Hampton Patio Umbrella Tables

Craft Your Dream Patio: Building a Pottery Barn Inspired Umbrella Side Table on a Budget

Welcome back, fellow DIY enthusiasts! If you’ve been following our journey, you might recall the Pottery Barn inspired Lounge Chairs that transformed my patio last summer. They were a labor of love, providing both comfort and style without the exorbitant price tag. With the success of those chairs, my vision for a cohesive outdoor oasis naturally extended to a matching umbrella side table. This would not only provide a convenient spot for drinks and books but also anchor an umbrella for much-needed shade during those sunny afternoons.

However, as is often the case with high-end furniture, the corresponding Pottery Barn side table came with a hefty price tag of $299. For many of us, myself included, that’s simply “wayyyyy out of budget” for a single piece of patio furniture. The desire for a beautifully coordinated outdoor space shouldn’t break the bank, and that’s where the magic of DIY truly shines.

The Inspiration: High-End Style, Wallet-Friendly Price

Pottery Barn furniture is renowned for its timeless design, quality craftsmanship, and ability to create a sophisticated, comfortable atmosphere. Their outdoor collections, in particular, often feature classic lines and durable materials that perfectly complement any patio or deck. It’s easy to fall in love with their aesthetic, but the reality of their pricing can quickly bring one back down to earth. This gap between aspiration and affordability is precisely why the DIY community thrives. We believe that a stunning outdoor living space is attainable for everyone, regardless of budget.

Our previous success with the lounge chairs proved that with a little ingenuity and some elbow grease, we could replicate the desired look for a fraction of the cost. The quest for the perfect umbrella side table was no different. I was determined to find a solution that offered the same functionality and style as its expensive counterpart, but at a price point that made sense. This project wasn’t just about saving money; it was about the satisfaction of creating something beautiful and functional with my own hands, ensuring it perfectly matched the aesthetic of my existing outdoor setup.

Unlocking the Secret: Ana White’s Plans and Incredible Savings

The DIY world is a treasure trove of resources, and for this project, I turned to a true legend in the woodworking community: Ana White. Her plans are renowned for being clear, comprehensive, and incredibly accessible, even for those with intermediate woodworking skills. Thanks to her detailed Umbrella Stand plans, I was able to construct a highly similar, durable, and stylish umbrella side table for an astonishingly low cost of just $43! This translated into a total savings of over $250, a significant amount that could be reallocated to other patio enhancements or simply kept in my pocket.

Ana White’s plans empower individuals to tackle ambitious projects, providing not just blueprints but also a sense of confidence. Her approach breaks down complex builds into manageable steps, making the entire process enjoyable and rewarding. By following her guide, I was able to replicate the sturdy design and elegant lines of a high-end table, proving once again that quality and style don’t have to come with an exorbitant price tag. This project became a testament to the power of community and shared knowledge in the DIY world.

Gathering Your Essentials: Tools and Materials for Your DIY Umbrella Table

Every successful woodworking project begins with the right tools and materials. For this DIY umbrella side table, the list is quite straightforward, focusing on efficiency and durability, especially for outdoor use. Having everything ready before you start is key to a smooth building process.

Key Tools You’ll Need:

  • Kreg Jig: This was absolutely indispensable for creating strong, hidden pocket-hole joints. If you’re serious about DIY furniture, a Kreg Jig is a fantastic investment. It allows you to join wood pieces securely without visible screw heads, resulting in a clean, professional finish.
  • Drill/Driver: Essential for drilling pilot holes, driving Kreg Jig screws, and other fasteners.
  • Measuring Tape and Pencil: For accurate measurements, which are critical for a precise build.
  • Miter Saw or Circular Saw: For cutting your lumber to the exact dimensions specified in the plans. Accuracy here will save you headaches later.
  • Orbital Sander: To smooth out any rough edges and prepare the wood for finishing. A well-sanded piece accepts stain or paint much better.
  • Clamps: To hold pieces securely in place while drilling and gluing. This is crucial for stability and alignment.
  • Jigsaw: This will be necessary for cutting the circular hole for the umbrella pole in the tabletop.
  • Safety Glasses and Ear Protection: Always prioritize safety when working with power tools.

