Modern Farmhouse DIY Wood Nightstand with a single drawer and open shelf, stained in a rustic brown and white pickling mix, standing beside a bed.

Embarking on a guest room makeover, I realized a crucial element was missing: a stylish yet practical nightstand. Having recently completed the DIY full-size bed frame to convert my son’s former room into a welcoming retreat, the addition of a bedside table became the logical next step. One thoughtfully designed nightstand offered just the right amount of storage and surface area, fitting seamlessly alongside the bed. My vision was clear: a timeless, classic design, subtly echoing the turned legs of the new bed without being overly ornate. This project was about bringing that perfect blend of functionality and aesthetic appeal to life.

What makes this project particularly appealing is its straightforward nature. It’s an ideal build for beginners looking to gain confidence in woodworking, particularly those wanting to master the art of constructing and installing drawers. And the best part? The entire nightstand was built for approximately $75, utilizing readily available lumber and materials. This makes it not only a rewarding DIY endeavor but also an incredibly cost-effective way to enhance your home decor.

Crafting Your Modern Farmhouse Nightstand: An Easy DIY Guide

The allure of a modern farmhouse aesthetic lies in its blend of rustic warmth and clean, contemporary lines. This DIY wood nightstand perfectly embodies that style, offering both practical storage and a charming visual appeal. Designed to be accessible for new woodworkers, this project provides a fantastic opportunity to develop essential skills, including drawer construction and installation. Imagine the satisfaction of building a sturdy, beautiful piece of furniture that enhances your living space and reflects your personal style.

Essential Tools and Materials for Your Nightstand Project

Before diving into the build, ensure you have all the necessary tools and supplies. Having everything ready will streamline your workflow and make the construction process much more enjoyable. This project is designed to be beginner-friendly, requiring a modest set of common woodworking tools.

Tools for Success:

Having the right tools is paramount for a smooth and successful woodworking project. Here’s what you’ll need to bring your DIY nightstand to life:

  • Miter Saw: Indispensable for making accurate cross-cuts and angle cuts, ensuring all your lumber pieces fit together perfectly.
  • Kreg Jig: This tool is a game-changer for creating strong, concealed pocket-hole joints, essential for a clean finish without visible screws. We highly recommend our favorite, the Kreg Jig 720Pro, for its ease of use and versatility.
  • Drill: Crucial for pre-drilling holes and driving screws, ensuring secure connections throughout the build.
  • Brad Nailer: Perfect for quickly securing pieces with brad nails, especially when combined with wood glue for a strong bond, and ideal for attaching the top panel and drawer components.
  • Stapler (optional): A stapler can be used interchangeably with a brad nailer for attaching the drawer bottom, providing a quick and secure fastening method.
  • Sander: Essential for achieving a smooth, professional finish. A good sander will prepare your wood for staining and sealing, ensuring a beautiful result.
  • Table Saw (optional): While not strictly necessary for this build, a table saw can be incredibly useful for ripping wider boards to specific widths or making highly precise cuts, offering more flexibility if you have one available.

Materials List:

Selecting the right materials is just as important as having the correct tools. This list includes all the lumber and hardware you’ll need to construct your DIY nightstand:

  • 1 – 3/4″ x 16″ x 96″ Laminated Pine: This high-quality pine board will form the bulk of your nightstand, including the main frame and drawer components. Laminated pine offers stability and an attractive grain.
  • 1 – 1x6x8 board: Used for specific support pieces and potentially for smaller frame components, chosen for its common dimensions and ease of use.
  • 1 – 2x4x8 board: Provides the sturdy material for the nightstand’s legs and primary base supports, ensuring structural integrity.
  • 1 – 1/4″ x 24″ x 24″ Hardwood Plywood: Ideal for the drawer bottom, offering a lightweight yet durable base for your drawer. MDF can also be an alternative.
  • 1 Set of 2 Drawer Slides: High-quality drawer slides are crucial for smooth, effortless drawer operation. Choose a reputable brand for longevity.
  • 1 1/4″ Pocket Hole Screws: These specialized screws are used with your Kreg Jig to create strong, hidden joints for many parts of the nightstand frame.
  • 2 1/2″ Pocket Hole Screws: Longer pocket hole screws are necessary for joining thicker pieces of lumber, specifically for the base and legs, providing superior strength.
  • 1 1/4″ Wood Screws: Versatile screws for general assembly, particularly when attaching the base to the main frame.
  • 1″ Staples (or brad nails): Used for securing the plywood drawer bottom, offering a quick and firm attachment.
  • 1 Drawer Pull: The aesthetic centerpiece of your drawer. Choose a style that complements your modern farmhouse vision.
  • Stain: To give your nightstand its desired color and bring out the natural beauty of the wood grain.
  • Protective Finish: Essential for sealing and protecting the wood, enhancing its durability and resistance to daily wear and tear.

