Build Your Own Charming DIY Dog Bed: A Beginner’s Guide to Pet Furniture
Creating a dedicated space for your pet is a wonderful way to show them love and enhance your home’s decor. This DIY dog bed project combines functionality with a touch of rustic charm, perfect for any interior. Get ready to embark on a fun and easy woodworking journey!
Tools You Will Need
Having the right tools makes any DIY project smoother and more enjoyable. For this doghouse bed, you’ll need a few essential woodworking tools. If you’re new to DIY, consider these foundational pieces for your toolkit:
- Miter Saw: Essential for making precise crosscuts on your lumber. Accuracy is key for a sturdy frame.
- Drill: A versatile tool for pre-drilling holes and driving screws. An 18V cordless drill offers excellent portability and power.
- Kreg Jig: This pocket hole system is a game-changer for creating strong, concealed joints, perfect for a clean aesthetic. We recommend our favorite Kreg Jig model here for its ease of use.
- Sander: To achieve a smooth, splinter-free finish, a sander (orbital or belt) is crucial. Your pet will appreciate a comfortable, safe surface.
- Clamps: While not explicitly listed, clamps are invaluable for holding pieces securely while drilling and assembling, ensuring accuracy and safety.
Materials and Supplies
Gathering your materials beforehand ensures a seamless building process. Here’s what you’ll need for this charming doghouse bed:
- 1 – 1x8x8 Pine or Common Board: This will form the sturdy base and frame of your dog bed. Pine is an excellent choice for its affordability and workability.
- 5 – 1/2″x48″ Round Dowels: These dowels create the “tent” structure of the doghouse, giving it its unique shape. Ensure they are straight and smooth.
- 1 1/4″ Pocket Hole Screws: Specifically designed for use with your Kreg Jig, these screws provide strong, reliable connections.
- Wood Glue: A strong woodworking adhesive is vital for reinforcing your joints, ensuring the durability and longevity of your pet bed.
- Fabric: Choose a fabric that matches your home decor and is durable enough for pet use. This will be for your no-sew tent cover.
- Scrap 1×6 Board for Sign (Optional): A small piece of wood for personalizing your dog’s new home.
- Fabric Tape and Iron: For creating neat, no-sew hems on your fabric cover.
- Sticky Back Velcro: To easily attach and remove your fabric cover for washing or changing styles.
Step-by-Step Guide to Building the Doghouse Bed
Ready to get started? Follow these clear and concise steps to build a fantastic DIY dog bed for your furry friend. Remember to always prioritize safety when working with power tools.
1. Building the Frame
The foundation of your doghouse bed lies in a sturdy frame. Precision in this step will ensure a stable and aesthetically pleasing final product.
Step 1: Cut and Prepare Frame Pieces

Begin by carefully cutting all your frame pieces to their specified sizes according to the free printable plans. Accuracy here is crucial for a perfectly square and stable structure. Use your miter saw for clean, straight cuts.

Next, grab your Kreg Jig. This tool allows you to drill pocket holes at an angle, creating strong, hidden joints. Set your Kreg Jig for 3/4″ pocket holes (refer to your cut list for exact placement). Drill these holes on the designated pieces. Once drilled, apply a small amount of wood glue to the mating surfaces, then attach the left and right-side frame pieces together using 1 1/4″ pocket hole screws. Ensure they are flush and square before tightening.
- You can find our favorite Kreg Jig model here, perfect for beginners and experienced DIYers alike.
Step 2: Complete the Frame Assemblies

With the side pieces connected, it’s time to add the bottom frame piece. Apply wood glue, then attach the bottom frame piece to the side frame pieces using 3/4″ pocket hole screws. This creates one complete frame assembly. You will need to build two identical frame assemblies, as these will form the top and bottom of your doghouse bed.
2. Drilling the Dowel Holes
These holes will house the dowels that form the tent-like structure, giving your dog bed its distinctive shape. Precision is vital here for a symmetrical and well-aligned “house.”
Step 1: Mark and Drill Dowel Holes

Carefully stack your two completed frame assemblies directly on top of each other. Ensure the pocket holes are facing downwards, hidden from view. Use clamps to firmly secure the frames together – this prevents any shifting during drilling and ensures your holes align perfectly. With a 1/2″ drill bit, drill a hole at each of the four corners and precisely in the center of both side pieces. Take your time, measure twice, and drill once to ensure accurate placement for your dowels.

After drilling all the holes, it’s a good practice to smooth out any rough edges. I used my new Ryobi Rotary Tool to meticulously sand the edges and the inside of each hole. This step ensures that the dowels slide in easily and that there are no splinters to snag the fabric or harm your pet. This powerful and precise Rotary Tool is one of the four fantastic tools included in the current Ryobi tool giveaway!
3. Assembling the Dog House Structure
Now for the exciting part – bringing the doghouse shape to life by incorporating the dowels.
Step 1: Install the Dowels

Cut your dowels to the specified length from your plans. Once cut, begin sliding them into the drilled holes on one of your frame assemblies. Make sure they are seated firmly but don’t force them initially.

