This project was a labor of love, meticulously designed to create a bathroom that is not only highly functional for our growing boys but also embodies a timeless style with a distinctly masculine appeal, ensuring it remains beautiful for years to come.
Crafting the Vision: Our Journey to a Stylish & Durable Boys’ Bathroom
Every successful home renovation begins with a clear vision and thoughtful planning, especially when designing a space for active kids. For our boys’ bathroom, the goal was to strike a perfect balance: a space that felt rugged and mature, yet sophisticated and not overly themed. As our boys are getting older, we wanted to move away from childish designs and create an environment they could grow into – something that would remain stylish and relevant through their teenage years and beyond. This meant focusing on durable, easy-to-maintain materials, classic patterns, and a cohesive color palette that exuded understated elegance.
Our search for the perfect tiles led us directly to The Tile Shop, a true treasure trove where I had the pleasure of selecting every single piece for this renovation. The ability to see, touch, and compare different tiles in person, to lay them out and truly envision them in your space, makes all the difference in making confident design choices. Their extensive selection and the knowledgeable staff made the entire process truly amazing and incredibly inspiring, transforming what could have been an overwhelming task into an enjoyable exploration of design possibilities.
The Bold Statement: Black Hexagonal Wall Tile as a Focal Point
The undisputed centerpiece of our masculine bathroom design is undoubtedly the striking black hexagonal tile feature wall. This choice was deliberate, aiming for a look that was strong, sophisticated, and made a clear statement without being visually overwhelming. Hexagonal tiles offer a fantastic blend of vintage charm and modern sensibility, providing a unique texture and visual interest that immediately draws the eye. We chose the “Noir Hex 2″” tile, which delivered precisely the dramatic yet refined aesthetic we were after. Its deep, rich black hue provides a wonderful contrast against lighter elements and establishes a strong, grounding foundation for the room’s overall design narrative.
To give this dramatic focal point a polished and perfectly finished appearance, we meticulously added Noir Honed Somerset trim pieces along both the top and bottom edges of the hex tiles. These trim pieces serve not only a crucial functional purpose by providing a clean, protective edge but also an aesthetic one, beautifully framing the intricate hexagonal pattern and adding an extra layer of custom detail and luxury. For this entire section of the wall, we made the strategic decision to opt for a black grout. This choice was paramount in creating a seamless and cohesive look, allowing the sophisticated pattern of the black hex tiles to truly pop and command attention without being interrupted by contrasting grout lines. The result is a bold, sophisticated statement wall that perfectly anchors the entire bathroom’s design, embodying both strength and elegance.
Elegant Simplicity: Subway Style Shower Walls for Modern Appeal
Moving into the shower area, we wanted to maintain a sense of elegance and continuity with the rest of the bathroom, while also introducing a different texture and pattern to prevent monotony. The classic subway tile style was the obvious choice for its timeless appeal, remarkable versatility, and clean lines. However, we weren’t just looking for any subway tile; we specifically sought one that would subtly echo the black tones of the hexagonal feature wall without directly competing with its boldness. Our selection, the Mojave Honed and Filled 2×8″ tiles, proved to be absolutely perfect for achieving this delicate balance.
What truly makes these Mojave tiles stand out and adds immense character to the shower space is the incredible variation within each individual piece. The “Honed and Filled” designation means they possess a soft, matte finish, and any natural voids or imperfections inherent in the stone are carefully filled, creating a smooth, refined, and highly durable surface. More importantly, these particular Mojave tiles possess subtle veins and flecks of darker, almost charcoal tones, which create an organic and sophisticated look that beautifully complements the primary black hex wall. The slight imperfections and natural nuances in the stone prevent the space from feeling sterile or overly uniform, instead adding a desirable depth and unique character. The 2×8 inch format is a contemporary take on the traditional subway tile, providing a sleek and elongated aesthetic that enhances the feeling of height and spaciousness within the shower enclosure. I seriously love how genuinely gorgeous and refined these shower walls turned out!
A Foundation of Style: Diagonal Floor Tiles with a Custom Noir Accent
To complete the cohesive and sophisticated look of the boys’ bathroom, we extended the elegant Mojave tiles to the bathroom floor. However, we introduced a distinctive twist to elevate the design: we used 12×12 inch Mojave tiles and laid them on a diagonal. This strategic placement isn’t merely a design preference; laying tiles diagonally can significantly make a smaller room appear larger and more expansive, while also adding a dynamic visual flow that instantly elevates the space beyond a simple, standard grid pattern. The warm, natural tones of the Mojave against the cooler black accents create a beautiful and balanced contrast, ensuring the floor is both exceptionally practical and a key, contributing design element.
However, my absolute favorite touch – the detail that truly ties the entire room together and elevates it to a custom level – is the integration of small 2″ Noir accent pieces into the floor pattern. These little black squares were meticulously cut down from this larger piece of Noir Honed Somerset trim and carefully placed in the exact middle of every four 12×12 Mojave floor tiles. This thoughtful and precise addition creates a subtle, repeating pattern across the floor that beautifully connects the black hexagonal wall tiles to the floor, echoing the primary accent color and material throughout the entire space. It’s these specific custom details that transform a good design into an exceptional one, powerfully demonstrating how seemingly small elements can have a profound and lasting impact on the overall aesthetic and feel of a room. I truly LOVE it, and the high-end, bespoke look it imparts to the boys’ bathroom!