Constructing the Nightstand Frame: Step-by-Step Guide

The frame forms the core structure of your nightstand, housing the drawer and shelf. Precision in these initial steps will ensure a square and sturdy piece of furniture.

Step 1: Building the Main Frame

Wood pieces cut for the nightstand frame, showing pocket holes drilled on the side pieces.

Begin by cutting the top, bottom, and side pieces of your nightstand frame to their specified sizes. Accuracy here is key, so double-check your measurements against the free plans. Next, drill 3/4″ pocket holes on one side of each of the two side pieces. These pocket holes will allow you to create strong, hidden joints for a clean, professional appearance.

  • Our favorite Kreg Jig model, the 720Pro, can be found here for effortless and precise pocket hole creation.

With your pocket holes drilled, apply a small amount of wood glue to the edges of the bottom board where it will meet the side panels. Then, using 1 1/4″ pocket hole screws, firmly attach the bottom board between the two side panels. Ensure the assembly is square before the glue sets. This critical step forms the base of your drawer compartment, and you’ll immediately see your nightstand taking shape!

Step 2: Integrating the Shelf

Nightstand frame with an internal shelf being installed using pocket hole screws.

Now, cut your shelf board to the appropriate size according to your plans. Drill 3/4″ pocket holes at both ends of this shelf board. This shelf will sit below the drawer, providing an open storage space perfect for books, decorative items, or other bedside essentials. Position the shelf exactly where you want it inside the frame, making sure it’s level and centered. Apply wood glue to the meeting surfaces and secure it firmly with 1 1/4″ pocket hole screws. This addition not only adds functionality but also contributes to the overall stability and aesthetic balance of your DIY wood nightstand.

Step 3: Securing the Top Panel

Top panel being attached to the nightstand frame using brad nails and wood glue.

The final component of your main frame assembly is the top panel. Carefully align the top piece with the edges of your assembled frame. Apply wood glue to the top edges of the side panels and the drawer divider, then use 1 1/4″ brad nails to securely attach the top. Brad nails offer a clean fastening solution, leaving minimal holes to fill later. This step completes the primary structure, and you’ll notice how the piece instantly transforms, beginning to resemble a high-end furniture store find!

Building a Sturdy Base for Enduring Stability

The base provides the foundational support and aesthetic elevation for your nightstand. It’s where the character of the modern farmhouse style really starts to shine, especially with well-crafted legs.

Step 4: Crafting the Legs and Bottom Support

Nightstand legs and bottom support pieces cut and ready for assembly, with pocket holes drilled.

Cut all four nightstand legs and the bottom support pieces to their exact dimensions as specified in the plans. For the support pieces, drill 1 1/2″ pocket holes at both ends. These deeper pocket holes are ideal for joining thicker lumber like the 2x4s used for the legs, providing exceptional strength and stability.

Nightstand legs with bottom support pieces attached using pocket hole screws and wood glue.

Apply wood glue to the ends of the support pieces and attach them to each leg using 2 1/2″ pocket hole screws. Ensure these connections are tight and secure, as they form the primary load-bearing structure of your nightstand. Once assembled, you’ll have a robust and stable foundation ready to support the main frame.

Step 5: Adding Top Supports

Top support pieces for the nightstand base being attached to the legs with pocket hole screws.

