After an exhilarating yet demanding weekend filming our pilot for HGTV, the creative urge for a hands-on project was stronger than ever. It was a whirlwind of activity, incredibly fun, and we’re eagerly anticipating the air date, which we’ll share with you as soon as it’s confirmed! Amidst the excitement, I managed to carve out some precious time to create this charming and versatile piece for our master bedroom. It’s a project that perfectly blends functionality with farmhouse-inspired aesthetics, and I’m absolutely thrilled with the result.
Introducing our latest DIY marvel: a stunning piece that seamlessly transitions between a stylish coffee table and a practical bench. Its adaptability makes it an ideal addition to nearly any room, offering both design flair and utility. Believe it or not, this entire project cost an astonishingly low $25 in lumber! I had recently purchased a beautiful couch to nestle in front of our bay windows, and while I adored how perfectly it fit the space, the absence of a coffee table was driving me a little crazy. I needed a spot for my morning coffee cup or a lovely vase filled with fresh flowers. However, a traditional, full-sized coffee table would have unnecessarily cluttered the room. This ingenious dual-purpose design emerged as the perfect solution, and I am utterly in love with how it completes our space!

Building Your Own Farmhouse Coffee Table Bench: A Step-by-Step Guide
This project is a fantastic opportunity to hone your woodworking skills and create a custom piece of furniture that perfectly suits your home. Let’s dive into the building process for this affordable and stylish DIY coffee table bench.
Step 1: Making the Initial Cuts
I began by making all the primary cuts for the bench’s structure, carefully following the dimensions provided in the free plans. It’s always best practice to complete most of your cuts at the outset (excluding the feet, which often require specific angles or adjustments later). This methodical approach helps organize the building process and ensures that all components are ready for assembly.
Step 2: Marking and Cutting the Decorative Side Profile
Next, I moved on to creating the distinctive profile for the bench’s side pieces. Taking one of the pre-cut side pieces, I carefully marked the specific areas to be cut out, forming the elegant curves and angles that give this piece its unique character. Precise marking is crucial here to achieve a balanced and symmetrical design.
My marks, precisely measured and ready for the next step, ensuring that the final aesthetic is perfect.
With the lines clearly marked, I confidently used my jigsaw to meticulously cut along them. A jigsaw is an excellent tool for these types of intricate curves and interior cuts, allowing for precision and control. Take your time, letting the tool do the work, to achieve clean and smooth edges.
Step 3: Sanding and Duplicating the Side Pieces
After successfully cutting the first side piece, I immediately used my corner cat sander to smooth out any rough edges and ensure a flawless finish. Sanding at this stage is crucial, not only for aesthetics but also for safety, preventing splinters and preparing the wood for staining and painting.
To ensure perfect symmetry, I used the freshly cut and sanded first side piece as a template. By tracing its exact shape onto the second piece of lumber, I guarantee that both sides of the bench will be identical. This simple trick saves time and ensures a professional, harmonious look for your DIY furniture project.
And just like that, you have two perfectly matched side pieces, ready for the next stage of assembly. Easy and effective!
Step 4: Drilling Pocket Holes for Strong Joints
For strong and invisible joinery, pocket holes are a DIY woodworker’s best friend. I carefully drilled pocket holes into one end of both side pieces. These angled holes allow screws to create a robust connection without visible fasteners on the exterior of the bench, contributing to its clean, finished look. This is a fundamental step for creating durable, lasting furniture.
Your side pieces should now clearly show the drilled pocket holes, ready for assembly. It’s also at this point that you’ll prepare your 2×4 lumber pieces by drilling corresponding pocket holes, ensuring all connecting parts are ready for seamless attachment.
Step 5: Assembling the Base Structure
Now, let’s bring the structure together! I attached the 2×4 lumber pieces, which form the apron of the bench, to one of the side pieces. This connection was made using pocket hole screws for robust strength, reinforced with a liberal application of wood glue for an even stronger, more permanent bond. Wood glue creates a joint that is often stronger than the wood itself, making it an essential part of durable furniture construction.
