That’s why I feel comfortable calling them “Whit” and “Ash” – our bond is truly special, forged through shared passions and countless creative adventures.
Cherished Connections: The Blogging Community & Conference Memories
Just last week, I had the pleasure of spending quality time with the Shanty Sisters in scenic Utah at the SNAP conference. These events are more than just learning experiences; they are vibrant hubs where friendships deepen, and creative sparks ignite. I remember one Friday night in particular, a group of us stayed up late, sharing stories, laughter, and perhaps a few more personal details than we initially intended. Let’s just say I uncovered some hilariously unexpected tidbits about Whit and Ash, and I’m quite sure they learned a few things about me they might not have anticipated either! #mactruck. But amidst all the revelations, there was an abundance of laughter – that pure, infectious kind that leaves your face hurting from smiling so much. That’s the kind of joy and connection that truly fuels this blogging community, and it’s something I cherish deeply.
Beyond the personal anecdotes and shared giggles, these conferences are instrumental in building a supportive network of like-minded individuals. They provide a unique platform for collaboration, idea exchange, and encouragement, which is precisely why I’m so honored to contribute to their space today. These moments of connection aren’t just fun; they’re essential for growth, inspiration, and for bringing you all even better content.
Unveiling the Dream Project: My New Craft Closet Makeover
Since the girls are traversing different time zones for the next couple of weeks, they asked me to share a project that embodies the spirit of DIY and transformation. I immediately thought of a recent project I completed in my own home, one that has brought me immense satisfaction and organization – my brand new craft closet! I’m incredibly excited to walk you through this journey from chaos to creativity, proving that even the smallest spaces can be reimagined with a little vision and elbow grease.
The concept of a dedicated craft space, no matter how compact, is a game-changer for any creative individual. It’s more than just storage; it’s about creating an environment that fosters inspiration, minimizes distractions, and allows for seamless workflow. This project wasn’t just about tidying up; it was about reclaiming a corner of my home and turning it into a functional, beautiful sanctuary for all my creative endeavors.
The Chaotic “Before”: A Vision for Transformation
To truly appreciate the “after,” we must first acknowledge the “before.” This particular closet, situated within an 11×11 room I’m actively transforming into my home office, had become nothing short of a dumping ground. It was a chaotic collection of miscellaneous items, overflowing with supplies, tools, and things that simply didn’t have a designated home. The mere thought of searching for anything in that space was enough to induce a sigh of frustration. This visual snapshot truly captures the disarray, setting the perfect stage for the dramatic transformation that was about to unfold.
My vision for this home office, and specifically this closet, was clear: to create an oasis of order and efficiency. I knew that by tackling the closet first, I would establish a strong foundation for the rest of the room’s renovation. It was time to say goodbye to the clutter and welcome a space that truly served its purpose – to inspire creativity rather than stifle it.
Step-by-Step Transformation: From Clutter to Craft Haven
Phase 1: Demolition & Opening Up the Space
The journey began, as many great DIY projects do, with a thorough clear-out of everything within the closet. This initial step, though often daunting, is crucial for gaining perspective and preparing the canvas. Once empty, the next significant task was removing the header above the closet opening. My wonderful partner, Cy, lent his strength and expertise to this part of the project. The goal here was twofold: to make the top shelf more easily accessible and to fundamentally alter the perception of the space. I wanted it to feel less like a cramped, traditional closet and more like an integrated, open alcove within the office. Removing that header instantly expanded the visual appeal and practicality of the area, a pivotal moment in the makeover.
This deliberate choice to open up the entrance was not merely aesthetic; it was about enhancing functionality. By removing the restrictive header, the closet seamlessly blends with the room, making it feel larger and more inviting. It also allows for easier maneuvering of craft supplies and provides an unobstructed view of all the organized treasures within. The structural change was a foundational step towards achieving the airy, accessible craft space I envisioned.