Essential Materials:

  • Lumber: The specific dimensions will be detailed in Ana White’s plans. For outdoor furniture, consider using weather-resistant wood like cedar, redwood, or pressure-treated pine. These woods naturally repel moisture and insects, extending the life of your table.
  • Gorilla Glue Wood Glue: I specifically chose Gorilla Glue Wood Glue for its incredible strength and water resistance. For outdoor projects, a high-quality, waterproof wood glue is non-negotiable to ensure the joints withstand the elements over time.
  • Kreg Jig Screws: Use screws specifically designed for pocket holes, appropriate for the thickness of your lumber. For outdoor projects, consider exterior-grade screws to prevent rust.
  • Sandpaper: Various grits for smooth finishing.
  • Outdoor Stain or Paint: To protect the wood from UV rays and moisture, and to match your existing patio decor.
  • An Umbrella: The one you plan to use with the table. I found a great one at Garden Ridge for $39.
  • A Cheap Flower Pot: For the ingenious umbrella base.
  • Quikrete (Concrete Mix): For creating a stable, heavy umbrella base inside the flower pot.

Having these items on hand will make your building process efficient and enjoyable, leading to a durable and beautiful finished product.

A Step-by-Step Journey: Building Your Umbrella Side Table

Building this table was an incredibly rewarding experience, and with Ana White’s plans, it felt much more manageable than tackling a complex piece of furniture from scratch. Here’s a glimpse into the process, emphasizing key stages:

1. Cutting and Preparing Your Wood

The first step involved precisely cutting all lumber pieces according to the dimensions provided in Ana White’s plans. Accuracy at this stage is paramount for a professional-looking finished product. I meticulously measured and cut each piece, ensuring clean, straight edges.

2. Assembling the Frame with Kreg Jig Pocket Holes

This is where the Kreg Jig became my best friend. I drilled pocket holes into the ends of the lumber pieces that would form the sides and cross supports of the table. This method creates incredibly strong joints that are hidden from view, contributing to the clean aesthetic. Each pocket hole was drilled with precision, ready for assembly.

3. Joining the Sides with Wood Glue and Screws

With the pocket holes drilled, it was time to assemble the main structure. I applied a generous bead of Gorilla Glue Wood Glue to the mating surfaces before clamping the pieces together. Then, I drove the Kreg Jig screws into the pocket holes, creating an incredibly strong and durable bond. This combination of glue and screws ensures the table will withstand the rigors of outdoor use.

Piece by piece, the four sides of the table began to take shape. The process was straightforward, and the satisfaction of seeing the structure emerge was immense.

4. Constructing the Tabletop

The tabletop typically consists of several slats joined together, creating a classic patio furniture look. I carefully attached these slats to the top frame, ensuring even spacing and secure fastening. Once the structure was complete, the raw wood stood ready for its final transformation.

5. Tracing and Cutting the Umbrella Hole

One of the most critical steps for an umbrella side table is creating the opening for the umbrella pole. After purchasing the umbrella I wanted (a fantastic find at Garden Ridge for only $39), I carefully traced a circle around its base onto the exact center of my newly constructed tabletop. Using a jigsaw, I meticulously cut out this circle, ensuring a clean and precise opening that would accommodate the umbrella pole perfectly.

This attention to detail ensures that the umbrella fits snugly and securely, making the table fully functional as a shade provider and a convenient surface.

The Ingenious Umbrella Base: Smart Savings for Stability

Now, here’s a true budget-savvy hack that saved even more money. Even after saving over $250 on the table itself, I couldn’t bring myself to spend extra cash on a bulky, often expensive umbrella stand that would mostly be hidden from view. There had to be a cheaper, equally effective solution. And there was!

