The Inspiration Behind Our Rustic Glam Dresser Design
One of the most captivating elements of this dresser, and certainly one of my personal favorites, is the exquisite hardware. My journey to finding these unique pieces began unexpectedly at Joanns a few months ago, where I stumbled upon a line by Dritz featuring the absolute cutest hardware! I honestly had no idea they ventured into hardware design, but I was instantly smitten. I purchased these gems with no specific project in mind, simply because I adored them so much!
The only slight challenge with this particular Dritz hardware is its elusive nature online. While it might require a bit of searching, I highly recommend checking your local Joanns stores, as you might get lucky. For those who prefer the convenience of online shopping, fear not! I’ve diligently scoured Amazon and found some fantastic substitutes that perfectly capture the rustic glam aesthetic. I’ve got your back on this one! I’ll provide direct links to these wonderful alternatives at the very bottom of this post, ensuring you can replicate this look with ease.

Step 1: Constructing the Back Face Frame
Begin your dresser build by creating the back face frame. This component provides essential structural integrity and forms the foundation for the dresser’s rear. Using robust joinery ensures a long-lasting piece of furniture. Attach the top and bottom 1×3 boards to the vertical boards. Apply a generous amount of wood glue to all mating surfaces before securing them with 1.25-inch pocket hole screws, driven through carefully pre-drilled 3/4-inch pocket holes. Ensure that all joints are square and flush before the glue sets, using clamps to hold everything firmly in place. This initial step is critical for the overall stability and squareness of your dresser.

Step 2: Building the Front Face Frame with Drawer Dividers
Next, assemble the front face frame. This frame will be largely identical to the back frame in its basic construction, but with a crucial addition: two strategically placed 1×2 boards that will serve as the horizontal drawer dividers. These dividers are essential for separating the drawers and ensuring their smooth, independent operation. Just as with the back frame, use a combination of wood glue and 1.25-inch pocket hole screws through 3/4-inch pocket holes to securely attach all horizontal boards to the vertical ones. Pay meticulous attention to spacing and alignment to ensure even drawer gaps later on. Precision here is key for both the functionality and aesthetic appeal of your dresser.

Step 3: Assembling the Dresser Sides
Now, focus on building the two identical sides of the dresser. These sides are crafted from sturdy 3/4-inch hardwood plywood, providing a solid structure for the entire unit. Before assembly, add 3/4-inch pocket holes along each vertical edge of the plywood panels. These will be used later to attach the side panels to the front and back face frames. To enhance the aesthetic appeal, attach 1×3 trim pieces to the outside edges of each plywood side using wood glue and 1.25-inch brad nails. This trim gives the dresser a more finished and robust look.
Next, install the crucial drawer slide supports on the inside of each side panel. These supports are typically 2×4 boards, ripped down to 1-inch thickness. Alternatively, you can create these supports by cutting 1.5-inch strips from 1/2-inch plywood (the same used for the drawers) and stacking them to achieve the desired thickness. Securely attach these support boards using wood glue and 1.5-inch wood screws. Proper placement of these supports is essential for the smooth operation and alignment of your drawers, so measure carefully.

Step 4: Adding Decorative Diamond Trim
This step allows for a touch of personalization and adds significant visual interest to your dresser sides. Now, it’s time to apply the decorative diamond trim. Any 3/4-inch wide lattice can be used for this purpose. However, to save on costs and achieve a perfectly customized look, I opted to create my own trim by ripping down a 1×6 board. I carefully trimmed 1/2-inch strips at a time off the board using my table saw, which not only saves money but also ensures a consistent material match. The easiest and most accurate method for cutting the precise angles and lengths for these diamond shapes is to hold each piece of trim directly in place against the dresser side and mark your cut lines with a pencil. Then, take it to your miter saw, adjust the angle to match your mark, and make the exact cut. Attach the trim securely using wood glue for a strong bond and 3/4-inch brad or pin nails for a clean finish.

