Home Office Desk Tower Video Tutorial

There’s nothing quite like the satisfaction of a freshly organized and beautifully designed workspace, and our new office setup truly brings that joy! The desk towers, when combined with the computer desk, create a cohesive and incredibly charming ensemble. What makes this DIY home office desk system truly exceptional is its inherent modularity. Each component – the main desk and the individual towers – is constructed separately. This thoughtful design allows for unparalleled flexibility, enabling you to configure the system to perfectly complement the unique dimensions and requirements of your specific space.

Whether you’re working with a compact room or have ample area to fill, this modular approach offers a solution. For instance, in a smaller space, you might opt to build just the desk paired with a single tower, or even the desk on its own. The beauty of this adaptability means you’re not confined to a rigid setup; you can even position the desk independently from the towers, perhaps against a different wall or as a freestanding unit. This customizable nature ensures that your new home office isn’t just functional, but also a seamless extension of your home’s aesthetic and practical needs.

Shelf Help: Revolutionizing Plywood Projects

Building with plywood can be incredibly rewarding, but the initial steps of measuring and cutting can often be a hurdle for many DIY enthusiasts. That’s why we were so excited when our partners at Purebond Plywood introduced us to Ana White’s innovative new platform, Shelf Help! They challenged us to incorporate this service into our home office desk tower project, and the results were nothing short of impressive.

Shelf Help essentially streamlines the entire process of sourcing and preparing plywood for your projects. You simply use their intuitive and free online configurator to design your perfect piece, specifying dimensions and desired features. Once your design is complete, Shelf Help takes care of the rest: they precisely cut the Purebond plywood to your exact specifications, apply edge banding if you choose, and ship it directly to your doorstep. This service eliminates the frustrating wait times often associated with getting plywood cut at local hardware stores, ensures every cut is perfectly straight and accurate, and significantly reduces the need for specialized tools like panel saws or table saws. For us, it was a massive time-saver on this project, allowing us to focus more on assembly and finishing. We highly recommend checking out their site HERE to experience the efficiency for yourself!

Constructing the Bookcase Base

The foundation of these robust home office desk towers begins with constructing the main body of the bookcase. This crucial first step ensures a sturdy and level base for the entire unit. We opted for high-quality 3/4” thick Purebond Plywood for its exceptional durability and smooth finish. To achieve a professional and polished appearance, the front edges of each plywood piece were meticulously edge banded. While this step is optional, it significantly enhances the aesthetic appeal, concealing the raw plywood edges and giving the towers a refined, furniture-grade look.

For assembly, 3/4” pocket holes are strategically drilled into each of the six shelf boards. Additionally, 3/4” pocket holes are added to the inside bottom of both side pieces. We leveraged our powerful and efficient Kreg Jig 720PRO for creating these precise pocket holes. This tool is a game-changer for joinery, allowing for strong, hidden connections that are both simple to create and incredibly secure. The Kreg Jig 720PRO offers enhanced clamping mechanisms and improved dust collection compared to older models like the Kreg Jig K4, making the building process smoother and more enjoyable. You can find this essential woodworking tool HERE on Amazon to elevate your DIY projects.

Assembling the Bookcase Shelves

Before permanently attaching the shelf boards, a crucial preliminary step is to install the drawer slides. These slides need to be precisely positioned 25 inches from the base on both of the long side pieces of the bookcase. Installing them at this stage is a significant time-saver and makes the process far less cumbersome compared to trying to attach them after the entire shelf unit has been assembled. This forward-thinking approach ensures optimal access and accuracy, laying the groundwork for smoothly operating drawers.

Next, before securing the main shelves, attach the base trim piece through the pre-drilled pocket holes on the long side boards. This foundational trim piece provides stability and a finished look to the bottom of your tower. Once these preliminary steps are complete, you can begin attaching the shelf boards. Utilize a strong wood glue for a durable bond, coupled with 1.25-inch pocket hole screws to firmly secure each shelf. A practical approach is to attach all shelves to one side piece first. We found it most efficient to start with the lowest shelf and progressively work our way upwards, ensuring each shelf is level and square.

With all shelf pieces securely attached to one side, carefully flip the entire assembly over and lay it onto the other long side. Now, proceed to attach the remaining shelf ends to this second side piece. To maintain a clean, professional finish, position the pocket holes on the top shelf board so they face upwards; this way, they will be cleverly concealed once the desk tower is fully completed. Similarly, ensure that all pocket holes on the longer side boards are oriented towards the inside of the bookcase, guaranteeing they will also be hidden from view. This attention to detail in pocket hole placement is key to achieving a seamless, high-quality look for your DIY home office furniture.

