Laying the Foundation: Flooring for Your Cleaning Nook

The first step in any successful closet renovation is to clear out the existing clutter and prepare the space for its new purpose. After completely emptying the closet, I began by giving the entire area a much-needed refresh. A fresh coat of paint can dramatically brighten any small space, making it feel cleaner and more inviting. I opted for Sherwin-Williams’ Pure White for the walls, ceiling, and even the inside of the door. This crisp, clean white provides a perfect backdrop, reflecting light and making the closet appear larger and more open.

The original floor space in this closet was standard stained concrete, which, while durable, lacked visual appeal and was prone to showing dirt. For a cleaning supply closet, easy maintenance is paramount. I wanted a flooring solution that was not only simple to clean but also added a touch of personality and color to the space. My search led me to an amazing find on Amazon: peel-and-stick vinyl tiles. These tiles offer an incredibly easy and cost-effective way to update any floor. The installation process was surprisingly simple; I merely used a sharp pair of scissors to cut the tiles to fit the edges and corners, requiring no special tools or messy grout. This type of flooring is resilient, water-resistant, and can be quickly wiped clean, making it ideal for a utility space where spills might occur. The subtle pattern and modern grey hue I chose added just the right amount of color without overwhelming the small area, creating a practical and stylish base for my new cleaning hub.

Building Smart: Shelving Solutions for Maximum Storage

Effective shelving is the backbone of any organized closet, and for my cleaning supply hub, I needed a system that was both versatile and budget-friendly. Given the current high price of plywood, custom-built wooden shelves seemed less appealing. After some consideration, I decided to use a tall Billy bookcase from IKEA as the primary shelving unit. These bookcases are renowned for their affordability, customizable nature, and clean aesthetic, offering a far superior look and feel compared to traditional wire shelving which I personally prefer to avoid. This decision allowed me to maximize vertical storage without breaking the bank.

The process began with assembling the Billy bookcase according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Once the unit was fully constructed, I carefully maneuvered it into one corner of the cleaning closet. To ensure stability and safety, especially in a busy utility space, securing the bookcase to the wall is crucial. I anchored the unit firmly into two wall studs using robust wood screws, preventing any possibility of tipping or shifting, even when fully loaded with cleaning supplies. This step provides peace of mind and ensures the longevity of the installation.

With the Billy bookcase securely in place, the next step was to extend the shelving capabilities to the adjacent wall, creating a truly custom and integrated storage system. I added additional support boards to the wall on the other side of the bookcase. This allowed me to install two taller shelves, effectively bridging the gap and maximizing the available vertical space. This thoughtful design created an ideal tall, open section beneath these new shelves, perfect for accommodating bulkier items like vacuum cleaners, tall mops, brooms, and other long-handled tools that typically take up valuable floor space. Above this vertical storage, the new shelves provided extra surface area for more cleaning products or less frequently used items. For these additional shelf boards, I utilized laminated pine boards, cut precisely to size to ensure a snug and professional fit. These boards offer a sturdy and smooth surface that complements the aesthetic of the bookcase, maintaining a cohesive look throughout the cleaning supply closet.

Once all the shelving components were firmly in place, the finishing touches were applied to elevate the entire look and create a seamless “built-in” appearance. I added decorative trim pieces to cover the base of the bookshelf and several more to the front edges of the shelves. This simple addition instantly transformed the off-the-shelf bookcase into a custom-looking fixture, giving the entire closet a more polished and professional feel. To achieve a flawless finish, I meticulously caulked all the seams where the trim met the walls and shelves, filling any gaps for a smooth transition. Next, I used wood putty to fill all visible screw holes and imperfections. The final step was to paint all the newly installed wood, including the trim and shelves, with the same Sherwin-Williams Pure White paint. This consistent color scheme unified the entire space, creating a bright, clean, and highly functional cleaning supply closet that looks like it was designed specifically for this home.