My solution involved a cheap flower pot and some Quikrete concrete mix. This method is incredibly simple, highly effective, and ridiculously inexpensive. Here’s how you do it:

  1. Position the Umbrella Base: Take the base of your umbrella pole and position it securely in the center of the chosen flower pot. Ensure it’s straight and stable.
  2. First Layer of Quikrete: Fill the pot with about half a bag of Quikrete concrete mix.
  3. Mix with Water: Following the instructions on the Quikrete bag, slowly add water and mix thoroughly until you achieve a consistent, thick consistency.
  4. Second Layer and Finish: Once the first layer has begun to set slightly, add the rest of the Quikrete mix to the pot, filling it to the desired level. Again, mix with water to achieve the correct consistency.
  5. Cure: Allow the concrete to cure completely according to the manufacturer’s directions. This usually takes 24-48 hours, but check the specific product for details.

This DIY concrete umbrella base provides exceptional stability, preventing your umbrella from toppling over in the wind, all while being completely hidden beneath the table. It’s a testament to how creative problem-solving can lead to both savings and functionality.

Bringing It All Together: The Grand Reveal and Patio Transformation

After all the cutting, gluing, screwing, and concrete mixing, the moment of truth arrived: placing the finished table on the patio. The results were absolutely stunning, exceeding all expectations. The new umbrella side table perfectly complemented my existing lounge chairs, creating a harmonious and inviting outdoor living space.

The sleek design of the table, combined with the vibrant “pop of color” from the umbrella, added a touch of personality and charm to my back patio. It wasn’t just a functional piece; it was a statement of style and a source of immense pride. The umbrella, with its sturdy Quikrete base, provided ample shade, making the patio a comfortable retreat even on the sunniest days.

Seeing the entire setup – the DIY lounge chairs and now the matching umbrella side table – truly brought my vision for an affordable, high-style outdoor living area to life. It’s incredibly satisfying to look at a space knowing that every piece was crafted with care and smart decision-making, resulting in significant savings without compromising on aesthetic appeal or quality. This project is a shining example of how DIY can transform a space and elevate your home without the hefty price tag.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this umbrella stand and table! It is truly the perfect addition to my lounge chairs, and I adore the cheerful pop of color the umbrella brings to my back patio, making it feel like a true extension of my indoor living space.

Personal Touches and Customization: Make It Your Own

One of the greatest advantages of DIY is the freedom to customize your projects to perfectly suit your taste and existing decor. While I opted for a certain finish and umbrella color, your table can reflect your unique style. Consider these options:

  • Stain or Paint: Choose an outdoor-grade stain to enhance the natural beauty of the wood, or paint it a bold color to make a statement. A distressed finish could add a rustic charm, while a smooth, painted surface might lean more contemporary.
  • Umbrella Choice: The umbrella itself offers a huge opportunity for personalization. From vibrant solids to patterned fabrics, choose one that complements your cushions, plants, or simply expresses your personality.
  • Hardware: Although the Kreg Jig creates hidden joints, you could incorporate decorative hardware if you wished, though for this simple design, clean lines are often preferred.

Don’t be afraid to experiment and truly make this project your own. The beauty of handmade furniture lies in its individuality.

Why DIY? More Than Just Savings

While the financial savings are undeniably a huge motivator, the benefits of DIY extend far beyond the dollar signs. Taking on a project like this offers a wealth of intangible rewards:

  • Sense of Accomplishment: There’s an unmatched feeling of pride that comes from looking at a finished piece and knowing you built it with your own hands.
  • Learning New Skills: Each project is an opportunity to learn new woodworking techniques, tool usage, and problem-solving strategies.
  • Customization: You get exactly what you want – the perfect size, finish, and style that off-the-shelf furniture often can’t provide.
  • Quality Control: By selecting your own materials, you can ensure the highest quality and durability for your furniture.
  • Creative Outlet: DIY is a wonderful way to express your creativity and bring your unique vision to life.
  • Connection: Sharing your projects and tips fosters a sense of community among fellow makers.

This umbrella side table project is a prime example of how DIY empowers us to create beautiful, functional, and personalized spaces that truly feel like home, without the prohibitive costs of designer brands.
