn door track against it and marked the precise locations for each bolt hole. Accuracy here is vital for a smooth-gliding door.

To make the installation process significantly easier, especially when working alone, I inserted temporary wood screws directly into the marked holes. Then, I simply slid the barn door track over these screws. This clever technique eliminates the need for a second person to hold the heavy track in place, and it also effectively pre-drills the holes for your permanent bolts, streamlining the entire process.

Next, I removed one temporary wood screw at a time. In its place, I inserted a spacer behind the bolt hole, ensuring the track sits slightly off the bridge, allowing the doors to slide freely. This spacer is essential for proper clearance.

Then, I drove the bolt through the barn door track, into the spacer, and firmly into the front of the bridge. For this step, my Quiet Strike with a hex bit proved incredibly useful, making quick and quiet work of securing each bolt firmly.

I meticulously repeated this bolting process for every marked hole along the entire length of the barn door track, ensuring a consistently secure and sturdy installation. Each bolt contributes to the overall strength and reliability of the sliding mechanism.

Included with your barn door hardware will be two crucial “stops.” These small but mighty components are installed at both ends of the barn door track. They are essential for preventing the doors from gliding past their intended range and, more importantly, from accidentally coming off the track entirely. A minor detail with a major impact on safety and functionality!

Ensure that the stops are oriented to face inwards, positioned on the inside of the hex bolts. This placement allows them to effectively engage with the door hangers and halt the doors’ movement at the designated end points.

Finally, attach the wheels to your barn doors and carefully hang them onto the installed track. As seen in the image, I also installed discreet guides to the bottom of the console. These guides are crucial for keeping the doors stable, preventing them from swinging forward and backward, and ensuring a smooth, consistent slide.
Despite appearing to have many steps, the construction of this beautiful DIY sliding barn door media console is surprisingly manageable. Each stage is straightforward, and the satisfaction of building such a functional and stylish piece for your home is incredibly rewarding!
