Materials and Tools You’ll Need for Your Farmhouse Table

Before you begin, gathering all your materials and tools is crucial for a smooth and efficient build. For this project, you’ll primarily need 8 common lumber boards, which contributes significantly to its affordability. In terms of adhesives, a high-quality wood glue is essential for reinforcing joints and ensuring the table’s longevity. You’ll also need 2 1/2″ pocket hole screws and 2″ finish nails to secure various components.

On the tool side, a reliable table saw (we used our Ridgid table saw) is vital for accurate board ripping. A Kreg Jig will be your best friend for creating strong, concealed pocket hole joints. Other necessary tools include a power drill, a tape measure, a pencil, a square, and a 16-gauge (or 18-gauge brad) finish nailer. Always prioritize safety: wear appropriate eye protection and hearing protection when operating power tools.

Step 1: Preparing Your Lumber for a Flawless Finish

The foundation of any great woodworking project lies in its preparation. To achieve the clean, crisp lines characteristic of a high-quality farmhouse table, we began by using our table saw to rip off the rounded edges of all the lumber boards. This step is not just about aesthetics; it ensures that your planks fit together seamlessly, creating a more professional and durable finish. Refer to our detailed plans for the exact width measurements to rip your boards down to, ensuring consistency across your project.

Step 2: Mastering Pocket Holes with Your Kreg Jig

Once your boards are perfectly sized, it’s time to introduce the magic of the Kreg Jig. This incredible tool simplifies the process of creating strong, hidden joints, making it ideal for both beginners and seasoned woodworkers. Using our Kreg Jig, we drilled 2 1/2″ pocket holes into all the necessary boards. The precision of pocket holes ensures maximum strength and a clean appearance for your finished table. Our plans provide precise guidance on pocket hole placement, so make sure to consult them carefully. If you’re looking to invest in this game-changing tool, you can find our favorite Kreg Jig model HERE on Amazon!

Step 3: Assembling the Sturdy Table Top

Planking the table top for DIY farmhouse project

With your boards prepped and pocket holes drilled, the first exciting step in assembly is planking the tabletop. This is where your table truly starts to take shape! We carefully aligned each plank, ensuring tight joints to create a smooth and continuous surface. To secure the planks together, we used 2 1/2″ pocket hole screws, driving them firmly into place. The combination of strong wood and these robust screws ensures your tabletop will withstand years of use, whether it’s hosting family dinners or displaying merchandise.

Step 4: Constructing the Elegant Leg Bases

Assembling leg bases for farmhouse table

Next, we moved on to assembling the side leg bases, which provide the structural integrity and signature look of the pew bench style. This stage requires careful alignment and secure fastening. We generously applied wood glue to all mating surfaces before joining the pieces. This adds an incredible amount of strength to the joints, preventing any wobbling or loosening over time. Following the glue, we reinforced each connection with 2 1/2″ pocket hole screws, creating a solid and stable foundation for your table.

Step 5: Adding Decorative and Structural Trim

Applying wood glue to trim pieces

The trim pieces are crucial for both the aesthetic appeal and the structural reinforcement of the leg bases. First, cut your trim pieces precisely according to the measurements in our plans. Then, apply a generous amount of wood glue to the inside of each piece before attaching them. We highly recommend using a specialized glue bottle for this, as it allows for precise application and minimizes mess – we LOVE this glue bottle and you can find it HERE on Amazon! Once the glue is applied, firmly attach the trim pieces to the leg bases using 2 1/2″ pocket hole screws. This creates a robust and beautifully detailed leg structure.

This method ensures the trim is not only decorative but also integral to the overall stability of the leg bases. Double-check that all screws are driven in flush for a smooth finish.

Step 6: Securing the Bases to the Feet

Connecting leg bases to feet for stability

With the leg bases now fully assembled, it’s time to connect them to the feet. This step solidifies the table’s stance and ensures it will be perfectly level and incredibly sturdy. Apply wood glue to the joining surfaces, then position the bases onto the feet. Secure these crucial connections with 2 1/2″ pocket hole screws, driving them through the bases and into the feet. The combination of glue and screws creates an exceptionally strong bond, ensuring your table remains steadfast for years to come.

Step 7: Integrating the Apron Pieces for Structural Integrity

Attaching apron pieces to table bases

The apron pieces are vital for connecting the leg bases and providing robust support for the tabletop. Attach these pieces to the assembled bases using 2 1/2″ pocket hole screws and wood glue. A crucial tip here: ensure that the pocket holes are facing inside the table and upward. This strategic placement allows you to easily attach the planked tabletop later, with the screws being hidden from view on the exterior, maintaining the table’s clean aesthetic.

Step 8: Centering and Attaching the Runner

Centering and attaching the runner of the table

The runner not only adds to the aesthetic appeal but also provides additional stability to the table’s base structure. Carefully center the runner between the leg bases, ensuring it is perfectly aligned. Once positioned, attach it securely to the base using 2 1/2″ pocket hole screws and wood glue. This connection helps to prevent any racking or swaying, making your table incredibly robust and ready for daily use.

Step 9: Connecting the Base to the Table Top

Assembling the table base and top

Now for a truly satisfying moment: bringing the base and tabletop together! With the base fully assembled and standing sturdy, carefully place the planked tabletop on top. Ensure it’s centered and aligned perfectly with the apron. Then, from underneath the table, drive 2 1/2″ pocket hole screws through the pocket holes in the apron pieces and into the underside of the tabletop. This creates a secure, strong, and invisible connection, firmly marrying the top to its elegant base.

Step 10: The Finishing Touches: Faux End Pieces

Attaching faux end pieces for a finished look

The final step in assembly adds a refined, built-in look to your table. These “faux end pieces” effectively cap off the runners, giving the table a polished and complete appearance. Apply wood glue to the back of each faux end piece, then carefully position them on the outside of the bases, aligning them with the runners. Secure them using 2″ finish nails with your 16-gauge finish nailer. If you don’t have a 16-gauge nailer, an 18-gauge brad nailer will also work perfectly for this step, ensuring a clean and almost invisible attachment.

Bringing Your Vision to Life: The Perfect Finish

Once the construction is complete, the finish is where your DIY Pew Bench Farmhouse Table truly comes to life, allowing you to customize its appearance to perfectly match your home decor. The right paint and stain can transform simple lumber into a stunning focal point, enhancing its rustic charm and timeless appeal.

Choosing Your Paint and Stain

For our table, we opted for a classic farmhouse aesthetic: a crisp, flat white paint for the base. This choice brightens the space, provides a beautiful contrast, and highlights the unique bench-style legs. The flat finish adds a subtle, chalky texture that perfectly complements the rustic vibe. You can find the flat white paint we used HERE on Amazon.

For the tabletop, we chose a warm Honey Maple Stain. This rich, natural wood tone brings out the grain of the lumber, adding depth and authenticity to the farmhouse look. The stain also provides a durable layer of protection, making the tabletop resilient to daily wear and tear. You can find our preferred Honey Maple Stain HERE on Amazon. Feel free to experiment with different paint colors and stain shades to create a table that uniquely reflects your personal style!
