Essential Materials: Building a Foundation of Quality
The core structure, or “box,” of these charming side tables utilizes hardwood plywood. For our personal build, we consciously chose to use Purebond Plywood. This remarkable product is consistently our top recommendation whenever plywood is integral to a project, and for excellent reasons. Purebond offers the sophisticated appearance and durability of expensive hardwood at a mere fraction of the cost, making it an incredibly smart and budget-friendly choice. Beyond its aesthetic and economic advantages, Purebond is proudly manufactured in the USA and, critically, is formaldehyde-free. This significant feature ensures a safer working environment and a healthier finished product for your home, free from harmful off-gassing. You can readily find Purebond Plywood at your local Home Depot. A clever tip we always employ is to have the friendly staff at Home Depot cut the larger sheets down to more manageable sizes. This not only simplifies transportation but also makes handling the wood in your workshop much easier.
Step-by-Step Construction Guide: Bringing Your Vision to Life
1. Assembling the Main Box with Pocket Holes
The foundational step in constructing these tables is to build the primary box structure. For this crucial part, we leveraged the efficiency and strength of our Kreg Jig. This incredible tool allows for the creation of robust pocket hole joints, which are perfect for quickly and securely joining pieces of wood without visible fasteners on the exterior. We drilled 3/4-inch pocket holes into the top and bottom pieces of our plywood, preparing them for a strong and seamless connection.
To ensure precise alignment, we first used a pencil to mark the exact position where the bottom board would meet one of the side pieces. Following this, we applied a generous line of Gorilla Wood Glue – a woodworking staple known for its exceptional bonding strength – along the marked edge before securely attaching the bottom piece. The combination of glue and pocket screws creates an incredibly durable joint that will withstand years of use.
For unparalleled stability during attachment, we employed our Kreg Right Angle Clamp. This fantastic tool acts like an extra set of hands, holding the bottom board perfectly in place and flush with the side piece while we drove in the 1.25-inch pocket hole screws. We truly love this clamp; it significantly simplifies the assembly process, making precise alignment a breeze!
The top board was attached using the exact same method. It’s crucial to ensure that the top piece is perfectly flush with the edges of the side pieces for a clean and professional finish. Precision here pays off visually.
And just like that, you have a sturdy and perfectly squared box – the foundational framework for your multifunctional table!
2. Installing the Optional Interior Shelf for Custom Storage
Next, we moved on to adding the interior shelf piece. This component is entirely optional and can be customized to suit your specific storage needs. Whether you need space for taller books, smaller items, or specific office supplies, you can adjust its height within the table. We utilized the same reliable 3/4-inch pocket holes and 1.25-inch pocket hole screws for this section, ensuring consistent strength and ease of assembly.
To give the shelf a polished appearance and conceal the raw edge of the plywood, we attached a piece of 1×2 trim to its front. This was done efficiently using our Ryobi AirStrike brad nailer and a bead of wood glue, providing a clean, finished look to the interior.
3. Adding the Decorative Trim for Enhanced Aesthetics
Now for the exciting part – trimming this beautiful piece! This step is quite straightforward. We used whitewood for all our trim pieces, chosen for its smooth finish and ease of manipulation. While our plans include precise cut measurements, we always recommend measuring each trim piece as you go. Even the slightest discrepancy in your main build can become apparent when adding trim, so a ‘measure as you fit’ approach guarantees a perfect result. Before fastening, we applied a thin, even line of wood glue beneath each board to ensure a strong, lasting bond.
Once glued, we secured the trim pieces with our trusty brad nailer, using 1.25-inch brad nails. The brad nailer makes quick work of this step, providing sufficient holding power while the glue dries.
For our desired aesthetic – a beautiful, weathered wood look – we deliberately chose not to fill the small nail holes. We find that the exposed nail holes contribute to the rustic charm and authenticity of the piece. However, if your design calls for a smoother, more flawless finish, you can certainly fill your nail holes. Just remember to use a stainable wood filler if you plan to stain your project, ensuring a consistent color absorption across the surface.
4. Constructing and Attaching the Face Frame
The next structural element to tackle is the face frame of the table. This frame defines the opening for the doors and adds another layer of strength and visual appeal. Again, we turned to our Kreg Jig for assembling this part, utilizing 3/4-inch pocket holes and 1.25-inch pocket hole screws for a strong and clean joinery. During assembly, our Kreg face clamp proved invaluable, holding the pieces perfectly flush while the screws were driven in, demonstrating its essential role in achieving seamless joints.