Adding Decorative Trim to Your Bookcase

With the main structure of the bookcase now firmly in place, it’s time to enhance its aesthetic appeal and provide a truly finished look by adding decorative trim. The outer trim pieces are crafted from 1×3 boards, which offer a substantial and classic frame to the unit. The remainder of the trim is then meticulously attached using a combination of strong wood glue for lasting adhesion and 1.25-inch brad nails, driven through the trim pieces directly into the plywood structure. For this task, our preferred tool is the Ryobi 18g cordless brad nailer.

This cordless brad nailer is an absolute favorite in our workshop, and for good reason. Its ease of use is unparalleled, eliminating the hassle of tangled cords or the need for an air compressor, which often limits mobility and workspace flexibility. The freedom of cordless operation allows for quick and efficient work on various parts of the project without interruption. Furthermore, the precision and power of the Ryobi brad nailer ensure that each nail is driven cleanly and securely, leaving minimal impact on the visible surfaces, which is crucial for achieving a high-quality finish on your DIY home office furniture. You can find this indispensable tool to simplify your own building projects HERE.

Building the Functional Drawer

With the bookcase frame and trim completed, it’s the perfect moment to transition to building the drawer, which will add invaluable storage to your home office desk towers. You can now set the bookcase upright, giving you a better perspective and easier access for drawer installation later on. The drawer frame itself is meticulously constructed from 1/2-inch plywood. This plywood is precisely ripped into 4-inch wide pieces, ensuring consistent dimensions for a stable and well-fitting drawer.

Cut the four pieces of plywood to their specified sizes, forming the perimeter of your drawer. Assemble the frame using a reliable wood glue for robust adhesion, reinforced by 1.25-inch brad nails driven through the corners of the longer boards and into the ends of the shorter boards. During this assembly, it is absolutely critical to ensure that all sides, tops, and bottoms are perfectly flush. This attention to detail will prevent any misalignment that could lead to a binding or poorly operating drawer later on, making your DIY home office system truly functional and frustration-free.

For the base of the drawer, a piece of 1/4-inch plywood is used. This thinner plywood offers sufficient strength for the drawer bottom while keeping the overall weight manageable. Carefully cut this piece to the exact dimensions required to fit snugly within the assembled drawer frame. Once cut, attach the base to the frame using a combination of wood glue and 1.25-inch brad nails or staples. When working with thinner plywood like 1/4-inch, staples often prove to be a superior fastening option. Staples create a broader contact area than nails, which helps prevent the thin plywood from splitting and ensures a more secure attachment, providing added durability to your DIY desk drawers.

Crafting the Drawer Face for a Polished Look

The drawer face is more than just a functional component; it’s a key element in the aesthetic appeal of your DIY home office desk towers. This decorative front is constructed using a 1/4-inch plywood panel, which serves as the main surface. To add dimension and a custom touch, 1.5-inch wide craft boards are applied to this panel. While we used 1/2-inch thick craft boards, the beauty of DIY allows for flexibility – you can choose any thickness that best complements your desired look.

Begin by cutting the longer trim pieces for the drawer face. Once cut, attach them securely to the plywood face using wood glue and 5/8-inch brad nails. The wood glue provides a strong, permanent bond, while the brad nails hold the pieces in place while the glue dries. Next, cut and attach the shorter trim pieces in the same manner, ensuring all corners are flush and tight for a clean, professional finish. Once all the trim is attached and the glue has set, the completed drawer face can then be attached to the drawer box itself. For the best possible alignment and seamless integration, we highly recommend attaching the drawer slides and installing the drawer box into the bookcase first. This allows you to then carefully position and attach the drawer face, ensuring perfect gaps and an overall polished appearance that truly elevates your custom workspace.

Fabricating the Cabinet Door

Next on the agenda is constructing the cabinet door, another key storage component of your DIY home office desk system. The door frame is built using sturdy 1×3 boards. To create strong, invisible joints, add 3/4-inch pocket holes to both ends of the two shorter boards. These pocket holes will allow for discreet and durable connections. Once the pocket holes are drilled, attach these shorter boards to the longer boards using wood glue for added strength and 1.25-inch pocket hole screws, ensuring a perfectly square and rigid frame.

