Crafting a Custom DIY Wall Sign with Your Glowforge Laser Cutter
Table of Contents
Tools for Your DIY Project:
To successfully complete this large-scale wall sign project, you’ll need the following essential tools:
- Miter Saw: For precise angle cuts on your frame pieces.
- Brad Nailer: To securely assemble your wooden frame with ease.
- Glowforge Pro: The star of our project, essential for its passthrough feature for large materials.
- Table Saw: Used for ripping wider boards into narrower ones and for cutting larger material sheets to size.
Materials You’ll Need:
Gather these materials to bring your custom wall sign to life:
- Eucalyptus Board: This will serve as the main canvas for your engraved lyrics, chosen for its excellent scoring and engraving properties.
- 2 – 1x2x8 Boards (or one 1x4x8 board to rip): For constructing the sturdy and elegant frame.
- Chalkboard material (or another material of choice): For cutting out the distinct heading and ending words, offering a striking contrast.
- Painter’s Tape: Crucial for masking specific materials to prevent scorching during the laser cutting process.
- 1 1/4″ Brad Nails: To fasten the frame components together securely.
- Wood Glue: For a strong, lasting bond on your frame and to attach your cut elements.
- Wood Finish/Stain: To protect and enhance the natural beauty of your wooden frame.
Step-by-Step: Scoring the Lyrics
This is where the Glowforge truly shines, allowing for intricate detail on a grand scale.
Step 1: Designing Your Artwork for Laser Precision

The first step is to bring your textual vision to life digitally. I personally designed my lyric file in Adobe Photoshop, crafting each line to perfectly fit the intended aesthetic. While Photoshop is my preferred tool, the beauty of Glowforge lies in its flexibility; you can utilize any graphic design software that you’re comfortable with. Popular choices include Adobe Illustrator, which is excellent for vector graphics, or even the intuitive Glowforge Design Studio, which comes as part of the Glowforge Premium Membership. For those who prefer a ready-made solution, platforms like Etsy are treasure troves of pre-designed SVG files, many specifically optimized for Glowforge, saving you design time.
Step 2: Preparing Your Material for the Glowforge Pro
For the main sign board, I selected an Eucalyptus board, readily available at Home Depot. This material is not only cost-effective but also renowned for its exceptional ability to engrave and score beautifully, creating crisp, clean lines. I used my table saw to precisely cut the board to the required dimensions.
To accommodate a sign of this impressive size, which measured 48 inches long by 20 inches wide, a Glowforge Pro model is absolutely essential. The Pro model features a unique “passthrough” slot, designed specifically for handling large materials. This innovative feature means there’s virtually no maximum length for your material, while still accommodating a maximum width of 20 inches and a depth of 2 inches. This flexibility is what allows for truly grand-scale projects.
Initially, the idea of using the passthrough slots seemed daunting, but the process is surprisingly simple. To load your extended material, you first need to open these specialized slots. Don’t worry, it’s a straightforward procedure that quickly becomes second nature.

To access the passthrough slots, simply loosen the screws on both the front and back plates of your Glowforge until the plates can be removed. Carefully set these plates aside in a safe place until your project is complete.

Important Note: To reach the screws on the back plate, you’ll need to gently slide the laser tube forward with your hand. Exercise care and move it slowly to avoid any damage.

Once the slots are open, feed your material through the opening at the back of the machine. The Glowforge Design Studio will guide you on when and how to slide the material forward as the laser progresses through your design. After your intricate design is fully scored or cut, simply reattach the front and back plates and secure them with their screws.
Step 3: Loading Your Design File into the Glowforge Design Studio
With my design finalized, I saved it as a PNG file (JPG or PDF are also viable options). Laser cutters typically prefer vector-based files like SVG for optimal precision. Therefore, I used a free online converter to transform my PNG into an SVG file before uploading it to the Glowforge Design Studio.
- You can find a useful SVG conversion website here.

Within the Design Studio, I selected “medium draft board” as my material type and chose the “score” function. Scoring creates a precise outline, tracing the path of each letter, which is ideal for achieving a delicate, elegant look for lyrics. In contrast, “engraving” would fill in the entire letter, a process that can be considerably more time-consuming for large text-heavy designs.

With the passthrough option toggled on, I meticulously sized my file to 18 inches wide and carefully centered it within the digital work area. One of the most invaluable features of the Glowforge is its integrated camera. This camera provides a live preview of your material, allowing you to perfectly position and size your design for an exact fit, eliminating guesswork and wasted materials.
Step 3: Executing the Scoring Process with Precision

Once the design was perfectly positioned, I utilized the “set focus” feature. This critical step ensures that the machine accurately reads the material’s thickness, optimizing the laser’s performance. I make it a habit to perform this action before every print. If, after setting the focus, the sizing or alignment of the file appears to shift slightly, simply resize and recenter it, then run the “set focus” command one more time for absolute precision.
With everything meticulously checked and aligned, I confidently clicked “print.”

Finally, I pressed the physical print button on my Glowforge machine, allowing the advanced technology to take over and execute the detailed scoring.
Important Note on Passthrough Feature: When engaging the passthrough capability on the Glowforge Pro, the machine intelligently processes your design in sequential 12-inch by 20-inch sections. The Design Studio provides clear instructions, guiding you to slide the material forward as each section is completed. While this might sound complex, the Glowforge’s sophisticated camera system captures images after each segment, ensuring flawless alignment of the laser for the subsequent section. In all my projects, this system has proven to be perfectly accurate every single time, making large projects surprisingly simple.

