Rescuing a Relic: A Roadkill Rescue Hutch Transformation
Hello fellow DIY enthusiasts and shanty lovers! Beckie here, from the creative corners of Infarrantly Creative and Knock Off Décor. I’m a passionate DIY girl, deeply rooted in the heartland of cornfields and The Colts, always seeking beauty in the discarded and potential in the overlooked. My journey in crafting and transforming stems from a love for breathing new life into forgotten treasures, proving that one person’s trash is truly another’s masterpiece.
I’m best known for my extensive collection of knock-off projects, where I recreate high-end designer pieces on a budget, and my beloved Roadkill Rescue projects. These are my absolute favorites, involving taking curbside finds – items literally destined for the landfill – and transforming them into beautiful, functional, and often stunning pieces of home décor. Today, I’m thrilled to walk you through one such incredible transformation, showcasing how a little vision and elbow grease can turn a forgotten item into a cherished centerpiece.
The Humble Beginnings: Discovering a Discarded Hutch with Potential
This particular project began with a rather unfortunate find. I acquired this hutch from a rental property where the previous tenants had been evicted, leaving behind a significant amount of unwanted belongings. Among the clutter and cast-offs, this hutch stood out – not for its beauty, but for its sheer potential. It was literally on its way to the trash bin when I intervened, recognizing the diamond in the rough beneath layers of neglect and outdated aesthetics. Saving it from a landfill fate felt like a small victory, but the real work was just beginning.
Assessing the Damage: A Hunch’s Many Flaws
Upon closer inspection, the hutch revealed numerous imperfections. It was missing a crucial knob, a small detail that hinted at its overall neglected state. More significantly, the top section of the hutch had unsightly chunks of wood missing, making it appear severely damaged and dilapidated. But beyond the structural issues, its aesthetic was perhaps its most glaring flaw: it was undeniably ugly. The entire piece screamed “1980s” with its pervasive parquet pattern, a style that, while once popular, now felt incredibly dated and uninspiring. Nothing quite says “I want my MTV!” like a parquet finish, immediately transporting you back to 1982. My mission, if I chose to accept it, was to erase its past and propel it into the present.
Creative Solutions for Structural Imperfections: The Paint Stick Hack
My first task was to address the missing wood chunks on the hutch’s top. I needed a creative, budget-friendly solution, and true to my “use-what-I-have” philosophy, an idea sparked: paint sticks! They were readily available, inexpensive, and serendipitously, the perfect height to cover the unsightly gaps. This simple material offered an ingenious way to restore the structural integrity and smooth appearance of the damaged area without requiring complex woodworking.
I carefully cut each paint stick to the precise size needed, ensuring a snug fit. Before attachment, I meticulously sanded off any existing writing or logos from the sticks, preparing a clean canvas for paint.

Using brad nails, I securely attached the prepared paint sticks to the hutch, creating a solid, level surface. To achieve a perfectly seamless finish, I applied wood filler over the nail holes and along the edges where the sticks met the original wood. This crucial step ensured that once painted, the repair would be completely undetectable, making it impossible to tell that a “train wreck” of missing wood had ever existed beneath. The result was a smooth, unified surface, ready for its new look.
Prepping and Painting: Laying the Foundation for Transformation
With the structural repairs complete, it was time to prepare the entire hutch for painting. I gave the whole piece a light sanding with 180-grit sandpaper. This step is essential for creating a smooth surface and ensuring optimal paint adhesion. After sanding, I meticulously taped off all areas I didn’t want painted, preparing for a fresh coat of color. I chose a classic black acrylic paint in a satin finish – a sophisticated choice that provides a subtle sheen without being overly glossy, offering a modern and elegant aesthetic.
Addressing the Dated Parquet: A Modern Wallpaper Solution
Even after painting, the persistent “parquetness” of the lower cabinets continued to bother me. This deeply ingrained pattern visually dated the piece, clashing with the modern feel I aimed to achieve. I knew I needed a covering that would not only hide the parquet but also introduce a fresh, contemporary texture. Beaded wallpaper immediately came to mind as the perfect solution. Its subtle texture and clean lines would effectively mask the outdated pattern and provide a much-needed modern update to the hutch’s lower section.
I sourced some inexpensive beaded wallpaper from Menards – while I wouldn’t recommend it for walls due to its quality, it was perfectly suitable for this furniture project. Applying it, however, presented a minor challenge. After soaking the wallpaper for the recommended five seconds, I let it sit for ten minutes, during which it seemed to “resize” itself, which was a bit frustrating! Despite this, I carefully applied it to the cabinet surface, smoothing it into place to eliminate any bubbles or wrinkles. Once adhered, I caulked the sides to create a neat, finished edge, effectively hiding the wallpaper seams and blending it seamlessly with the cabinet. After approximately eight hours of drying, I painted the wallpapered sections, integrating them fully into the hutch’s new black finish.

Adding Personality: A Pop of Color and Custom Fabric Doors
As the hutch began to take shape, a concern arose: I feared it might appear as a large, monolithic black mass in the game room, lacking visual interest. To prevent it from becoming a “big, black blob,” I decided to introduce a vibrant pop of color to the top glass doors. This creative touch would break up the solid black and infuse the piece with personality and cheerfulness. I carefully removed the glass panes from the doors, making way for a softer, more inviting element.
I then selected a lively fabric from Joann Fabrics, choosing a pattern and color that would complement the black and add a playful touch suitable for a game room. After ironing the fabric to ensure it was perfectly smooth and wrinkle-free, I meticulously attached it to the door frames using my air stapler. This created custom, fabric-backed doors that added a unique focal point and a welcome burst of color, transforming the hutch from merely functional to strikingly decorative.

The Grand Reveal: Finishing Touches and a Transformed Hutch
To ensure every detail contributed to the hutch’s cohesive new look, I sprayed the original hinges with some of the black spray paint, making them blend seamlessly with the freshly painted frame. Finally, I rummaged through my stash of leftover hardware and found the perfect knobs from another project. Attaching these new knobs completed the hutch’s stunning transformation, adding both functionality and a polished finish. The journey from a neglected, discarded piece to a vibrant, personalized hutch was complete, embodying the true spirit of Roadkill Rescue.