The Secret to Tidy Storage: Cleaning Supply Baskets

Even with perfectly designed shelves, small items can quickly create clutter. The key to maintaining an organized cleaning supply closet lies in effective containment. I discovered the absolute best storage baskets to keep all my various cleaning essentials neatly tucked away. These baskets are perfect for holding spray bottles, spare rubber gloves, dusters, sponges, and an array of other smaller cleaning products that might otherwise roll around or get lost on open shelves. I sourced these fantastic baskets from The Container Store, a go-to for all organization enthusiasts. You can find them here!

What makes these baskets so ideal? First, they are incredibly inexpensive, making them an accessible solution for any budget. Second, they come in a wide variety of sizes and colors, allowing for customization to suit any aesthetic preference or specific storage need. I opted for a light gray shade, which complements the pure white interior of the closet beautifully, adding a subtle touch of modern elegance. One of their most practical features is their height; they are tall enough to prevent supplies from tipping over or spilling out, yet short enough that I can easily reach in and grab a specific item—like a bathroom cleaner or a new sponge—without having to pull the entire bin out. This accessibility is a game-changer for daily use. Furthermore, the integrated handles are a thoughtful design element, making it effortless to pull out a basket for deeper cleaning tasks or when restocking supplies. I used the medium-sized baskets for the smaller cubbies within the IKEA bookshelf and deployed the larger-sized baskets on the two taller, custom-built shelves on the left-hand side, ensuring every item has its perfect spot.

Label It Up: Easy Organization for Your Bins

No organizational system is truly complete without clear and consistent labeling. Labels are crucial for not only knowing what goes where but also for maintaining the system over time, especially when other family members are involved. They eliminate guesswork and ensure that everything is returned to its correct spot after use. I found an ingenious and incredibly simple solution for creating uniform labels for each of my cleaning supply bins. These particular labels, which I discovered on Amazon, have been a fantastic addition to my organization toolkit. You can see them HERE!

The beauty of these labels lies in their ease of use. You simply design your desired labels on your computer, customizing the text and font to your liking, and then print them right at home using your personal printer. This DIY approach offers immense flexibility, allowing you to create labels for every specific cleaning product or category you have. Forget about messy handwriting or struggling with label makers that run out of specialized tape. The process is incredibly straightforward and efficient. Another significant benefit is their removable nature. If your cleaning supplies change, or if you decide to repurpose a bin for a different category in the future, these labels peel off cleanly without leaving any sticky residue. This adaptability ensures your organization system can evolve with your needs, making it a sustainable and long-term solution for a perfectly tidy cleaning supply closet.

What to Call Your Newly Organized Space?

With the renovation complete and every cleaning supply neatly in its place, I started pondering the perfect name for this transformed space. What do you call a closet dedicated solely to cleaning supplies and tools? “Cleaning supply closet” is functional, but perhaps a bit too literal. “Utility closet” comes to mind, encompassing its practical purpose. Or, given that I’m the primary orchestrator and user of this organized haven, perhaps “Mom’s closet” would be more fitting – a humorous nod to its essential role in my daily life! Regardless of the name, I am absolutely thrilled with how this project turned out. The sense of calm and efficiency it brings to my household chores is invaluable.

The best part is that even my kids, notorious for creating chaos, have been surprisingly good about helping to keep it organized. The clear labels and designated baskets make it easy for everyone to put things back in their proper place. I particularly love the thoughtful design elements that maximize every inch. The top shelf, for instance, is perfectly sized to store my smaller handheld carpet cleaner, while other carpet cleaning tools fit snugly on the bottom. To further optimize vertical space, I utilized Command hooks on the interior walls. These are fantastic for hanging up the bag of vacuum attachments, keeping them off the shelves and easily accessible. Similarly, my broom is now neatly hung, preventing it from toppling over or cluttering the floor. This well-planned cleaning hub has not only cleared up precious space under my kitchen sink but also provided much-needed extra storage in our laundry room. It’s incredibly satisfying to rethink small spaces, initially intended for a specific use, and transform them into highly functional, efficient areas that truly serve my family’s needs and enhance our daily lives. This DIY cleaning supply closet is a testament to the power of thoughtful organization!
