Crafting Your Own Haunted Birdhouses: What You’ll Need
Creating these adorably eerie haunted birdhouses is a wonderfully rewarding project that requires just a few readily available materials. You’ll be surprised at how easily these items come together to form unique and festive Halloween decor. Gathering your supplies is the first exciting step on your crafting journey!
- Unfinished Wood Birdhouses: Pick up three, ideally for around $1 each, from your local craft store like Joann Crafts. Unfinished wood is perfect as it provides a blank canvas for your creative vision and ensures paint adheres beautifully. Look for varying styles and shapes to add visual interest to your final display.
- Unfinished Wood Candlesticks: You’ll need three, with a variety of heights. We suggest two 3-inch and one 6-inch candlestick to create dynamic levels. These will serve as the elegant, yet spooky, bases for your birdhouses, elevating them both literally and aesthetically.
- Medium-Sized Wood Base Circles: Four of these will provide stable foundations for your candlestick and birdhouse assemblies. Ensure they are wide enough to offer good support and balance.
- Paints: Grab a can of black spray paint for a quick and even base coat. Additionally, a bottle of black acrylic paint will be essential for distressing and adding depth to your haunted creations. Don’t forget a foam brush for smooth application.
- Adhesives: Mod Podge is your best friend for securely attaching scrapbook paper and providing a durable, sealed finish. A can of spray adhesive can also be handy for larger paper applications, ensuring full coverage and minimizing wrinkles.
- Scrapbook Paper: Choose paper with Halloween themes, colors, and prints. Think eerie patterns, subtle textures, or classic orange, black, and purple hues. This is where you can truly infuse your birdhouses with personality and frightful fun.
- Miscellaneous Halloween Accessories & Silver Glitter: This is where the magic happens! Look for miniature bats, spiders, skulls, tiny crows, or any other spooky trinkets that catch your eye. Silver glitter will add that extra touch of eerie sparkle, transforming simple items into dazzling Halloween accents.

Step-by-Step Guide to Spooky Transformation
Now that you have all your materials, let’s dive into the exciting part: bringing these haunted birdhouses to life! Follow these simple steps for a truly enchanting outcome.
1. Foundation and Assembly
Begin by assembling your foundations. Carefully glue the candlesticks onto the center of your wood base circles. Once those are secure, glue the unfinished birdhouses directly onto the tops of the candlesticks. Refer to the image for the ideal stacking order; it’s designed to be effortlessly charming and stable. This initial assembly creates the classic birdhouse-on-pedestal look that will serve as the canvas for your Halloween magic.
2. The Eerie Base Coat
With your birdhouse structures fully assembled, it’s time to give them a base coat of black spray paint. Ensure you work in a well-ventilated area, preferably outdoors or in a garage with open doors. Apply thin, even coats, allowing each layer to dry completely before applying the next. This creates a smooth, ominous foundation that will make your Halloween accents pop and provide that perfect haunted aesthetic.
3. Designing with Scrapbook Paper
This is where your birdhouses start to get their distinct personalities! Trace and cut out pieces of your chosen Halloween-themed scrapbook paper to fit the different surfaces of your birdhouses. We opted to cover the “bird” holes on most of our houses (leaving the round one exposed for variety), then carefully hole-punched around the “perch” areas where applicable. This step allows for immense creativity; mix and match patterns, or use a cohesive theme for all three.
4 & 5. Mastering Mod Podge for Secure Adhesion
Now, it’s Mod Podge time! Apply a light, even coat of Mod Podge to the back of your cut scrapbook paper pieces. Immediately after, gently place the paper onto the desired surface of your birdhouse. For extra sturdiness and to create a seamless, sealed finish, apply a thin coat of Mod Podge to the sides of the birdhouses as well, directly over the paper. This not only glues the paper firmly in place but also protects it and gives it a subtle sheen.
6. Achieving a Flawless Finish
To ensure your scrapbook paper adheres perfectly and looks professionally applied, use a squeegee or even a credit card to gently smooth out any air bubbles that might be trapped underneath the paper. Work from the center outwards to push out any excess Mod Podge or air, leaving you with a crisp, clean surface.
The Un-Accessorized Charm: Before the Bling
Take a moment to admire these bad boys in their stripped-down, un-accessorized state. Even at this stage, with their sleek black finish and decorative paper, they possess a compelling, subtly spooky charm. But we’re not quite finished yet; it’s time to add character and that signature Lolly Jane flair!

Now, let’s do something about that, shall we? We simply adore distressing everything we can get our hands on – it drives our dear mother absolutely nuts, but we can’t resist the charm of an aged, imperfect finish! It’s all part of creating that perfectly “haunted” look.
The Art of Distressing & Adding Character
To achieve that wonderfully worn and weathered haunted effect, we lightly brushed black acrylic paint here and there, all over the birdhouses. This technique helps to add depth, highlight textures, and create a slightly grungier, more authentic spooky vibe. It’s also a great opportunity to touch up any spots that might have been missed by the initial spray paint, ensuring a consistent, dark base. Crafting is serious business, and sometimes you need a little fuel to keep those creative juices flowing! As you can see, Kristi is proudly sporting one of our interchangeable felt necklaces that we created, and that monumental Diet Coke in the background isn’t just for show – a trip to Sonic is an absolute must when we’re deep in a crafting session!

The Grand Finale: Accessorizing for Maximum Haunt
After perfecting the distressed look on our birdhouses, it was time for some serious sparkle and spooky embellishment. We sprayed the tops with glue and then added a *generous* amount of silver glitter. While we might have joked about a gallon, a good bit of glitter goes a long way in adding a touch of eerie glam to your Halloween decor. To truly “bling out” these birdhouses in their Halloween best, we embarked on a budget-friendly shopping spree at our local Dollar Tree for the perfect accessories. It’s amazing what treasures you can uncover for next to nothing!
(Image: Close-up of a fully accessorized and “blinged out” haunted birdhouse, showcasing the glitter and embellishments.)
We found a fantastic brown glittered owl, which we carefully placed in the center of a paper accordion flower for a sophisticated yet spooky focal point. An ordinary orange plastic spider received a dramatic makeover with a coat of brown acrylic paint and a generous smothering in gold glitter, transforming it into a menacingly elegant creature. And, as luck would have it, we stumbled upon a cute 4-pack of crows for under $1, made even sweeter with a 40% off Michael’s coupon! We truly had everything else on hand – you thought we were kidding about our Shanty stash, didn’t you? We definitely weren’t! Hee hee! In total, we spent less than $5 on this entire project, proving that stunning DIY Halloween decor doesn’t have to be expensive. Sweet!
Showcasing Your Spooky Creations
We absolutely adore how these haunted birdhouses turned out! Their blend of rustic charm and spooky elegance makes them perfect for any Halloween display. We proudly added them to Kelli’s existing Halloween arrangement, where they instantly became captivating focal points. When displaying your own creations, consider grouping them at varying heights to create visual interest. Add ambient lighting, such as LED candles or fairy lights, to enhance their eerie glow as evening falls. Surround them with other fall foliage, miniature pumpkins, or even a few faux spiderwebs to complete the scene. These birdhouses are versatile enough to adorn a mantelpiece, a shelf, or serve as a centerpiece on a festive table.