Next, cut the top support pieces to size and drill 3/4″ pocket holes at each end. These shorter supports are crucial for securely connecting the top of the leg assembly to the main nightstand frame. Apply wood glue to the ends and attach them to the legs using 1 1/4″ pocket hole screws. These supports not only add structural integrity but also ensure a seamless transition and strong bond between the base and the upper nightstand structure.

Assembling Your DIY Nightstand: Bringing It All Together

With the main frame and base components completed, it’s time to unite them into a single, cohesive piece of furniture. This step requires careful alignment to ensure a perfectly level and stable nightstand.

Step 6: Connecting the Frame and Base

Drawer frame being flipped upside down and aligned with the base for final assembly.

Carefully flip the main drawer frame upside down. Position the assembled base precisely underneath it, aligning all edges and ensuring it’s perfectly centered. Apply a generous amount of wood glue to the top surfaces of the base supports where they will meet the bottom of the main frame. Then, using 1 1/4″ wood screws, firmly attach the base to the bottom of the frame. This connection is vital for the overall stability and longevity of your nightstand. Once secured, your DIY wood nightstand will stand proudly, a testament to your craftsmanship!

Building and Installing the Drawer: A Beginner-Friendly Approach

Many DIYers find building and installing drawers intimidating, but this project breaks it down into simple, manageable steps. You’ll be amazed at how easily you can create a perfectly functional drawer for your nightstand.

Step 7: Drawer Box Assembly

Drawer box pieces being assembled with brad nails and wood glue.

First, cut all the pieces for your drawer box to the exact dimensions specified in your plans. Apply wood glue to the mating edges of the drawer sides, front, and back, then attach them together using 1 1/4″ brad nails. This creates a strong, rectangular box that will form the body of your drawer.

Plywood bottom being attached to the assembled drawer frame with staples and wood glue.

Next, measure and cut your 1/4″ plywood (or MDF) piece to fit snugly into the bottom of the assembled drawer frame. Apply wood glue around the bottom edges of the drawer box, then carefully position the plywood bottom. Secure it in place with 1″ staples. If you don’t have a stapler, 1″ brad nails will also work effectively. This creates a sturdy base for your drawer, ready to hold all your bedside essentials.

Step 8: Seamless Drawer Slide Installation

Proper drawer slide installation is crucial for smooth and quiet drawer operation. Take your time with this step for the best results.

Outside half of a drawer slide being installed inside the nightstand cabinet, resting on a 1/4 inch scrap wood spacer.

Begin by installing the outside half of the drawer slides to the inside walls of the nightstand cabinet. Always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific drawer slides, as installation methods can vary slightly. A valuable trick is to use a 1/4″ scrap piece of wood to rest the drawer slide on, ensuring a consistent height and perfect alignment within the cabinet. Secure these slides with the screws provided, typically short wood screws.

  • You can find the specific drawer slides I used for this project here, known for their smooth performance.
Inside part of the drawer slide being attached to the side of the drawer box, using the plywood bottom as a placement guide.

Once the cabinet slides are in place, attach the corresponding inside part of each drawer slide to the sides of your assembled drawer box. I found it helpful to use the bottom 1/4″ plywood of the drawer as a visual marker for consistent placement. Ensure both sides are aligned and the drawer slides move freely before permanently securing them with screws. Test the drawer frequently during this process to confirm smooth operation.

Step 9: Attaching the Drawer Front

Drawer front being aligned and attached to the drawer box, demonstrating the use of a Kreg Drawer Front Mounting Jig.

The drawer front is the face of your drawer and significantly impacts the overall look of your nightstand. Carefully measure and cut your drawer face to ensure it fits evenly and symmetrically within the opening of the nightstand frame, leaving a small, consistent gap on all sides. For attaching the drawer face, a Kreg Drawer Front Mounting Jig is an absolute game-changer. This tool acts like an extra set of hands, allowing for perfect alignment and easy installation.

