Handcrafted Pretend Kitchen

I am absolutely thrilled to finally unveil the comprehensive, free plans for this exceptional DIY Play Kitchen, a project I meticulously designed and built for my daughter! As a proud parent of a tall 8-year-old, I faced a unique challenge last Christmas: finding a play kitchen suitable for a “big kid.” After extensive online searching, it became clear that the market lacked robust, age-appropriate play kitchens. My daughter had long outgrown her previous tiny model, which we had since donated. Unwilling to invest in another diminutive set, I took matters into my own hands, embarking on a creative journey to design and construct a custom play kitchen that would truly meet her needs and ignite her imagination.

Large DIY Play Kitchen with Farmhouse Sink and Realistic Burners
DIY Play Kitchen: Perfectly sized for growing children.

This project has been, without a doubt, the most enjoyable and rewarding build in my decade of woodworking experience. My primary objective wasn’t just to craft a play kitchen that was proportionate for an older child, but also to infuse it with a remarkably realistic aesthetic and functional details. I pushed my creative boundaries, and the result is truly something special. I managed to incorporate highly sought-after features like a charming farmhouse sink, authentic-looking stove burners, and a practical peninsula, transforming a simple plaything into a miniature culinary masterpiece.

Supply List for Your DIY Play Kitchen

Before you dive into building this dream play kitchen, gather all the necessary materials and tools. Having everything organized beforehand will ensure a smoother and more enjoyable building process. Remember, precise measurements and quality materials are key to a durable and beautiful finished product.

Building Supplies

  • A detailed shop list and cut list, including specific wood dimensions and quantities, are conveniently available within the downloadable PDF Plans. This ensures you have all the precise measurements needed for accurate cuts.

Essential Tools

Equipping yourself with the right tools is crucial for this project. While some tools are optional for certain tasks, having them on hand will significantly improve efficiency and accuracy, resulting in a professional-looking finish.

  • Miter Saw: Essential for precise, angled, and straight cuts on your wood pieces.
  • Drill: A versatile tool for pre-drilling holes and driving screws.
  • Kreg Jig: Indispensable for creating strong, concealed pocket-hole joints.
  • Jig Saw: Perfect for cutting curves and intricate shapes, especially for the sink opening and burner holes.
  • Brad Nailer: Ideal for quickly attaching trim and smaller pieces with minimal visible fasteners.
  • Pin Nailer (optional): Offers an even smaller nail head than a brad nailer for nearly invisible fastening on delicate trim work.
  • Stapler (optional): Useful for attaching back panels quickly and securely.

Realistic Accessories

These carefully selected accessories are what truly elevate this play kitchen, giving it that authentic, miniature-appliance feel. Each item contributes to the overall realism and charm, making playtime even more immersive for your child.

  • Osborne Wood Products Table Legs: These elegant legs add a furniture-like quality, creating a stylish peninsula or island.
  • Long Cabinet Pulls: For the refrigerator doors, mimicking real kitchen hardware.
  • Short Cabinet Pulls: Perfect for smaller doors, such as the oven or sink cabinet.
  • Sink Door Latch: Provides a functional touch to the sink cabinet door.
  • Hinges: For all cabinet and oven doors, ensuring smooth operation.
  • Door Catch: To keep cabinet doors securely closed.
  • Farmhouse Sink: A standout feature that adds significant character and realism.
  • Faucet: A realistic faucet that completes the sink area.
  • Stove Burners: For a genuinely interactive and realistic cooking experience.
  • Oven Knobs: Functional knobs that turn, adding to the immersive play.
  • Plexiglass: To create a transparent oven door window.

Sink and Oven Cabinet Build: Creating the Heart of the Kitchen

This section focuses on constructing the main cabinet unit, which will house both the realistic farmhouse sink and the functional oven. Precision in these steps is vital for the overall structural integrity and aesthetic appeal of your play kitchen.

Step 1: Preparing Side Panels and Shelves

Cutting side pieces and shelves for the play kitchen

Begin by cutting your side pieces and internal shelves to the specified dimensions provided in your downloadable plans. Pay close attention to the details, using a jigsaw to precisely cut the notches out of the corners of these pieces. These notches are crucial for ensuring a flush fit with other components.