Next, carefully align the second frame assembly over the top ends of the dowels. Gently slide this frame down, guiding each dowel into its corresponding hole. This will create the tent-like structure of your doghouse. If you encounter resistance, a rubber mallet can be incredibly helpful. Use it gently to tap the frame down, ensuring the dowels are flush with the edges of the frame for a neat and secure fit. Avoid excessive force to prevent damage to the wood.
4. Applying the Finish
A good finish not only enhances the appearance of your DIY dog bed but also protects the wood and ensures a smooth, safe surface for your pet.
Step 1: Sand, Fill, and Stain

Once the dowels are securely attached and the structure is complete, it’s time for sanding. Using your sander, work your way through different grits (e.g., 120-grit, then 180-grit, finishing with 220-grit) to achieve a super smooth surface. Pay extra attention to all edges and corners. After sanding, fill any visible pocket holes with wood filler and allow it to dry completely, then sand smooth again. Finally, apply one even coat of your chosen stain to the entire dog bed. This will bring out the natural beauty of the pine wood and add a touch of elegance to your pet’s new home. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for drying and curing times.
- You can find the specific wood stain that I used here for a similar look.
5. Creating the DIY No-Sew Dog Bed Cover
Fear not, those who shy away from sewing machines! This no-sew method makes creating a stylish fabric cover incredibly simple, allowing you to personalize your pet’s bed with ease. If you can sew, that’s fantastic, but if not, no worries! Here’s how I created a beautiful tent cover for this pet bed without a single stitch.
Step 1: Select and Cut Your Fabric

I stumbled upon a curtain with an absolutely delightful pattern on Amazon, which proved to be the perfect choice! While it came as a pair, you’ll only need one curtain panel for this project. Carefully measure the width of your doghouse tent to ensure the fabric will cover both sides generously. Using sharp fabric scissors, cut the curtain to size. I recommend keeping the existing seam on one side and the top edge of the curtain, as this saves you a step. For the other cut edges, make sure to leave an extra inch on the width and approximately 4 inches extra on the length. This excess material will be used for hemming.
- You can find the exact curtains I purchased for the fabric here.
Step 2: Hem the Edges with Fabric Tape

To create neat, professional-looking edges without any sewing, I utilized fabric tape and my iron. Lay your fabric flat on an ironing board. Fold over the cut edges (the extra inch on the width and 4 inches on the length) to create a hem. Insert the fabric tape within the fold, and then, following the product instructions, press firmly with a hot iron. The heat activates the adhesive, creating a strong and durable hem. This method is incredibly simple and yields beautiful results. You can find fabric tape at any craft store or conveniently purchase it online, just as I did.
- Find the fabric tape I used here for your own no-sew project.
Step 3: Mark Velcro Placement

Once all your hemming is complete and the fabric has cooled, drape the fabric cover back over the doghouse tent structure. This allows you to accurately mark where the Velcro pieces will need to be attached on both ends of the fabric. The goal is to create a snug, yet easily removable, fit.
Step 4: Attach Velcro and Secure Cover

Using sticky-back Velcro, attach one part of each Velcro piece to the designated marks on both ends of your fabric. Press firmly to ensure a strong bond. The beauty of using Velcro is its versatility; it allows me the freedom to change out the tent material whenever I desire, making it easy to refresh the look or clean the fabric. Once the Velcro is securely in place, wrap the fabric snugly around the pet tent, securing it with the Velcro closures. You now have a custom, removable fabric cover for your DIY dog bed!
- You can find the reliable Velcro that I used here.
6. Adding the Finishing Touches to the DIY Dog Bed
Personalize your pet’s new retreat with these delightful additions, transforming it into a truly unique and cozy space.

To add a personal touch, I utilized a piece of scrap 1×6 wood to craft a custom sign for the dog bed using my Glowforge, a fantastic laser cutter for detailed designs. Once the sign was ready, I attached it securely to the dog bed using my reliable Ryobi Pin Nailer. This tool is perfect for delicate trim work, leaving almost invisible holes for a clean finish.
- You can find the Ryobi Pin Nailer here, a versatile tool for various small fastening tasks.

For the ultimate cozy ambiance, I couldn’t resist adding some adorable string lights to the inside of the bed. This instantly transformed the space into a warm and inviting sanctuary for my pup.

These particular string lights conveniently plug into a USB port and offer eight different settings, allowing for various moods. I specifically chose them because they feature a durable copper wire, which makes them incredibly easy to wrap securely around the dowels. More importantly, the robust wire makes them difficult for my pup to bother or chew on, ensuring both safety and longevity.
- You can find these versatile and pet-friendly string lights here.

I designed this delightful pet tent to perfectly accommodate a medium-sized memory foam dog pillow, ensuring maximum comfort for my furry friend. One of the best aspects of these plans is their flexibility: if you have a small or large dog, you can easily adjust the bed dimensions to fit any size cushion you choose. This adaptability ensures that every pet, regardless of size, can enjoy a custom-fitted bed.
- You can find the exact pet pillow that I designed this bed around here.
I genuinely believe my new pooch, GiGi, is absolutely smitten with her new DIY Dog Bed! I personally love how seamlessly it integrates with my home’s decor, adding a touch of personalized charm. And I think GiGi adores the supreme comfort it offers – or perhaps she’s just captivated by the enchanting glow of the string lights! This project truly proves that a handmade pet bed can be both beautiful and functional.