If you don’t have the jig, you can use double-sided tape or clamps to temporarily hold the drawer face in place while you secure it from the inside of the drawer box. Apply wood glue to the back of the drawer face where it will contact the drawer box, then attach it from the inside using 1 1/4″ brad nails or wood screws (1 1/4″ pocket hole screws also work well for a strong bond). Make sure your fasteners are not too long to pierce through the front of the drawer face.

The Perfect Finish for Your Nightstand: Adding Enduring Beauty

The finishing touches are what truly elevate your DIY nightstand from raw wood to a polished piece of furniture. This section focuses on preparing the wood, applying stain, and protecting your hard work.

Step 10: Filling Imperfections with Wood Filler

Applying wood filler to nail holes and imperfections on the assembled nightstand.

Before any staining or sealing, take the time to meticulously fill any visible nail holes, screw holes, or minor imperfections with wood filler. Apply a small amount, pressing it firmly into the holes, and then scrape away any excess with a putty knife. Allow the filler to dry completely according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This step is crucial for achieving a smooth, professional-looking surface that will beautifully accept your chosen finish.

  • Find the high-quality wood filler we use for seamless repairs here.

Step 11: Achieving Smoothness Through Sanding

Sanding the DIY wood nightstand with a circular sander to achieve a smooth finish.

Sanding is a vital step that transforms rough wood into a silky-smooth surface, perfect for finishing. Start by sanding the entire DIY wood nightstand with 80-grit sandpaper. This coarse grit effectively removes any rough spots, mill marks, or leftover glue. Follow this with 120-grit sandpaper to refine the surface and remove the scratches left by the 80-grit. Finally, finish with 220-grit sandpaper for a beautifully smooth, ready-to-stain surface. I highly recommend using a circular sander for efficiency, but hand sanding or an orbital sander will also yield excellent results. Always sand with the grain of the wood for the best appearance.

Step 12: Applying the Wood Stain for Character

Mixing Rustic Brown and White Pickling stains in a 1:1 ratio for a custom finish.

Choosing the right stain can drastically change the character of your piece. For a soft, timeless modern farmhouse look, I opted for a custom blend of Rustic Brown and White Pickling stain, mixed in a 1:1 ratio. This combination creates a beautiful, subtle finish that highlights the wood grain without overpowering it. Always test your stain mix on a scrap piece of the same wood to ensure you achieve your desired color.

  • You can find the rich rustic brown stain used here.
  • And the complementary white wash pickling stain is available here.

Applying an even coat of custom mixed wood stain to the nightstand.

Apply one even coat of your custom stain mix to the entire nightstand using a brush or a clean cloth. Work in sections, applying the stain liberally, and then promptly wiping away any excess with a clean, lint-free rag. This ensures an even absorption and prevents blotchiness. Allow the stain to dry completely according to the product’s instructions before proceeding to the next step.

Step 13: Sealing for Durability and Longevity

Applying Triple Thick protective finish to the stained DIY nightstand.

Protecting your meticulously stained wood is essential for its longevity and resistance to daily wear and tear. I chose to seal the wood with two coats of Triple Thick polyurethane in a satin finish. This product offers excellent durability and a beautiful, subtle sheen that enhances the natural beauty of the wood without making it overly glossy. Apply the first coat evenly, allowing it to dry completely as per instructions. Lightly sand with a very fine-grit sandpaper (220-320 grit) between coats for optimal adhesion and smoothness, then wipe away any dust before applying the second coat. This protective layer will ensure your nightstand remains beautiful for years to come.

  • Ensure lasting protection for your nightstand with Triple Thick polyurethane, available here.

Step 14: Adding the Final Hardware Touch

Using the Kreg KHI-XLPULL Cabinet Hardware Jig Pro to precisely drill holes for the drawer pull.

The hardware is the jewelry of your furniture, adding a final touch of personality and functionality. For perfectly aligned drawer pulls, I highly recommend the new Kreg KHI-XLPULL Cabinet Hardware Jig Pro. This innovative tool makes drilling holes for handles and pulls incredibly precise and simple, eliminating guesswork and potential mistakes.