Step 5: Attaching the Dresser Base
With both side panels now built and detailed, the next step is to connect them by attaching the dresser’s base. This base is also crafted from 3/4-inch hardwood plywood, cut to a precise width of 16 inches. The base provides fundamental structural stability and forms the bottom of your dresser cavity. To facilitate a strong, concealed connection, add 3/4-inch pocket holes along each side edge of the base piece. Once the pocket holes are drilled, apply wood glue to the mating surfaces and then securely attach the base to the bottom of each dresser side using 1.25-inch pocket hole screws. Ensure the base is perfectly flush and square with the side panels before tightening the screws to maintain the integrity of the overall structure.

Step 6: Integrating Face Frames into the Main Structure
Now it’s time to bring all the major components together by attaching both the front and back face frames to the assembled sides and base. This is a critical step that defines the overall shape and rigidity of your dresser. Use wood glue on all contact surfaces to create strong, lasting bonds. Then, secure the face frames by driving 1.25-inch pocket hole screws through the pre-drilled pocket holes on each side panel and also through the pocket holes on the dresser base. It’s imperative to ensure precise alignment: the top and bottom edges of the dresser sides should be perfectly flush with the top and bottom edges of the face frames. Additionally, the side edges of the face frames should align seamlessly with the small 1×3 trim pieces you added to the dresser sides in Step 3. Take your time to achieve perfect flushness and squareness, as this will impact the entire aesthetic and functionality of your finished dresser.

Step 7: Crafting the Drawers
With the main dresser carcass assembled, your focus now shifts to building the drawers – the heart of any dresser! The outer components of each drawer (the front, back, and side panels) are constructed from 1/2-inch hardwood plywood, providing a sturdy yet manageable thickness. The base of each drawer, designed to support the contents, is made from lighter 1/4-inch hardwood plywood. Begin by assembling the outer box of each drawer. Apply wood glue to all joining edges, then secure each side using 1.25-inch brad nails. Once the box is formed, attach the 1/4-inch plywood base. Apply wood glue to the bottom edges of the drawer box, then place the base and secure it with 3/4-inch staples driven through the base and into the bottom of each side panel. It’s crucial to ensure that all edges of the drawer box and base are perfectly flush, as this will directly impact how smoothly your drawers operate within the dresser frame.

Step 8: Installing Drawers and Attaching Face Plates
Once your drawer boxes are fully assembled, the next step involves installing them into the dresser frame and then attaching their decorative face plates. For a detailed visual guide on installing the drawer slides and fitting the drawers, we highly recommend referring to our accompanying video tutorial, which illustrates the process clearly. After all the drawer boxes are smoothly installed and operating on their slides, you will cut the 3/4-inch plywood pieces to size for the drawer faces. These faces are what give your dresser its finished look. To ensure perfectly even spacing between each drawer face, use small spacers such as coins or playing cards. Position these spacers between the drawer faces and the dresser frame, and between the drawer faces themselves. Once the spacing is correct, attach the drawer faces to the front of your drawer boxes using wood glue and brad nails. The temporary spacers ensure consistent gaps, crucial for a professional and polished appearance.

Step 9: Securing the Top Panel
The penultimate step in constructing the main body of your dresser is attaching the top panel. For this, we used a 1-inch thick project panel, which can be conveniently found in the board section of most hardware stores. These panels are typically made of laminated pine and are available in various sizes, offering a stable and aesthetically pleasing surface for your dresser. I used my table saw to precisely cut the project panel to the required dimensions for a perfect fit. Once cut, position the top panel squarely on the dresser. Apply wood glue generously to the top edges of the dresser sides and face frames. Then, securely attach the top using brad or finish nails, driving them through the top panel and into the supporting sides and face frames of the dresser. This step not only completes the main structure but also provides a robust and beautiful surface for display and daily use.

Step 10: Installing the Back Panel
The final step in constructing the dresser’s main framework is attaching the back panel. This component, made from 1/4-inch hardwood plywood cut to size, serves multiple important functions. It adds significant rigidity and stability to the entire dresser structure, preventing racking and ensuring its longevity. Furthermore, it encloses the back of the dresser, keeping dust and debris out of the drawers and providing a cleaner, more finished appearance. To attach the back panel, position it flush with the edges of the dresser’s rear. Apply a thin bead of wood glue around the perimeter of the back face frame for an extra strong bond. Then, use 3/4-inch staples, driven through the plywood and into the back face frame, to securely fasten it in place. Ensure staples are closely spaced for maximum hold.