Marking notches with a speed square for accuracy

For unparalleled accuracy when marking your notches, I highly recommend utilizing a speed square. This tool helps ensure all your marks are perfectly straight and square, which is essential for a clean build.

  • You can find the reliable speed square that I use HERE.
Drilling pocket holes with a Kreg Jig for strong joints

Next, use your Kreg Jig to drill 3/4″ pocket holes into both ends of each shelf piece. These pocket holes will create strong, concealed joints when assembling the cabinet structure.

  • You can find our favorite Kreg Jig Model for efficient and precise joinery HERE.
Attaching shelves to the sink side panel with pocket hole screws

With pocket holes drilled, carefully attach the shelves to one of the sink side panels. Ensure they are aligned correctly according to your plans.

Adding the middle sink panel to complete the cabinet structure

Proceed to attach the middle sink panel, creating the internal division for the sink and oven sections.

Securing the final side panel of the play kitchen cabinet

Finally, secure the remaining side panel. For all these attachments, use 1 1/4″ pocket hole screws combined with a strong wood glue to ensure maximum durability and stability for your play kitchen.

Step 2: Assembling the Base Frame

Attaching base frame pieces to the cabinet structure

Cut the bottom base frame pieces to their specified sizes. Drill 3/4″ pocket holes into both ends of each piece. These frame pieces will form the foundational support for the entire cabinet. Attach them securely to the side and middle cabinet pieces using 1 1/4″ pocket hole screws and wood glue. This creates a solid base for the structure.

Step 3: Attaching the Toe Kick

Notching the toe kick for a perfect fit

Cut the toe kick piece to size. Carefully notch out 3/4″x3/4″ squares at the appropriate locations to accommodate the side and middle cabinet pieces. This ensures a seamless fit and a professional finish.

Securing the toe kick to the base frame

Once notched, attach the toe kick to the assembled base frame using 1 1/4″ brad nails and wood glue. The toe kick not only adds stability but also provides a neat, finished look to the bottom of the play kitchen, preventing small toys from rolling underneath.

Step 4: Constructing the Face Frame and Oven Catch Block

Assembling the face frame with Kreg Jig

Cut all the face frame pieces to their specified lengths. Drill 3/4″ pocket holes at one end of each vertical piece and at both ends of the top and middle horizontal pieces. Assemble these pieces, attaching them together with 1 1/4″ pocket hole screws and wood glue. For a perfectly flush attachment, I recommend using a Kreg face clamp, which holds the boards flat while you secure them.

  • You can find the convenient Kreg face clamp that I rely on HERE.
Attaching the oven door catch block to the face frame

Now, cut the oven door catch block to size. Center this block on the newly assembled face frame and attach it with 1 1/4″ brad nails and wood glue. This small but important piece serves as the anchor for the oven door catch. While I initially added this later in the build, it’s significantly easier and more precise to integrate it while you are constructing the face frame.

Step 5: Securing the Face Frame

Attaching the completed face frame to the cabinet

Carefully align the assembled face frame with the front of the cabinet structure. Attach it securely using 1 1/4″ brad nails and a generous application of wood glue. This connection provides both structural integrity and a clean, finished appearance.

  • For easy and precise glue application, check out our favorite glue bottle dispenser HERE!
Ensuring the face frame is flush with the cabinet top

Ensure that the top edge of the face frame is perfectly flush with the top edge of the cabinet. This flush alignment is crucial for the countertop installation later on, guaranteeing a smooth, even surface.

Step 6: Installing Back Support Pieces

Attaching back support pieces for added strength

Cut the back support pieces to size and drill 3/4″ pocket holes at both ends of each piece. These supports provide crucial backing for the rear panels and add rigidity to the entire structure. Attach them 1/4″ from the very back edge of the cabinet, creating a recess for the backing material. Use 1 1/4″ pocket hole screws and wood glue. For the sink side, specifically position its support 1 1/2″ from the top of the cabinet to ensure sufficient space for the faucet installation.

Step 7: Positioning the Sink Support

Installing the sink support for the farmhouse sink

Cut the sink support piece to size and drill 3/4″ pocket holes at each end. This piece will provide the necessary base for your charming farmhouse sink. Attach it to the sink side of the cabinet using 1 1/4″ pocket hole screws and wood glue. The precise positioning is key: it should sit 7″ from the front of the cabinet panel, 2″ from the back, and 1 5/8″ from the top edge. Double-check these measurements to ensure your sink will fit perfectly.