The removal process itself involved careful demolition, ensuring the surrounding drywall remained intact. It’s a task that requires patience and precision, often revealing unexpected challenges, but the end result of a more open, inviting space is always worth the effort. Seeing the space transform from a dark, enclosed box into a brighter, more integrated part of the room was incredibly motivating.
Phase 2: Foundation & Fresh Beginnings
With the header gone, our attention turned to the flooring. Knowing that we eventually planned to remove all the old carpet from the entire 11×11 room, we made the practical decision to go ahead and tackle the closet’s carpet before installing any new shelving. This approach ensures a clean, level surface for the new built-ins and avoids awkward cuts or future hassle. My youngest, Eli, was a fantastic helper with the cleanup, making quick work of the discarded carpet and debris. This step, while less glamorous than painting or decorating, is crucial for the longevity and stability of any built-in features.
Removing the carpet also allowed us to assess the subfloor, ensuring there were no underlying issues that could affect the structure of our new shelving system. It’s these often-overlooked preparatory steps that make a significant difference in the final quality and durability of a renovation project. We planned for the future, knowing that whatever flooring we eventually chose for the office would seamlessly flow into the closet space.
Phase 3: A Fresh Coat of Paint & Bright Horizons
Next on the agenda was painting. I opted to paint the interior of the closet the exact same color as the rest of the room: “Natural Choice” by Sherwin Williams. This consistent color scheme creates a cohesive flow and enhances the feeling of an integrated space rather than a separate, closed-off closet. While it’s a Sherwin Williams color, I always have it color-matched at Lowe’s and use Valspar paint for its quality and ease of application. The light, neutral shade instantly brightened the interior, making it feel clean, fresh, and much larger. It’s amazing how a fresh coat of paint can instantly uplift a space and set the tone for its new purpose.
The choice of “Natural Choice” was intentional, aiming for a serene and bright backdrop that wouldn’t compete with the colorful craft supplies it would soon house. Light colors are particularly effective in smaller spaces, reflecting light and creating an illusion of openness. This foundational layer of paint was essential in transforming the closet from a dingy storage area into a luminous canvas for creativity.
Phase 4: Strategic Storage & Thoughtful Design Choices
With the structural work complete and the paint drying, it was time for the exciting part: bringing in the organizational elements. We made a trip to Lowe’s, where we sourced the essential components for our new storage system, including sturdy shelving, versatile pegboard, and decorative corbels. These materials were carefully chosen for both their functionality and their ability to contribute to the desired aesthetic. Additionally, I found some fantastic organizing supplies at IKEA, which are always a go-to for clever and budget-friendly storage solutions. The combination of custom-built shelves and modular organizers allowed for maximum storage efficiency tailored to my specific crafting needs.
The design philosophy behind these choices was to create a highly functional yet aesthetically pleasing space. The pegboard offers incredible flexibility for hanging tools and frequently used items, keeping them within easy reach. The shelving provides ample surface area for bins, boxes, and project materials, while the corbels add a touch of architectural detail, elevating the look beyond mere utility. Each item was selected with purpose, ensuring that every inch of the closet would be optimized for organization and visual appeal.
The “After”: A Radiant & Functional Crafting Sanctuary
And now, the moment of truth! I absolutely adore how bright, cheerful, and incredibly functional this space is now! It’s a complete departure from its former chaotic state, radiating an inviting energy that makes me eager to dive into my next creative project. Every tool has its place, every supply is neatly categorized, and the entire area feels expansive and inspiring.
One of my favorite additions, which truly elevates the charm and ambiance of the closet, is the new Edison light fixture we hung. Its vintage-inspired glow adds a touch of warmth and character, making the space feel cozy and inviting even on the busiest crafting days. The soft, ambient lighting not only serves a practical purpose but also contributes significantly to the overall aesthetic, turning a utilitarian space into a design feature.
This organized haven isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about efficiency and peace of mind. Knowing exactly where everything is saves valuable time and eliminates the frustration that often accompanies disorganized spaces. It allows creativity to flow freely, unhindered by the search for a specific tool or material. This craft closet is truly a testament to the power of thoughtful design and dedicated DIY effort.
