There’s an undeniable joy that comes from crafting something beautiful and functional with your own hands. Today, I’m thrilled to unveil my latest woodworking triumph – a stunning DIY Turned Leg Buffet Table that has completely transformed my dining room. This isn’t just another piece of furniture; it’s a statement, a testament to the power of DIY, and a testament to the beauty of classic design.

Introducing the magnificent 6-foot Turned Leg Buffet Table, now the proud centerpiece of my dining space. Its generous dimensions offer a wealth of storage, making it as practical as it is aesthetically pleasing. Despite its substantial size, I promise you, this was an incredibly rewarding and surprisingly straightforward build. The true stars of this project are undoubtedly the exquisite turned legs, sourced from the renowned Osborne Wood Products. Their intricate detailing provides a timeless elegance that elevates the entire piece. For this project, I opted for four beautiful knotty pine legs, which add character and a touch of rustic charm.

Why a DIY Turned Leg Buffet Table?

The decision to build a buffet table for my dining room was driven by a desire for both beauty and utility. A buffet, also known as a side cabinet or console, serves multiple purposes: it offers essential storage for linens, dinnerware, and entertaining essentials, provides a spacious surface for serving food, and acts as a decorative anchor in the room. Opting for a DIY approach allowed for complete customization in terms of size, style, and finish, ensuring it perfectly complements my existing decor while also being a significantly more cost-effective alternative to purchasing a similar high-quality piece. The turned legs, in particular, imbue this buffet with a sophisticated, custom-built look that store-bought furniture often lacks.

The total investment for this impressive 6-foot buffet table came in at approximately $350. Considering the substantial size, robust construction, and bespoke design, this represents incredible value. Plus, I even had some scrap wood leftover, ready to be repurposed for future exciting projects!

Building the Foundation: Legs, Frame, and Back Panel

Every sturdy piece of furniture begins with a solid foundation. For this DIY turned leg buffet table, I began by preparing the magnificent turned legs. The initial step involved precisely gluing two leg sections together using Gorilla Wood Glue. This heavy-duty wood glue provides an incredibly strong bond, ensuring the legs will withstand the test of time and provide unwavering support for the entire structure. Precision in this step is crucial for the overall stability and aesthetic appeal of the buffet.

While the glue on the legs was curing, I moved on to constructing the essential back panel. This component not only adds structural rigidity to the buffet but also provides a finished look. For the back panel, I chose Purebond Plywood in a beautiful birch finish. Purebond plywood is an excellent choice for DIY furniture projects due to its superior strength, stability, and formaldehyde-free composition, making it ideal for indoor air quality. Its smooth surface also makes it easy to paint or stain, providing a professional finish. Attaching the back panel securely to the assembled back legs is vital for the integrity of the piece, creating a robust framework for the rest of the buffet.

Crafting the Interior: Shelves and Structural Supports

With the primary frame taking shape, the next phase involved preparing and integrating the interior shelving, which is crucial for the buffet’s generous storage capacity. Using my reliable Ryobi 18V Jig Saw, I carefully cut precise notches into the shelf panels. These notches are essential for fitting the shelves neatly around the internal supports or legs, ensuring a seamless and sturdy fit. For the shelves, I opted for an additional sheet of 3/4-inch Purebond plywood, consistent with the back panel. This choice ensures uniform quality and strength throughout the build. If a full sheet isn’t necessary for your project, many hardware stores offer convenient project panels that can be cut to size.

Once the notches were perfectly cut, I enhanced the shelves by attaching 1×2 trim along the front edges. This trim serves a dual purpose: it provides a clean, finished appearance, concealing the raw plywood edges, and significantly increases the rigidity and strength of each shelf. To secure the trim, I applied a bead of wood glue for a strong, lasting bond, then used my Airstrike Nailer to fasten it securely. The nailer makes quick work of this task, ensuring a tight and professional finish.

With the shelves prepared, it was time to integrate them into the main structure. I started by securely attaching the bottom shelf to the legs, ensuring it was level and square. Following that, the top shelf was added, creating the primary framework for the buffet’s interior compartments. These steps are crucial for establishing the overall dimensions and functionality of the storage areas within the buffet.