Step 8: Building the Sink Doors

Assembling the sink cabinet doors with trim

Cut the sink door planks to their specified dimensions. Then, accurately measure and cut the 1/4″ trim pieces to fit around the edges of the planks. Attach this trim to the plywood planks using either 5/8″ pin nails or brad nails and wood glue. Repeat this process to build two identical doors. As a fun check, I couldn’t resist test-fitting the farmhouse sink to ensure everything was coming together beautifully!

Step 9: Crafting the Oven Door with Plexiglass

Cutting the oven door opening and fitting plexiglass

Begin by cutting the main oven door panel to size. Using a jigsaw, carefully cut out a 9″x8″ square opening, which will serve as your oven window. Next, cut the plexiglass to size with a miter saw, ensuring it’s slightly larger than your opening. Attach the plexiglass to the back side of the oven door using 3/4″ multi-use screws in each corner, creating a realistic and safe viewing window.

  • You can find the durable Plexiglass that I used for this project HERE.
Adding decorative trim to the oven door

Cut the oven door trim pieces to size. Assemble the vertical and horizontal trim pieces by attaching them with 7/8″ brad nails. Center this trim assembly over the front of the oven door, ensuring it neatly conceals the rough edges from your jigsaw cuts. Secure the trim to the front of the door with 7/8″ brad nails and wood glue, giving the oven door a refined, professional look.

Step 10: Hinges for Sink and Oven Doors

Preparing to attach sink and oven doors with hinges

Attach the completed sink and oven doors to the main cabinet structure using hinges. While it’s certainly possible to attach them now, I found it much easier to paint the cabinet and doors separately before adding the hinges. This allows for a cleaner finish without needing to tape off hardware.

Refrigerator Cabinet Build: Crafting the Play Kitchen’s Storage Unit

The refrigerator adds another layer of realism and interactive play to your DIY kitchen. This section guides you through building its sturdy frame and functional doors.

Step 1: Constructing Refrigerator Sides and Shelves

Cutting refrigerator sides and shelves to size

Begin by cutting the refrigerator side panels and interior shelves to the dimensions specified in your plans. Once cut, drill 3/4″ pocket holes into the sides of each shelf, preparing them for strong, hidden joinery.

Assembling refrigerator shelves to side panels

Attach the shelves to the refrigerator side panels using 1 1/4″ pocket hole screws and wood glue. Ensure that the shelves are evenly spaced and perfectly level for a functional and aesthetically pleasing interior.

Step 2: Assembling the Refrigerator Base

Attaching the refrigerator base frame piece

Cut the refrigerator base frame piece to size and drill 3/4″ pocket holes into each end. This piece will form the bottom perimeter of your refrigerator unit. Attach this base piece securely to the refrigerator side panels using 1 1/4″ pocket hole screws and wood glue, creating a robust foundation.

Step 3: Attaching the Refrigerator Toe Kick

Notching and attaching the refrigerator toe kick

Cut the refrigerator toe kick piece to size, then carefully cut out 3/4″ notches at each corner to accommodate the side panels. This step ensures a seamless, built-in look. Attach the toe kick piece to the refrigerator base frame using 1 1/4″ brad nails and wood glue, completing the lower part of the unit with a clean finish.

Step 4: Building the Refrigerator Face Frame

Assembling the refrigerator face frame with pocket holes

Cut the refrigerator face frame pieces to their designated sizes. Drill 3/4″ pocket holes at each end of the vertical pieces and at each end of the middle horizontal pieces. Assemble these components, attaching them together with 1 1/4″ pocket hole screws and wood glue. The face frame provides a finished edge and a stable surface for mounting the refrigerator doors.

Step 5: Securing the Refrigerator Face Frame

Attaching the refrigerator face frame flush with the cabinet

Carefully attach the completed face frame to the front of the refrigerator cabinet. Use 1 1/4″ brad nails and wood glue for a strong bond. It’s imperative that the face frame is perfectly flush with all edges of the cabinet, creating a clean and professional appearance ready for the doors.

