With two more kids added to our bustling household since then, the need for a brighter, yet equally robust, flooring solution became undeniable. A Modern Update for My Son’s Room and Guest Bathroom

The latest phase of our renovation has focused on my son’s room and his adjoining bathroom, which also functions as a guest bath, along with our hallway powder bath. I cannot express how thrilled I am with the progress in these spaces! After installing a dramatic brick accent wall in his room, I sought flooring that would complement its rustic, industrial charm. My choice was a sophisticated dark grey, black slate tile for the floors. The deep, rich tones of the slate provide a stunning contrast to the texture of the brick, creating a balanced and visually captivating aesthetic. Slate is not only incredibly durable but also offers a natural slip resistance, making it an excellent choice for a child’s room and bathroom. These floors are currently laid and patiently awaiting grout, and even in this unfinished state, the impact is immense.

Given that my son’s room also doubles as a guest room when family visits, and his bathroom serves as a guest bath, I wanted to ensure the space felt bright, welcoming, and undeniably luxurious. To achieve this, I opted for the most exquisite marble tile from The Tile Shop, and I am beyond thrilled with the results taking shape. For the shower walls, I chose the classic elegance of Hampton Carrara Pillowed subway tile. The subtle pillowing effect on each tile adds a beautiful dimension and softness, reflecting light in a way that truly brightens the entire space. This choice perfectly balances the darker tones of the bedroom, creating a serene and sophisticated retreat. The timeless beauty of Carrara marble instantly elevates the bathroom, making it feel like a high-end spa.

To add an extra touch of sophistication and detail, I used Hampton Carrara Polished Barnes as a decorative border within the shower and to create an elegant chair rail effect on the bathroom walls. This polished trim piece introduces a refined finish, beautifully accentuating the edges and adding a custom, high-end feel to the entire design. I absolutely love how it “fancies up” the space and provides a subtle, luxurious demarcation. While the entire space still needs to be fully grouted, the walls painted, plumbing installed, and a new custom vanity built, the overall direction and aesthetic are incredibly promising. My son’s current lack of a sink is certainly providing all the motivation needed to get this stunning bathroom finished swiftly!

Now, let’s talk about our small hallway powder bath! This compact space, featuring a convenient pocket door, presented a unique opportunity for a high-impact design. I removed the existing vanity, creating a blank canvas for a show-stopping feature wall. My vision includes building a unique, rustic console vanity, and to create an exciting contrast with that organic, textured look, I sought a tile that would provide modern elegance. And just look at what I chose – pure love! It’s a striking harlequin marble tile, also sourced from the exceptional collection at The Tile Shop. This geometric pattern in luxurious marble brings a sophisticated, contemporary flair that will beautifully juxtapose the rustic warmth of the custom vanity. A feature wall in a small space like a powder bath is an excellent way to introduce personality and design drama without overwhelming the area. The harlequin pattern ensures visual interest and a touch of unexpected artistry, making this often-overlooked space a true design statement within our home.