Once the scoring was complete, I gently wiped the Eucalyptus board with a damp cloth to remove any residual dust or slight discoloration from the laser, revealing the crisp, clean lines of the lyrics.
Precision Cutting: Heading and Ending Elements
Adding the distinct heading and ending words brings a polished look to the sign.
Step 1: Crafting the Digital Files for Your Words

Similar to the main lyrics, I designed the heading and ending words in Photoshop. These design files were then converted into SVG files using the same free online converter, ensuring they were ready for precise laser cutting.
Step 2: Preparing the Material for Cutting
For these accent words, I opted for a chalkboard material to achieve a bold, contrasting black finish. However, if you prefer, you can use the same wood material as the main sign and spray paint the cut words afterward to match your desired color scheme.

Because I was working with chalkboard material, I carefully masked its surface with painter’s tape. This masking acts as a protective layer, preventing the laser from scorching or leaving burn marks on the face of the material during the cutting process. If you plan to spray paint your words after cutting, this masking step is unnecessary.
Step 3: Laser Cutting Your Custom Words

I loaded the SVG design file for the heading and ending words into the Glowforge Design Studio. I then selected “medium draft board” as the material setting and applied the specific custom cut settings displayed above for optimal results on the chalkboard material.
Note: Unlike the large lyric board, this material fit entirely within the Glowforge’s standard 12-inch by 20-inch working area. Therefore, there was no need to activate the passthrough feature for this part of the project.
Next, I manually adjusted the title words to be 17.5 inches wide, and then ensured the ending words maintained the same proportional height as the title for a cohesive look.

Following the same meticulous process, I performed the “set focus” step, made any minor adjustments to placement, clicked “print,” and allowed the Glowforge to precisely cut the words with its renowned accuracy.
Assembling Your Custom Frame
A beautiful frame provides the perfect border for your custom sign.
Step 1: Cutting the Boards for Your Frame
To construct the frame, I ingeniously used a single 1x4x8 board and ripped it into two 1x2x8 boards using my table saw. This is a clever cost-saving trick, as purchasing two separate 1x2x8 boards is often more expensive than buying one larger 1x4x8 board and cutting it down. Once ripped, I cut the 1×2 boards to the following precise dimensions to form the frame:
- 2 – 1×2 @ 48″: These will serve as the elegant side pieces of your frame.
- 2 – 1×2 @ 21.5″: These will form the top and bottom sections, providing structural integrity.
- 4 – 1×2 @ 10″: These pieces are cut at a 45° angle on both ends, measured from long point to long point, and will create the decorative corner accents.
Step 2: Assembling the Frame Structure

To assemble the main rectangular frame, I first attached the top and bottom 1×2 pieces to the side 1×2 pieces. I used a generous amount of wood glue on the joining surfaces for a strong bond, then reinforced each joint with 1 1/4-inch brad nails, ensuring a robust and durable structure.

Once the outer frame was securely assembled, I proceeded to attach the pre-cut corner pieces. These were fastened using the same method: applying wood glue to the contact points and then securing them with brad nails, adding an attractive architectural detail to the frame.
Step 3: Applying a Protective and Beautiful Finish

With the frame construction complete, it was time to apply a finish that would both protect the wood and enhance its natural beauty. I applied a single, even coat of wood stain over the entire frame, allowing the grain to show through while providing a rich, desired hue.
- You can find the specific wood stain I used for this project here.
Step 4: Final Assembly: Attaching the Sign to Its Frame

While the stain on the frame was drying, I turned my attention to adhering the heading and ending words to the main Eucalyptus board. I carefully removed the painter’s tape masking from the back of the laser-cut letters, ensuring a clean surface. Then, I applied a strong craft glue to the back of each word and precisely positioned them at the top and bottom sections of the scored lyric sign.
- The reliable craft glue I used for this step can be found here.
Once the stain on the frame was completely dry, I applied wood glue to the inner corner pieces of the frame. I then carefully laid the finished lyric sign board inside the frame, ensuring it was centered and flush. To guarantee a secure bond while the glue set, I placed several heavy items on top of the sign as weights. After allowing ample drying time, the custom wall sign was complete!

And there it was – the perfect, personalized addition to my entryway! This project not only showcases the versatility of the Glowforge but also demonstrates how simple it is to create truly unique and meaningful home decor pieces.

Understanding Glowforge Air Filtration
One critical consideration for any Glowforge owner is how to manage air filtration and ventilation, as laser cutting produces fumes and particles. Currently, I utilize the dedicated Glowforge air filter, which is a self-contained unit that cleans the air recirculated within your workspace. Whitney, on the other hand, recently modified her setup to vent the fumes directly out of a window, which is a common and effective alternative. Each method has its advantages: the Glowforge filter offers portability and keeps your workspace enclosed, while venting through a window is often a more cost-effective long-term solution as it avoids filter replacements. The Glowforge Community remains our go-to resource for information on this topic, as countless makers share their innovative setups and practical tips for efficient and safe laser cutter operation, ensuring you find the best solution for your unique environment.