Step 6: Crafting the Refrigerator Doors

Building the refrigerator doors with decorative trim

Cut the main refrigerator door panels to size. Then, measure and cut the decorative trim pieces to fit precisely around the edges of each door. Attach this trim to the door panels using 5/8″ pin nails or finish nails and wood glue. This detailing gives the play refrigerator a more realistic and charming aesthetic, mimicking full-sized appliance doors.

Step 7: Hinges for Refrigerator Doors

Attaching hinges to the refrigerator doors

Attach the finished doors to the refrigerator cabinet using hinges. Just as with the oven and sink doors, I highly recommend waiting to attach the doors until after you’ve applied paint or stain to both the cabinet and the doors. This approach simplifies the finishing process and leads to a much cleaner, more polished result.

Countertop and Peninsula Build: The Functional & Stylish Surface

The countertop is where all the culinary magic happens in a play kitchen. This section guides you through creating a durable and realistic surface, complete with an integrated peninsula for extended play. This addition not only provides more space but also enhances the overall aesthetic, making it feel like a truly custom piece of furniture.

Step 1: Assembling the Peninsula Legs and Apron

Cutting and preparing legs and apron for the peninsula

Cut the chosen table legs and the apron piece to their specified sizes. Drill 3/4″ pocket holes into each end of the apron piece. These elements will form the stylish peninsula of your play kitchen.

  • We sourced these beautiful legs from Osborne Wood Products, adding a touch of elegance. You can find the exact legs we used HERE!
Attaching the apron to the peninsula legs with pocket hole screws

Center the apron piece precisely on each leg and attach it securely using 1 1/4″ pocket hole screws and wood glue. This creates a sturdy and attractive base for the extended countertop.

Step 2: Cutting the Countertop for Sink and Burners

Cutting the countertop for the farmhouse sink opening

Cut the main countertop piece to its overall size. Using a jigsaw, carefully cut out the designated opening for the farmhouse sink. Measure precisely according to your sink’s dimensions to ensure a snug fit.

Jigsaw cutting two 6-inch circles for stove burners

Also with your jigsaw, cut out two 6″ circles on the countertop. These openings are specifically designed to accommodate the realistic stove burners, transforming a flat surface into a functional play cooking area.

Attaching the Countertop

Securing the countertop to the leg assembly and sink cabinet

First, attach the countertop to the assembled leg and apron peninsula. Use 2 1/2″ wood screws, driving them from the top of the countertop down into each leg, ensuring a strong connection. Next, attach the countertop to the main sink cabinet using 1 1/4″ brad nails and wood glue. During this exciting phase, I couldn’t resist test-fitting all the adorable accessories to visualize the final look!

Staining the countertop and painting the play kitchen

Now comes the fun part – adding the finish! I opted to beautifully stain the countertop, giving it a rich, natural wood look, while painting the rest of the play kitchen in a sophisticated shade called Seine by Valspar. This two-tone approach adds depth and character.

  • You can find the exact stain I used HERE to achieve a similar elegant finish.
Applying a protective finish to the stained countertop

Once the stain was thoroughly dry, I applied a durable protective finish. This step is crucial for shielding the countertop from daily wear and tear, ensuring its beauty lasts through countless hours of play.

  • You can find the high-quality protective finish that I used HERE!

Adding the Finishing Touches: Bringing Your Play Kitchen to Life

With the main structure assembled and finished, it’s time to add the small details that transform your DIY project into a fully functional and incredibly realistic play kitchen. These finishing touches are what make all the difference, enhancing both aesthetics and playability.

Step 1: Installing the Play Kitchen Faucet

Spray painting the play kitchen faucet in modern gold

To give the faucet a chic, modern look that complements the kitchen’s aesthetic, I began by spray painting it in a beautiful modern gold finish. This small detail significantly elevates its visual appeal.

  • You can find the elegant faucet that I used HERE.
  • For the perfect touch, here’s the spray paint that I used HERE.
Marking and drilling faucet holes in the countertop

Utilize the plastic template piece that typically accompanies the faucet to accurately mark the positions for your faucet holes on the countertop. Then, use a 1″ drill bit to cut these holes cleanly, ensuring a perfect fit for the faucet base.

