Hello, wonderful readers!
I am absolutely thrilled to be back and sharing some incredibly exciting news with all of you. Life certainly has a way of throwing wonderful surprises our way, and I recently experienced one of the biggest and most beautiful. Just three weeks ago, our family welcomed a brand new, tiny member into our lives. He arrived much earlier than anticipated – his official due date was actually this coming Thursday, the 10th! But, as many parents know, babies often have their own unique timetable. Our little guy decided he was ready to meet the world on his own terms, making a grand entrance and keeping us delightfully on our toes. It’s been a whirlwind of joy, sleepless nights, and endless cuddles, and I wouldn’t trade a single moment of it. For those of you who haven’t had the pleasure of meeting him yet, allow me to introduce the newest addition to our family…
Welcome to the World, Brooks!
He is absolutely wonderful, healthy, and a true blessing, and my heart is overflowing with gratitude for him. Every day with Brooks is an adventure, and we’re all completely smitten. This unexpected early arrival also meant a slight shift in our plans, particularly when it came to his nursery. But as you’ll see, sometimes the best things come from adapting and embracing new directions!
Crafting Brooks’ Nursery: From Initial Dreams to Practical Solutions
A few months ago, I excitedly shared my initial vision and plans for Brooks’ nursery. I had discovered some beautiful fabric and had every intention of handcrafting his bedding, dreaming of a personalized, unique space. However, life, as it often does, had other plans for me. About eight weeks before Brooks’ arrival, I was placed on bed rest. This unexpected turn meant that my grand plans for sewing custom bedding had to be put on hold, and I found myself needing to pivot and find an alternative solution that was both beautiful and achievable.
Aviation-Inspired Nursery: Finding the Perfect Bedding
With my husband being a recreational pilot, the idea of an aviation-themed nursery had always resonated with us. It felt personal, adventurous, and perfectly suited for our little boy. While on the hunt for ready-made bedding that could align with this theme, I stumbled upon Pottery Barn Kids’ Madras Bedding. It was love at first sight! The charming plaid patterns, the classic color palette of reds, browns, and blues, and the subtle, wholesome vibe immediately captured my imagination. It felt incredibly fitting for a little boy’s room, evoking a sense of timeless adventure and comfort. I knew instantly that this was the direction I wanted to take for Brooks’ nursery, especially considering the circumstances that prevented me from creating custom pieces.
DIY Nursery Art on a Budget: Repurposing Bedding Sheets
Once the bedding was decided, my creative wheels started turning again. While resting, I began to think about adding personal touches to the nursery that would complement the Madras theme without breaking the bank. I wanted unique wall art, something that would tie into the aviation theme beautifully. I recently came across some absolutely captivating watercolor airplane prints on Etsy. They were truly stunning, with a whimsical, artistic flair that I adored. However, as delightful as they were, their price tag of around $20 per print didn’t quite align with my “shanty” budget – the reality of decorating on a budget while preparing for a new baby. That’s when inspiration struck: why not use the very sheets from the new Madras bedding to recreate a similar look? The bedding already featured charming little airplanes, making it the perfect, budget-friendly canvas for custom artwork.
The Foundation: Up-Close with the Madras Bedding Sheets
Here’s a closer look at the adorable sheets from the bedding set that sparked this DIY project. The intricate details of the airplanes were just what I needed.
I absolutely loved the charming airplane illustrations scattered across these sheets. My next step was to carefully photograph these delightful motifs. To transform them from simple fabric patterns into gallery-worthy prints, I employed a bit of digital magic. Using Photoshop Elements, I adjusted the tone and saturation of the pictures. This subtle editing ensured that the final images wouldn’t look like they were simply cut from bedding but rather appear as unique, standalone pieces of art, ready for framing. The goal was to give them a softened, almost watercolor-like effect, mimicking the expensive Etsy prints that first caught my eye.
Affordable Framing: Bringing the Art to Life
To complete the look, I needed frames that would complement the prints without overshadowing them or adding significant cost. I found the perfect solution at my trusty local Walmart, where I picked up eight inexpensive frames. Sometimes, the simplest and most affordable options are exactly what you need to bring a vision to life. These frames were plain, versatile, and exactly what was needed to elevate my DIY airplane prints into cohesive wall art.
The assembly was straightforward and immensely satisfying. After carefully printing out the edited airplane images, I simply placed each one into a frame. The final step was to arrange and hang them strategically on the wall, creating a beautiful gallery above the storage system I built previously. This DIY approach not only saved a significant amount of money but also allowed me to create truly unique and personalized artwork that perfectly captured the spirit of an aviation-themed nursery.
The Final Reveal: A Personalized Aviation Nursery Gallery
And now, for the exciting part – the results! I couldn’t be happier with how this simple yet impactful project turned out. The framed airplane prints add a delightful touch to Brooks’ nursery, transforming the space with a sense of adventure and charm. They perfectly complement the Madras bedding and the overall aviation theme, creating a cohesive and inviting atmosphere that feels both personal and polished. It just goes to show that creativity and resourcefulness can lead to stunning decor, even on the tightest of budgets.
Affordable Decorating: A $24 Nursery Art Project
This entire project, from photographing the sheets to framing and hanging, cost an astonishingly low $24! It’s truly rewarding to create something so meaningful and aesthetically pleasing for such a minimal investment. This project stands as a testament to the power of DIY and budget-friendly decorating. It’s not about spending a fortune, but about using creativity and smart solutions to craft a space that feels right. I’m incredibly proud of how these framed prints elevate the room, making it feel complete and ready for our little aviator.
With the wall art now beautifully in place, the nursery is truly taking shape. I’m eagerly looking forward to finally getting the crib out of its box and assembling it to see the entire room come together in its final form. Each element, from the carefully chosen bedding to these personalized art pieces, contributes to the warm and inviting atmosphere we envisioned for Brooks. I also have some fun curtains to share with you all very soon, which will add another layer of charm and functionality to the space. Stay tuned for more nursery updates as we put the finishing touches on this special room!

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to feed the family – it’s Paula Deen Taco Soup night at my house, and everyone is ready to dig in! Whoooop! There’s nothing quite like a comforting meal after a busy day, especially with a new baby in the house!