The Charm of Hardware: Bringing the Glam!
Once the main construction of your dresser is complete, it’s the hardware that truly transforms it, elevating it from a simple piece of furniture to a statement of rustic glam elegance. The right hardware can completely change the character of a piece, adding personality and a touch of luxury. For this dresser, we opted for unique elements that perfectly blend rustic charm with glamorous accents.
Smooth Operation: Drawer Slides
For effortless drawer operation, choosing quality drawer slides is paramount. We selected reliable full-extension slides that allow the drawers to open completely, providing easy access to all contents. You can find the exact ones we used here: Drawer Slides We Used! These ensure that your beautiful custom drawers function as beautifully as they look.
DIY Leather Pulls: A Touch of Rustic Elegance
To infuse a unique rustic touch, we handcrafted our own leather drawer pulls. This adds a personalized, tactile element that contrasts wonderfully with the metallic glam accents. We sourced high-quality leather for this task: Find This Leather Here!
I began by cutting three identical pieces of leather, each approximately 12 inches long. Small holes were then carefully drilled into each end of the leather strips, preparing them for attachment to the drawer faces.

Next, I meticulously located the center point on each drawer face to ensure symmetrical placement. The leather strips were then attached using Kreg screws, securing one end of the leather to the drawer face. The key here is to leave just enough slack in the leather to create a comfortable and functional pull loop, allowing fingers to easily grasp and open the drawer.

Decorative Nail Heads: Concealing with Style
To beautifully conceal the Kreg screws and add another layer of glam, I used these incredibly cute decorative nail heads. They serve a dual purpose: practical and aesthetic. After the screws were in place, I carefully positioned a nail head over each screw and gently tapped it into place with a mallet. This simple addition instantly elevates the drawer pulls with a sophisticated, finished look. Click HERE to find these charming nail heads on Amazon.

Elegant Feet: The Foundation of Glam
The dresser’s feet, originally from the elusive Dritz line, are another key component of its distinctive style. While these specific Dritz feet were challenging to find, I’ve managed to discover some really charming and very similar alternatives on Amazon, ensuring you can replicate this elegant touch. These feet not only lift the dresser, giving it a lighter, more refined presence, but also add a metallic accent that complements the overall glam aesthetic.

If you’re aiming for a sleek, modern contrast, these feet offer the same elegant style with a sophisticated black finish!
For a warmer, classic glam look that perfectly mirrors the original vision, these feet boast the same style with a beautiful brass finish!
Decorative Metal Corners: The Final Touch
The ornate metal corners also hail from the Dritz line, providing a final flourish of glam and protection. Unfortunately, similar styles have proven even harder to source online. However, don’t despair! Here is the link to them on Joann’s site, which allows you to check if your local store might carry them. These corners not only protect the dresser’s edges but also add a touch of intricate detail that perfectly encapsulates the “glam” aspect of our design.

Finishing Touches: Sanding, Staining, and Sealing
Once your dresser is fully assembled and all hardware is installed, the final steps of sanding, staining (or painting), and sealing are crucial for achieving that desired rustic glam finish and ensuring the longevity of your beautiful piece. Start with thorough sanding, progressing through various grits (e.g., 80, 120, 180, 220) to achieve a super smooth surface. This will prepare the wood to absorb stain evenly or provide a perfect base for paint. After sanding, meticulously clean off all dust.
For the “rustic glam” look, consider a wood stain that highlights the natural grain, perhaps a warm tone to complement the leather pulls and brass hardware, or a darker shade for a bolder contrast. Apply your chosen stain according to the manufacturer’s instructions, wiping off excess for an even finish. If painting, apply a high-quality primer followed by your desired paint color, often a clean white, a deep charcoal, or a subtle metallic sheen can work wonders. Once your stain or paint is dry, apply several coats of a durable topcoat, such as polyurethane or a clear wax. This will protect the wood from daily wear and tear, moisture, and UV damage, while enhancing its natural beauty or painted finish. A satin or semi-gloss finish will add that touch of “glam” by reflecting light beautifully, completing the transformation of your custom dresser.