Securing the play kitchen faucet in place

Carefully slide the faucet into the drilled holes. From underneath, use the plastic fittings and nuts that come with the faucet to screw it firmly into place. A crucial tip: you may find it easier to temporarily remove the back support panel of the cabinet to access and secure the faucet. Once the faucet is firmly installed, reattach the back support with wood glue and 1 1/4″ pocket hole screws.

Step 2: Securing the Play Kitchen Farmhouse Sink

Installing the realistic farmhouse sink into the countertop
Detailed view of the farmhouse sink installation

For a secure and permanent installation, apply contact adhesive to both the sink support underneath the countertop and the bottom perimeter of the farmhouse sink itself. Carefully slide the sink into its designated opening, pressing firmly to ensure a strong bond. Finding the perfect farmhouse sink was a journey for me; most bathroom or utility sinks were either too deep or prohibitively expensive. This particular deli crock, found at restaurant supply sites, proved to be the ideal size and weight. If you discover a similar alternative, please share your find with our community!

  • You can find the unique deli crock sink I used HERE.
  • For a strong and lasting bond, here’s the contact adhesive that I used HERE.

Step 3: Attaching the Play Kitchen Knobs

Drilling holes for the functional play kitchen knobs

To prepare for the interactive oven knobs, drill precise holes with a 1/2″ drill bit into the front panel where the knobs will be located. Ensure they are evenly spaced and aligned.

Gluing the plastic piece to the play kitchen knob

For a seamless assembly, apply contact adhesive to securely glue the small plastic backing piece to each play kitchen knob. This step helps create a stable mounting point.

Securing the turning play kitchen knobs with screws and washers

Slide the assembled knob units into each drilled hole. From behind, secure them with a screw and washer. This clever setup allows the play kitchen knobs to freely turn, adding a fantastic layer of interactive realism for imaginative play.

  • You can find the realistic Play Kitchen Oven Knobs that I used HERE.

Step 4: Integrating the Play Kitchen Stove Burners

Applying adhesive to stove burner drip bowls

Apply contact adhesive to the rim of each stove burner drip bowl. Carefully set these bowls into the pre-cut 6″ holes on your countertop, ensuring they are centered and flush with the surface.

Sliding the realistic stove burners into place

Once the drip bowls are securely in place, simply slide a realistic burner element into each bowl. This instantly transforms your countertop into an authentic-looking stovetop, ready for countless hours of pretend cooking.

  • You can find the authentic drip bowls that I used HERE.
  • And here are the realistic burners that I sourced HERE.

Step 5: Adding Cabinet Pulls and Hinges

Attaching cabinet pulls and hinges to all play kitchen doors

Install all the doors – the sink, oven, and refrigerator – using 2″ hinges. Ensure smooth operation and proper alignment for each door.

  • You can find the durable hinges that I used for consistent performance HERE.

Once hinged, add the chosen cabinet pulls to the refrigerator doors, mimicking real appliance handles. For the sink doors, install a charming clasp closure for a unique touch. These details greatly enhance the play kitchen’s realism and functionality.

  • You can find the stylish long cabinet pulls (perfect for the refrigerator) HERE.
  • For the oven door, these short cabinet pulls are an ideal match HERE.
  • The charming sink door latch that I used can be found HERE.

Step 6: Installing the Oven Door Catch

To ensure the oven door remains neatly closed when not in use, I integrated a small but effective cabinet door catch at the top of the oven door opening.

Attaching the receiving end of the oven door catch

Attach the receiving end of the door catch to the bottom of the oven door catch block, which you installed earlier in the face frame construction.

Securing the other side of the oven door catch to the door

Next, attach the other half of the closure mechanism to the top, inside edge of the oven door itself. When closed, these two pieces will connect, holding the door securely shut.

  • You can find the reliable cabinet door catch that I used HERE.
Installing door catches on sink and refrigerator doors

For added security and realism, I also installed similar door catches at both the top and bottom of the sink and refrigerator doors. This thoughtful detail ensures all doors stay firmly closed, enhancing the overall quality and play experience.

Step 7: Attaching the Back Panels

Attaching the back panels with staples and wood glue

Once all accessories, hardware, and doors are securely attached, it’s time for the final structural step: installing the back panels. Fasten these panels with 3/4″ staples and wood glue, driving them from the back panels into the shelves and back support pieces. This completes the enclosure, adding significant rigidity and a finished look to your play kitchen.