With the first side securely in place, repeat the process to attach the other side piece to complete the main frame of your bench. Ensure everything is square and flush before tightening all the screws. This forms the sturdy base for your versatile DIY coffee table bench.
Step 6: Attaching the Top and Stretcher
With the base structure firmly assembled, it’s time to add the expansive top surface of the bench. I attached the top piece to the base, again utilizing pocket hole screws and a generous application of wood glue. This ensures a stable and long-lasting surface, perfect for holding your coffee, books, or serving as extra seating.
To further enhance the structural integrity and prevent any wobbling, the stretcher piece is installed next. This crucial component ties the side pieces together, providing additional support and stability to the entire bench. Secure it firmly with pocket hole screws and wood glue, creating a robust framework.
Step 7: Adding the Angled Feet
The feet add a touch of elegance and complete the silhouette of this farmhouse-inspired piece. I used my miter saw, set at a precise 45-degree angle, to create the distinctive cuts on each foot. Once cut, these feet were attached to the bench using a combination of brad nails for immediate hold and wood glue for a strong, lasting bond. This method ensures a clean finish with minimal visible fasteners.
With all the structural components meticulously assembled, your DIY bench coffee table is now complete and perfectly ready for the exciting transformation that the finishing touches will bring!
Transforming Your Bench: The Distressed Finish Technique
This unique finishing technique creates a beautifully aged, farmhouse aesthetic that truly sets this piece apart. It’s surprisingly simple to achieve and adds immense character to your handmade furniture.
Step 8: Applying the Base Stain
I started the finishing process by applying a single coat of Varathane Dark Walnut stain. This rich, deep hue provides a fantastic base layer that will subtly peek through the subsequent paint for that desirable distressed look. To apply, simply wipe the stain onto the wood with a clean cloth. Allow it to penetrate for about 5 minutes, then use a separate clean cloth to wipe down and blend the stain, ensuring an even and professional finish. This step is crucial for achieving depth in your final distressed look.
Step 9: The Chalk Paint Layer
Once the dark stain was completely dry to the touch, I brushed on one coat of Rust-Oleum Chalked paint in the color Linen White. Don’t be alarmed if it doesn’t look perfectly opaque or beautiful at this stage; you’ll likely see some of the underlying stain showing through, and that’s exactly what we want! This initial paint layer is merely a foundation for the distressing technique, so imperfect coverage is absolutely fine.
Step 10: Distressing for a Farmhouse Feel
After the chalk paint had thoroughly dried, it was time to reveal the beautiful distressed effect. I took a piece of 80-grit sandpaper and gently rubbed it all over the painted surfaces. Focus on areas that would naturally show wear, like edges, corners, and raised details, to create an authentic, aged appearance. I found that sanding with the grain of the wood yielded the most natural-looking results. This step is incredibly satisfying as it brings out the character and depth from the layers of stain and paint.
Step 11: Sealing with Polyurethane
Once I was happy with the level of distressing, I wiped down the entire bench with a damp cloth to remove any sanding dust. This is an important step to ensure a smooth, clean surface for the top coat. Finally, I applied one coat of Varathane Triple Thick Polyurethane all over. This protective layer seals the finish, enhances durability, and protects your beautiful work from daily wear and tear, ensuring your DIY coffee table bench remains a cherished piece for years to come.
The Finished Masterpiece!
And just like that, the transformation was complete! From a few pieces of lumber to a stunning, functional piece of furniture. It’s truly incredible what you can achieve with a little vision, some basic tools, and a weekend of dedicated effort.
This has been such an easy, inexpensive, and incredibly rewarding project. I am absolutely head-over-heels for this distressed finish technique! It adds so much character and a cozy, lived-in feel to any piece of furniture. In fact, I’ve got a serious itch to apply this finish to almost every piece of furniture in my house… oops! The versatility of this coffee table bench, coupled with its charming farmhouse aesthetic and budget-friendly cost, makes it an ideal addition for anyone looking to enhance their home decor with a personal touch. This DIY project is not just about building furniture; it’s about crafting a piece that tells a story and fits perfectly into your lifestyle.