Once the entire face frame was meticulously assembled and squared, we securely attached it to the front of our main ‘box.’ This was achieved with a combination of wood glue for a permanent bond and our brad nailer for immediate hold and stability while the glue cured. This step truly gives the table its finished front profile and prepares it for the doors.
5. Crafting the Doors: The Key to Hidden Storage
Now, it’s time for the doors – truly, a parent’s best friend when it comes to concealing clutter and maintaining a tidy home! These doors are the secret behind the hidden storage, offering a discreet place for everything from remote controls to charging cables, or even snacks if it’s a nightstand. You’ll build the door frames in the same manner as the face frame, using your Kreg Jig to create sturdy pocket hole joints. Once the frames are complete, you’ll attach a piece of 1/4-inch Purebond plywood to the back of each frame. For this thinner plywood, we found that a combination of wood glue and 3/4-inch staples, applied with our AirStrike Stapler, works wonderfully. Staples provide excellent hold for thinner materials without the risk of splitting, making this step quick and efficient.
We kept the doors separate for the time being, as this allows for easier and more uniform application of stain later in the process. This also gives us unhindered access to the main table structure for subsequent steps.
6. Attaching the Angled Side Trim for a Distinctive Touch
Our final structural step involved adding the distinctive side trim pieces. These are crafted from 1×4 lumber, cut with a precise 10-degree angle. This specific cut is remarkably easy to achieve with a miter saw – simply set your saw to a 10-degree miter and cut your pieces according to the dimensions in the plans. The subtle angle adds a custom, sophisticated detail to the table’s profile. As with all our trim work, we applied a continuous line of wood glue to each piece before securing them.
Once properly aligned, we attached them using our trusty brad nailer and 1.25-inch brad nails, ensuring they were firmly in place and contributing to the overall stability and aesthetic coherence of the tables.
7. Completing the Back Panel and Planked Top
Our final construction steps involved adding the back panels to the tables and planking the top surface. For the back, we again utilized Purebond plywood, attaching it securely with our stapler but without glue. This allows for potential future access to the interior for wiring or modifications if needed. For the tabletop, we decided to give it a unique ‘planked’ appearance. While the original plan calls for specific measurements, we simply broke those down into more individual cuts, carefully arranging them to create a charming, rustic planked look. We absolutely adore the result – it adds so much character! You can see the beautiful effect here:
The Art of Finishing: Achieving a Beautiful Weathered Look
Let’s talk about the magic behind the finish! Achieving this charming weathered look involved a combination of products that have quickly become our favorites. We began by staining the entire piece with Varathane wood stain in Weathered Grey. This fantastic product, readily available at Home Depot, requires only a single coat and dries incredibly fast – often within an hour! This efficiency is a huge bonus, allowing you to move quickly to the next step without long waiting periods. The Weathered Grey provides a beautiful, muted base that truly sets the tone for a rustic yet refined aesthetic.
To enhance the distressed effect and add depth to the finish, we applied Rust-Oleum decorative glaze over the dried stain. This glaze technique is surprisingly simple yet incredibly effective. You merely brush the glaze onto the surface and then promptly wipe away any excess. Working on one section at a time is key, as the glaze tends to dry relatively quickly. This process allows the glaze to settle into the wood grain and any imperfections, subtly highlighting the texture and creating that authentic, aged appearance we adore. Like the stain, this decorative glaze can also be found at Home Depot, making it convenient to source all your finishing materials from one place.
Hardware and Final Touches: Functionality Meets Style
The perfect finishing touch for any furniture piece is the right hardware. We sourced all our pulls and hinges from Home Depot, selecting options that complemented our weathered aesthetic while offering robust functionality. Attaching them is a straightforward process; simply use your drill to secure both the pulls to the doors and the hinges to the door frames and table body – easy peasy! To ensure the hidden storage remains truly hidden and secure, we also incorporated a small magnet closure on the bottom of the inside of the table. This subtle addition ensures that the door gently catches and stays securely closed, preventing any accidental openings and keeping your concealed items safely tucked away.
