Hey fellow DIY enthusiasts and home decor lovers!
I am absolutely thrilled to share the detailed journey and stunning outcome of our latest project: a DIY Modern Farmhouse Media Console Table! This isn’t just any piece of furniture; it’s a testament to combining beautiful aesthetics with practical functionality. We recently had the incredible opportunity to renovate the Berry family’s home for HGTV’s Open Concept series. A significant challenge they faced was limited storage space – a common problem for many families – particularly for their children’s toys and, of course, their essential TV equipment. Our goal was to craft a bespoke furniture piece that would elegantly solve both these issues, providing ample storage while seamlessly blending into their modern farmhouse aesthetic. And that’s precisely what we achieved with this design!
Crafting Your Own Modern Farmhouse Media Console Table
From the moment this DIY console table was completed, I fell in love with every single detail. The custom hardware we selected perfectly complements the overall design, adding a touch of vintage charm that truly makes the piece pop. The streamlined, yet rustic, design elements speak volumes to the modern farmhouse style, and that specific paint color? Absolute perfection! It strikes the ideal balance between sophistication and coziness, making this console a versatile addition to any living space looking for a stylish storage solution.

Having a clear understanding of the dimensions is crucial for planning your space and cuts. Here are the overall dimensions for this robust and stylish media console, designed to accommodate various media components and storage needs while maintaining a sleek profile:
Building the Foundation with PureBond Plywood: The Heart of Your Media Console
The very first and arguably most critical step in constructing this stunning modern farmhouse media console is assembling the core “box” structure. This forms the essential framework that everything else will build upon, so precision here is key. The vast majority of this durable and beautiful table is constructed using high-quality PureBond hardwood plywood in Birch, which we sourced from Home Depot. PureBond plywood is an exceptional choice for DIY furniture projects due to its strength, stability, and eco-friendly manufacturing process (formaldehyde-free!), making it a safe and sustainable material for your home.
We typically take advantage of Home Depot’s convenient cutting services, having their team rip down the larger plywood sheets into more manageable sections. This saves time and ensures straight, accurate initial cuts. Once we bring these larger pieces home, we then make all the precise, smaller cuts needed for the individual components of the console. To firmly assemble the foundational box, we utilized 3/4-inch pocket holes paired with 1.25-inch pocket hole screws. This technique, made incredibly easy and efficient with our trusty Kreg K5 Jig, creates incredibly strong and hidden joints, essential for a professional-looking finish.
For those new to woodworking, people often ask which Kreg Jig model is best to start with. Our answer is always the K5. This is by far our FAVORITE model and is incredibly versatile, capable of tackling projects ranging from small, intricate pieces to large-scale furniture builds like this media console. We’ve relied on the same Kreg K5 model for years, and it has never let us down. Investing in this jig is a decision you certainly won’t regret, as it opens up a world of possibilities for your DIY woodworking adventures!
Once the main outer box of the console begins to take shape, the next crucial step is to integrate the interior shelving. These shelves are vital for the console’s functionality, providing designated spaces for media devices, books, decorative items, or even those pesky kids’ toys we mentioned earlier. Carefully line up both the middle shelf and the base shelf within the main box structure. For maximum stability and longevity, we recommend applying a generous bead of wood glue along the edges where the shelves meet the console sides and then securing them firmly with 1.25-inch pocket hole screws. This combination of glue and screws creates a joint that is virtually indestructible, ensuring your console remains sturdy for years to come.
A quick shout-out to our fantastic team, Andrew and Stephen, who always lend a skilled hand and good cheer to our projects!
As you assemble, pay close attention to the alignment of the shelves. You can clearly see in the image here how that bottom shelf is perfectly lined up, running seamlessly from the base of the side panels to the central dividing pieces. This careful alignment is not just for aesthetics; it ensures structural integrity and that the interior compartments are evenly spaced and functional. Take your time during this step, as proper shelf placement is essential for the overall success and look of your console.
With the internal shelving securely in place, the next stage involves constructing and attaching the front face frame of the table. This face frame isn’t just a decorative element; it adds significant structural rigidity to the console, conceals the plywood edges, and provides a finished, polished look. It also serves as the anchoring point for the future cabinet doors. This crucial component is expertly built using standard 1x boards, which are readily available and easy to work with. Assemble the individual pieces of the face frame using both wood glue and 1.25-inch pocket hole screws for a durable and seamless connection. This separate assembly allows you to ensure perfect alignment and squareness before attaching it to the main console box.