Precision Joinery: Utilizing Pocket Holes for Strength

For incredibly strong and durable joints that are also hidden, pocket holes are a woodworker’s best friend. I leveraged my trusty Kreg R3 Jig to drill precision pocket holes on the back of the shelf panels. The Kreg R3 is an outstanding choice for anyone starting their woodworking journey with pocket hole joinery. Even with more advanced tools available, I still find myself reaching for my R3 on large-scale projects like this buffet, proving its versatility and reliability. This technique allows for robust connections without visible fasteners, resulting in a clean and professional appearance.

Constructing the Drawer System: Frame and Slides

A key feature of this buffet table is its functional drawer system, providing convenient access to smaller items. The next step involved building the foundational frame that would house the drawer slides. This framework needs to be perfectly square and level to ensure smooth operation of the drawers. Once assembled, this dedicated drawer slide frame was securely attached to the top of the legs, integrating it seamlessly into the main structure of the buffet.

Moving onto the drawers themselves, I began by assembling the four individual drawer boxes. This process was incredibly straightforward, largely thanks to the power of pocket hole joinery and strong wood glue. This method, combining precise pocket holes for structural integrity with the bonding strength of glue, truly is one of the easiest and most effective ways to construct durable drawers. It simplifies the assembly process significantly while ensuring a robust final product.

Once the drawer boxes were assembled, I carefully attached the drawer slides to the newly built drawer frame within the buffet. This step requires meticulous measurement and alignment to ensure that each drawer operates smoothly and without catching. A properly installed set of drawer slides is key to the overall functionality and user experience of any cabinet with drawers.

At this stage, the front of the buffet was beginning to reveal its true potential, showcasing the framework for the drawers and the overall architectural lines of the piece.

Fitting the Drawers and Final Assembly

Accurate measurements are paramount when it comes to drawer construction. I precisely measured the width of my drawer slides and the internal dimensions of the drawer openings. These critical measurements guided the final construction of the drawer boxes, ensuring a snug yet smooth fit within their designated compartments. When assembling the drawers, a Kreg right angle clamp proved invaluable, holding pieces firmly in place while I attached them, guaranteeing square and strong corners.

With the drawer boxes complete, the next step was to attach the decorative face frames. These faces are what give the drawers their finished look and are crucial for the overall aesthetic of the buffet. I meticulously measured and cut each face to ensure a perfect fit, then secured them to the drawer boxes using a combination of wood glue and my Airstrike Nailer. This dual approach provides both a strong bond and immediate holding power.

The final, yet critical, step for the drawers involved thorough sanding. To ensure effortless operation and prevent any sticking, I carefully sanded down all the edges and surfaces of the drawers. My Ryobi Corner Cat sander, equipped with 50-grit sandpaper, was ideal for reaching corners and smoothing out any imperfections, resulting in perfectly fitting and gliding drawers.

With the drawers smoothly installed and perfectly aligned, the structural phase of the buffet table was nearing completion. The final major component to add was the robust tabletop. I securely attached the top planks, forming a substantial and attractive surface that is ready for its protective and decorative finish.

The Grand Finish: Painting and Decorating

The moment of transformation arrived with the application of paint. For this project, I chose Sherwin Williams Anonymous, a rich and sophisticated hue that perfectly complements the turned legs and the overall aesthetic of my dining room. I applied two generous coats, allowing ample drying time between each to ensure a smooth, durable, and even finish. The paint not only protects the wood but also brings out the elegant lines of the buffet, tying it beautifully into the room’s color palette.

The Final Reveal: A Transformed Dining Space

And just like that, the magnificent DIY Turned Leg Buffet Table was complete! From raw lumber to a stunning, functional piece of furniture, the journey was incredibly satisfying. This buffet now stands as a testament to craftsmanship and personalized home decor.

To truly bring the buffet to life and add a touch of personal flair, I carefully selected some beautiful decorative accents from Save On Crafts. I specifically chose their elegant Tiered Serving Tray, quaint Glass Bottles, and the uniquely attractive Dried Artichokes. The convenience of their service, with items arriving promptly in about a week, made the decorating process a breeze.