While we provide general measurements for the door in the free plans, it is always best practice to measure your specific cabinet opening before making any cuts. Slight variations in your bookcase build can occur, and taking precise measurements directly from your unit will guarantee the best possible fit for your cabinet door, preventing gaps or binding. Once the frame is assembled, the face of the door is made from 1/4-inch plywood. Cut this plywood piece to size and attach it to the back of the door frame using wood glue and 5/8-inch brad nails or staples. Staples are often preferred here for their broader holding power on thinner materials. At this stage, you have the option to attach the door to the cabinet using hinges, or you can proceed with applying your chosen finish first, which often makes for easier painting or staining.

Personalizing with Glowforge: Custom Door and Drawer Faces

To truly elevate the aesthetic of these DIY home office desk towers and add a unique, personalized touch, I utilized my Glowforge Pro laser printer to create intricate designs on both the cabinet door and drawer faces. The material of choice for these custom elements was 1/4-inch Purebond plywood, which is exceptionally well-suited for laser engraving due to its consistent quality and beautiful grain. The Glowforge machine consistently produces stunningly precise engravings, bringing even the most detailed designs to life with remarkable clarity.

Each plywood piece for the door and drawer faces was run through the Glowforge machine individually to ensure optimal focus and engraving depth. Following the engraving process, each piece received a protective and enhancing coat of stain. My preferred blend for this project was Varathane Golden Oak, subtly mixed with a touch of Varathane Willow Gray. This custom stain combination resulted in a sophisticated, muted finish that beautifully highlighted the engraved details, adding immense character and charm to the towers. The intricate details on these doors are truly a favorite aspect of the entire project, demonstrating how advanced tools can bring a unique level of craftsmanship to DIY furniture. Securing the Bookcase Back Panel

The final structural step before moving on to the exciting process of applying your chosen finish is the attachment of the back panel of the bookcase. This seemingly simple step is crucial for several reasons: it adds significant rigidity and stability to the entire unit, preventing racking and ensuring the towers remain square over time. Furthermore, the back panel provides a clean, finished look, concealing the wall behind and preventing items from falling out the back of the shelves. We used a piece of 1/4-inch plywood for this purpose, offering adequate strength without adding excessive weight.

To attach the back panel, apply wood glue along all edges where the plywood will meet the shelves and the main frame. Then, secure it in place using staples driven through the back of the plywood and into the shelf pieces and the 1×3 frames. A valuable tip for ensuring accurate placement of your staples is to mark the exact locations of the shelves on the back of the 1×3 frames prior to attachment. This simple step provides clear guidance on where to place your staples, ensuring each one hits the underlying wood structure for a secure and long-lasting connection, thereby solidifying the integrity of your custom home office furniture.

Finishing Touches: Painting Your Desk Towers

With the construction of your DIY home office desk towers complete, it’s time to apply the finishing touches that will bring your vision to life. The choice of paint can dramatically transform the appearance of any furniture piece, and for these towers, I opted for my absolute favorite: Pure White by Sherwin-Williams. This shade offers a crisp, clean, and timeless look that brightens any space and provides a versatile backdrop for varying decor styles. The exact hue of white can significantly impact a room’s ambiance, and Pure White strikes a perfect balance, avoiding overly stark or creamy undertones.

I meticulously applied two coats of this beautiful paint, ensuring complete coverage and a durable finish. For longevity and ease of cleaning, I chose a satin finish. Satin paint provides a subtle sheen that reflects light gently, adding a touch of elegance without being too glossy. It’s also highly durable and easier to wipe clean than flat or matte finishes, making it an ideal choice for frequently used furniture like office desks and towers. This step, while seemingly simple, requires patience and careful application to achieve a smooth, professional-looking result that truly elevates your custom workspace and home office furniture.

Selecting and Installing Cabinet Hardware

The final details, such as cabinet hardware, play a pivotal role in completing the look of your DIY home office desk towers, adding both functionality and style. The right hardware can transform a functional piece into a statement of design. For my desk towers, I discovered the perfect drawer pulls on Amazon, which beautifully complement the overall aesthetic. These pulls offer a comfortable grip and a sleek profile, contributing to the modern yet inviting feel of the workspace. You can explore and purchase these specific drawer pulls HERE.

In addition to the drawer pulls, I also found the ideal metal door hinges on Amazon here. These hinges are not only incredibly affordable but also possess a charm that perfectly aligns with the desk towers’ design. Their smooth operation ensures that the cabinet door opens and closes effortlessly, adding to the daily convenience of your home office. The fact that they come with free shipping is an added bonus, making them an even more attractive choice for budget-conscious DIYers. These pieces of hardware are more than just functional components; they are design accents that contribute significantly to the finished elegance and practicality of your custom home office furniture, tying together all the elements of your modular desk system with a cohesive and stylish flair.