Now, it’s time to marry the front face frame with the main box of the table. This step is where your console truly starts to take on its intended form. Carefully align the face frame onto the front of the assembled plywood box, ensuring that all edges are flush and corners are square. Once again, use a combination of strong wood glue for a permanent bond and 1.25-inch pocket hole screws, driven from the inside of the console box into the back of the face frame, to securely attach it. This method ensures that all fastening hardware is hidden from view, contributing to the clean and professional aesthetic of your modern farmhouse piece.
Once the face frame is firmly attached, take a moment to inspect the joints and overall alignment. This is what the top of the corner should look like – a clean, tight fit where the face frame meets the console’s top panel. You might notice that the top sides of the console will show the exposed edges of the hardwood plywood. While some prefer the layered look of plywood, for a truly smooth and finished appearance, especially when painting, we highly recommend filling these exposed edges with wood putty. After the putty has thoroughly dried, sand it down meticulously until it’s perfectly smooth and flush with the surrounding surface. This extra step is essential for achieving that high-quality, seamless finish that defines professional furniture pieces.
With the core structure and face frame complete, it’s time to address the back of the console. This vital component is crafted from 1/4-inch hardwood plywood, precisely cut to fit snugly behind the cabinet portion. A thoughtful design feature we incorporated for this media console is leaving the top portion of the back panel open. This strategic opening is incredibly practical, allowing for easy routing and management of power cords, HDMI cables, and other media equipment wiring. This prevents a tangled mess of wires and keeps your entertainment area looking neat and organized. To secure the back panel, we used 1-inch staples, applied judiciously around the perimeter, ensuring it is firmly attached but easy to remove if future access is needed for extensive cable rerouting.
The final structural step that truly transforms this console into a complete, functional storage unit is the addition of the cabinet doors. These doors are integral to achieving the modern farmhouse aesthetic and are surprisingly simple to construct, yet they add immense character and utility. Each door is created using a main panel cut to size, which is then elegantly trimmed with smaller wood pieces. This layering technique gives the doors a recessed panel look, providing a custom, high-end feel that aligns perfectly with modern design trends while retaining a classic farmhouse charm. We used 1/2-inch brad nails and wood glue to securely attach the trim pieces to the door panels. The brad nails offer immediate holding power while the glue sets, resulting in a strong and virtually seamless join that won’t detract from the finished look.
Once the construction of the entire console was finished, including all the meticulous detail work on the doors, we moved onto the crucial finishing phase. First, we went over every surface, carefully filling all nail holes and any minor imperfections with wood putty. This step, followed by thorough sanding, is absolutely vital for achieving a smooth, flawless surface that will beautifully accept paint. After the surface was prepped to perfection, I applied my absolute favorite paint color: Urbane Bronze by Sherwin-Williams. I am completely obsessed with this sophisticated, deep gray-brown shade; it perfectly encapsulates the warmth and modernity of the farmhouse style and adds incredible depth to the piece. It’s a color that effortlessly elevates any room it’s in!
After the paint had fully dried and cured, the exciting part began: adding the hardware. I knew that the right hardware could truly make this piece pop and define its character, so I sought out something special. I discovered an incredible company online called House of Antique Hardware, which specializes in offering unique and antique-style hardware. I fell completely in love with their selection, which provided the perfect blend of vintage charm and modern sensibility for our console. I highly recommend checking them out – you’ll find it hard not to adore everything they offer!
For the cabinet doors, I chose these exquisite surface-mounted hinges, crafted from forged iron, which perfectly complement the rustic yet refined aesthetic of the console. These are the hinges I used, adding an authentic touch of craftsmanship to the piece.
To complete the look, I selected these elegant Mission-style vertical cabinet pulls. Their clean lines and robust design perfectly echo the modern farmhouse aesthetic, providing both functionality and a striking visual element. These are the pulls that adorn the cabinet doors, bringing a cohesive and sophisticated finish to the entire piece.
And that, my friends, truly sums up the exciting journey of creating this DIY Modern Farmhouse Media Console Table! From concept to the final coat of paint and hardware, this project was a labor of love, designed to bring both beauty and practical functionality into the Berry’s home.
I sincerely hope you love this custom-built piece as much as we did the moment we saw it settled perfectly in their living room. Truth be told, there was a fleeting moment when I almost wanted to keep it for myself – it’s that good! This console isn’t just a place for a TV; it’s a stylish hub for entertainment, a clever storage solution for all those bits and bobs, and a beautiful accent piece that enhances the overall decor.
